What to say. I used to love this store. There was always something hip in a decent price range and I bought probably ten pairs of natives from them as my kids grew up.
A couple months ago my daughter, one of the beneficiaries of this store, had to pee. She is THREE. the owner refused to let her use the potty. He has claimed he is a parent to me years back, so how could he be such a dickus?
Truthfully I don’t now how to rate it. The cloths have gotten nicer, but less affordable. He’s really catering to the new money in Berkeley, which is okay. But not letting my daughter pee there has left me vexed. I get emotional when I’m in down there and have to see him and his little dog. It was just so lame.
I actually have a credit there and cannot redeem it bc I have to go inside the store. Bummer since the summer.

I recently visited this store with zero expectations upon entering. My boyfriend was looking for some jeans and wanted to stop here. So let’s start with the positive things I encountered during my visit:
First, I really liked the style of clothes they sold for both men and women. From clothing to accessories, I was very interested in what their clothing racks and merch tables consisted of. I especially eye a very unique «GSW» shirt by Oaklandish.
Two, everything was very neatly organized. It was very easy for my boyfriend and I to maneuver through racks and stacks for our sizes.
Three, I liked the simplicity of the store. There were minor decorations and a lot of open space for being such a small space, making it very easy on the eyes.
Now, for the negative things I found that overpowered the positive.
So, while browsing, I felt almost attacked rather than welcomed by the one-​man staff. As I was going through the racks and gently shuffling through the stacks of clothing on shelves, I could feel that I was being watched, although the sales associate/​manager/​owner was busy helping three parties of 2 in the open «fitting room area.» Much to my surprise, every time I glanced over, there he was-​looking at me. It took several times (lets say 3 – 4) until that same man (SA/​manager/​owner) to shout over to me, «DO YOU NEED HELP WITH ANYTHING?!» Mind you, the fitting room area is an open section in the back of the very small store, the music was not loud whatsoever, and the only two people who were on the floor besides the fitting room area was my boyfriend and I. I did not appreciate his approach whatsoever…
Second, when my boyfriend finally came to the jeans table (what we originally came there for LOL), the man approached us again. He looked at me, then looked at my boyfriend. «Do you know what you’re looking for?», he asks. I guess I understood the connotation in his question, but he could have worded it in a more sincere tone/​word choice. That’s what customer service is about– not the artificial smiles and attitudes, but the idea of helping someone in need.
Third, while my boyfriend patiently shuffled through the stacks of pants on the table looking for his size, the man asked my boyfriend if he knew his size. Being the polite person he is, my boyfriend declined his «help»… But like I said, my boyfriend was patiently shuffling through the jeans for his size and as he moved them, the man would move each pair back to where they were with a tinge of annoyance in his facial expression. I understand you want the store to look polished and presentable, but it’s going to get messed up… Don’t worry sir, you’ll find the extra 2 – 3 minutes between guest entrances for you to fix your overly priced jean table.
Lastly, their dog that they let walk around in the store, STINKS. He STINKS.

This review is for the shoe store, which I could not locate on Unilocal,but I know they are affiliated.
Really like the selection of practical, comfortable shoes. They turn over their inventory and selection pretty nicely, too.
My only (major) gripe is that their return policy is so limited. You have a couple weeks for EXCHANGE or STORE CREDIT only. This policy is what limits my shopping at this particular shoe boutique.

This is great, home grown local business. Convert will help you find a cute tshirt, a curated look, or perfect denim. The staff is amazing, they will hang in there with you until you find your right fit. They have cute, fashion forward looks that will keep you in your comfort zone or help you push a little bit outside of it without breaking the budget. You will leave the store looking great!

I love both of the convert stores. The one in San Francisco and the one on 4^th street. The sales help is great and so is the dog!

My eyes have been on their red/​burgundy New Balance for a few days now. I recently went in to pick em up and found that they only had it in a size 5 (waaaHHH!!!), my heart sunk and I guess they can’t order anymore. S’all good though, the sales rep showed me another pair that I always glanced over but never noticed. Ya… Let me get that in a 8.5.

Some of my best and essential clothing items come from Convert … and, for the one negative reviewer, this place is nothing like Urban Outfitters. All of the staff are super helpful and professional. I especially love that most of the clothing is made in the U.S.
And, the shoe store compliments the clothing store beautifully. My husband purchased his first Tom’s at the shoe store, as well as, Wolverines and Sperry Goldcup topsiders … he has become a loyal follower of Convert … clothing and shoes.
If you are searching for well made clothing and shoes, you will love Convert. And, if you enjoy supporting well run local businesses, you need to check out Convert where you will discover essential wardrobe pieces that last and last!

