Established in 1980.

Steve Vigeant began Berkeley Signs in the early 1980s as he repainted faded signs from the back of his station wagon. He and his wife Darlene have operated Berkeley Signs together for the past ten years. Berkeley Signs features classic workmanship utilizing a wide variety of sign making techniques — from traditional hand lettering, gold leaf and mural pictorials to precision-​cut metal, digital imaging and innovative materials.



Our signs are highly visible and are seen daily by thousands of Bay Area residents. We maintain successful relationships with hundreds of local businesses, non-​profit institutions and numerous municipalities. Our clients range from small retail shop owners to the larger industrial and corporate sectors. In 2006 Berkeley Signs is featured in the internationally distributed Sign Craft magazine.

Steve has so far made four beautiful signs for Aurora School in Oakland — both indoor and outdoor. He was very helpful in making suggestions for the best way for us to meet our goal of being more visible in our neighborhood. We also appreciated that he was conscious of our budget needs. Having just finished a second school year with his signage, we are thrilled with how our exterior signs are holding up. We are so pleased with his work that we just had him make two plaques for us in honor of retiring teachers and they are striking (both the teachers and the plaques!)

I am extremely impressed with their level of customer service. I reached out to them in a bind on a ridiculous deadline and they were up front and honest about what they could do and even sent me a recommendation, when it was determined they wouldn’t meet my crazy deadline. Most companies would have dropped you after they realized they couldn’t work with you. But their quick response, care and willingness to go above and be beyond warrant five stars.

We had a fading & peeling sign in front of our coffeeshop and Steve did a great job providing us with a higher quality, more durable replacement. Steve was direct and clear in his communication beforehand, and I felt confident before he showed up (exactly when expected) that I would be getting what I needed for the quote we agreed on. Our storefront will be looking shiny and bright for years to come!
I will definitely be using Berkeley Signs’ services in the future for any of our signage needs, and greatly recommend them for your business.

Steve does what he says he will do and, if there is a problem, he takes care of it. I will work with him again, for sure. He has a casual style and isn’t trying to just make money. He wants his customers happy and taken care of and it shows in everything he does. He did a sign for us in Lafayette, CA and I recommend him highly.

I am quite happy with the job Steve did on my business sign. I found Steve easy to contact (office, email and cell phone), responsive to my suggestions, concerned to save me money all the while delivering quality, and very pleasant to deal with. He was also on time for both the appointments we made (first to look at the work at stake, then to apply the vinyl signs on my windows.) As my own work schedule is tight, I appreciate the professionalism he showed throughout, as much as his design expertise.

Steve helped me pick the perfect colors, and the sign was great.
I also appreciated that they were flexible with me when I thought I had to cancel my order. When things changed and I was able to go ahead with my order they installed the signs quickly.

Steve was great to work with. Sometimes you know when someone has «it». Steve does. He took my logo for «Oakland Floats» and created a beautiful hand-​painted rendition with gold highlights that «glows» at certain angles when the sun hits it just right. Thanks Steve!

Steve is the MAN! From the get go there was a great balance of professionalism and flexibility. Our collaboration to design the sign for my Audi/​VW shop, Karmakanix, worked out really well, and his execution was on point with what we had discussed. 2) Berkeley Signs for creating an amazing corporate identity sign for our new offices with little more than a printed copy of our logo. It is stunning.