Wow some of these reviews are blasting such a wonderful small business!!! Their shoes are so cute; some very edgy, some powerful, and then there’s basics that you’ll definitely want to add/​keep for your wardrobe! You must check out Melissa shoes too! They even have Jeffrey Campbell shoes that are MADE ONLY FOR CONVERT! Don’t even get me started on the comfort of their Palladiums and Timberlands on both the men’s and women’s section!
I noticed a comment about them being racist and that COULDN’T BE FURTHER THAN THE TRUTH!!! They have had soooo many black people, Asian people, Mexican workers that have been working everytime I go into either one of their shops, and a lot of their customers are of a different race from what I see when I shop here! so it’s not cool to demean them and create a lie just because u are of a certain race and things didn’t work out smoothly that day…
So I know they aren’t racist and honestly maybe u can find some products at other places for the same price but YOU WONT find their selection, which is really one of the best that I’ve seen and I am always being impressed by their clothes!
They have high quality for sure! BUT are very affordable!
I’ve transformed my wardrobe from obvious house brand Marshalls/​GAP clothes to Converts excellent jeans, jackets; you name it they’ll have it! I love shopping here with my dog too which is such a positive bonus/​experience!
They carry raw denim which is really cool and makes me look like a bad ass!
Big Star denim is also great and they have solid accessories and amazing customer service! You will be so happy with your purchases from Convert!
I recently had a fun time/​/​opportunity having the owners shop with me and I LOVED their advice on narrowing down my so many options! Cool guys for sure and pretty funny with a good sense of humor (their staff too)
I’m positive they don’t keep people’s credit card info also, so I’d like that to be squashed; they might ask to keep your name so you can know what sizes you’ve boughten in the past or want to know anything about your purchase history! I had to ask them if they were going to save my debit card info after reading it on a Unilocal review and I can positively say that they won’t keep your entire information at all and wouldn’t be able to access my bank with what they keep on file which is just what type of card you used (visa, Amex, etc)
I feel that every time I go in and shop that the sales people have been so genuine and I love shopping with my dog in their family owned/​happy/​cool/​current business!

DO NOT SHOP HERE!!! Have shopped here in the past. This place is just mediocre. Place smells like dog but that shouldn’t be surprising.
Most items found in their shops, you can find in Urban Outfitters for a LOT less. Literally it’s the same items!!! The manager woman smokes a lot + a dog= a lot smells. The smell gets in your clothes.
I used my debit/​credit card and their system keeps your card number on their file. Use Cash! Agressive sales people.
Definitely not a place for minorities. I was told by the owner I was too urban to shop at Convert. Called «your people» urban.

They have some pretty cool stuff here. Sometimes you have to look through the racks a bit to find the gems, but I recommend this place to a lot of people, especially people who are looking for a cool clothes place in Berkeley. They have a pretty extensive collection of denim, especially for men. They carry some LVC Levi’s stuff, which I love.

Amazing experience. Regina spent almost an hour with me going over jeans, shirts, jackets, everything. I ended up with a bunch of new items including some Pendleton shirts and AG jeans. The stuff is expensive, no doubt, but it’s all well curated and well made clothing. Nothing is overly hip, it’s the kind of clothing that looks good but is comfortable to wear and be seen in. I’m definitely coming back.

I enjoy the 4^th St shopping district in Berkeley. There are a some good restaurants, a Vino wine shop, an Apple outpost, MAC makeup store, a Pasta Shop location with a fabulous salad bar, tons of outside seating, one of the last book stores in the area, a free parking lot and much more.
Fourth St also has several über expensive boutiques catering to the my money burns a hole in my pocket crowd. These are not my people and generally not my stores, but I really like Convert.
I went to the shoe store, the clothing store is on the other side of the street. Great selection. I loved the stylish shoes and spotted a pair of particularly attractive flats but was prepared for a ridiculous price tag. The shoes were gorgeous reasonably priced and comfortable. I bought them and love my cute recycled, stylish shoes from Convert on 4^th St. Check it out.

I heart Convert. I don’t think I’ve ever gone in and come out empty-​handed. I can always trust they will have something that is just the style that I’m looking for. Most recently, I purchased a new little black dress. It’s quite simple, but fun. Fits perfectly and is super comfortable.
But really… it’s the customer service. The girls who are usually working in this store are always bubbly and totally devoted to helping their shoppers find the right piece. They are very warm – welcoming. This really means a lot in today’s world where I have had the experience more than once of walking into a boutique type place (meaning I should expect at least a little one-​to-​one customer service), but received nary a greeting upon walking into the place. The sales associates at Convert seem to really care about their customers.
I’d definitely recommend a visit if your style is urban chic, or if you just need a healthy dose of superb customer service.

This place has an amazing selection, and surprisingly some cute affordable shoes! The price range tends to be higher for the most part, but I did find some awesome New Balance shoes on sale.
Not that I’m a huge fashionista, but in my humble opinion, they carry some of the best offerings from different brands. I’ll definitely be back!

I love Convert Shoes. They have a great selection and I always end up leaving with more than what I expected to get!
The reason I didn’t give 5 stars in because every time I go in they boast that some styles from lines like Jeffrey Campbell have been created exclusively for Convert which is just not true. A couple pairs that I have been told that about and bought I have seen on other shopping sites. I would have bought them even without that selling point but I did feel a little cooler thinking I was getting something not everyone who shops at the larger stores was.
Other than that I love this store and will continue to shop here again and again!

It’s a pleasure shopping, browsing, just being at Convert. How cool of them to make an effort to be environmentally conscious. This store has lots of well made garments that can last for a long time if you take good care of them. While some people may think the prices are steep, I believe that they’re just an investment in looking your best. Why spend the same amount of money on a few pairs of shoddy jeans that were fashioned in a sweat shop when you can come here and buy a gorgeous, flattering pair that were made under humane circumstances?
The vibe of the shop is very comfortable and puts you at ease. It feels part vintage and part eco-​chic but minimal enough that the focus falls on the clothes. I like being able to read the descriptions of the collections while shopping. The customer service can be a little overwhelming for someone like me who loves to shop completely alone but if you’re into being styled or like being assisted, they’ve got your back. They carry brands like Naked and Famous, Citizens of Humanity, Prairie Underground, Emu, and many more.
If you seek footwear, they have a sister store across the street, which is pretty sweet if you ask me. From what I’ve seen, the stars of their inventory are the exclusive vegan shoes designed by Jeffrey Campbell but they stock many styles for casual and dressed up occasions.
On top of all the aforementioned perks, this is a fantastic his and her shop. They’ve got plenty of men and women’s fashions to choose from, ranging from simple basics to bolder statement pieces. Granted, I don’t like everything they stock (*cough* TOMS *cough* — respect what they do, hate how they look) but there’s no doubt that the owner is an experienced and thoughtful buyer with a great understanding of his clientele.
Trendy street wear with an added bonus of good karma. If you haven’t already, get on this hype.

Shoe side —
Shoes average $ 50 — $ 200 which isn’t bad at all. They have a huge selection of Toms, and Jeffery Campbell. Most of what they offer is wearable street shoes with an edgy twist. Great colorful walkable sandals are easy to find here.
The staff is great, they work on both sides. Not too talkative, cool, non-​judgmental, not all in my facial (good thing).
Clothing side —
Sweet unique finds and brands. Too pricy for my budget. Average $ 50 — $ 500, most items were around the $ 100-​$ 300 range from what I saw. A friend tried on a bangin asymmetrical fitted leather jacket here. They sell tons of pants and stylish clothing.
Adding this place to my Fourth street pop-​in list.

A great men’s store. Quality, customer service and good looking clothing. For men. This store consistently gets it done, and does it well. And it’s a men’s store, too. For men. So no longer do I have to wish that some catalog/​department store will have something interesting – I literally walk to this store and they always have something I like. For men. I mean, how many stores actually have clothing for men? Yes it’s expensive, blah blah blah, but the clothes are good and they stand behind them fully.
Solid, solid business and nice people.

My son wanted raw denim jeans. After faithfully doing a bit of research, the jeans he wanted were made of denim in Japan and produced in Canada, aka, Naked & Famous. Go figure.
Two women, Zion and Ting Ting, helped my boy with several styles and sizes. For the $ 175 price tag, we got our money’s worth! Really, it’s a serious investment and these ladies were as lovely as can be. One even looked at by 15 yr old’s butt and said, «nice fit!» Our inside joke…
«Winner, winner, chicken dinner!» Yes, we later dropped off a Café Rouge rotisserie chicken for these lovely ladies! Thanks, girlies for your great service!

Great store (s) — shoe store Convert is on the west side of 4^th street, clothing store is 100 feet away on the east side. Be sure to hit both. Great quirky clothing. Wonderful service. Max, Stephanie, Megan, Randy, the petite asian gal, and the friendly white guy have all provided me with excellent assistance at some point or another. This is going to be my goto spot for clothing based Xmas gifts this year. Does anyone know if they do gift cards?
