Our staff is made up of caring and dedicated professionals who strive to meet our patients’ needs efficiently and compassionately. We are here to listen and provide solutions leading to your better health.

We have been helping patients in the San Francisco Bay Area with their periodontal needs for over 30 years. Our well-​established office works together with hundreds of referring dentists to deliver excellent care to thousands of smiling and satisfied patients.

Drs. Pia Lodberg, Carol Grimm, Ryan Horn, and Barron Hong specialize in periodontics and dental implants. Our goal is to deliver the highest standard of professional periodontal care in a comfortable and friendly environment. As periodontists, we specialize in the prevention and treatment of gum disease, the maintenance of periodontal health, periodontal plastic surgery, and dental implant replacement of teeth.

History

Established in 1970.

Our office was founded by Dr. Al Bradley in 1970 as one of the first periodontal specialty offices in the area. The office opened in its current location in 1978.

Drs. Lodberg, Grimm, Horn, and Hong are specialists in periodontics and dental implants. Our practice focuses on the conservative treatment of gum disease, periodontal plastic surgery to aesthetically enhance your smile, dental implants to replace teeth, and oral pathology.

We make every effort to ensure that your visits to our practice are comfortable and pleasant. Our patients’ comfort is an important part of the quality care that we deliver. We are here to listen to your questions and concerns and to help provide solutions leading to your better health.

We work closely with your dentist to coordinate treatment and share information; however, a referral by a dentist is not required to visit our office. We also welcome referrals from patients and friends of the practice.

Barron H.

Manager

Dr. Horn received his doctorate of dental surgery from University of Southern California, completed a postgraduate residency in hospital dentistry at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Portland, OR, and completed his postgraduate training in periodontics at the Oregon Health and Science University.

Dr. Hong received his doctorate of dental medicine from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He completed his postgraduate training in periodontics and received a master’s degree in oral and craniofacial sciences at UCSF.

Dr. Lodberg received her dental degree from the Royal Dental College in Copenhagen. She received her postgraduate training in periodontology at the UCSF.

Dr. Grimm received both her undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of Michigan. She completed her postgraduate degree from UCSF.

Dr Barron Hong is the BEST! I’ve had three different gum graft procedures with Dr Hong. He patiently answered all my questions (I had a lot) and after the procedures would check in on me to see how I was holding up. On top of that, the grafts came out so well that my regular dentist had to give compliments.
Dr Hong was also super understanding of my financial situation given the extent of the work I needed (which was/​is a lot).

I recently had periodontal work done by Dr. Barron Hong. The experience was outstanding. Even that first prick of the needle for numbing the area was painless. The entire process was efficient and professional. Dr. Hong and his technical assistant Katie did a seamless job. I highly recommend this team! Also, the front office was excellent and friendly.

Dr. Horn Rocks. Ok, he’s great but I know what you are thinking, there’s probably a ton of periodontists around whose technical skills cannot be faulted. You’re right. But here’s the difference. Dr. Horn is uniquely responsive, flexible, has a dry sense of humor and treats his patients like adults. Refreshing. Don’t get gum surgery if you don’t have to. I am kind of phobic when it comes to big dental work and I had avoided it for years. Dr. Horn and everyone in his office made me feel at ease. Surgery was totally uneventful. My gums are feeling good. Pretty much all you could ask for.
(NB ladies: He’s skilled, but also the tiniest bit hot. So floss those teeth and don’t expect an old guy!)

Dr. Horn is EXCELLENT!
My dentist has been telling me for three years that I needed to fix a receding gum line, and finally I got the courage to do it. They highly recommended me to Dr. Horn. His staff was friendly and punctual on the phone and at the office.
When I first met Dr. Horn for a consultation, he was very thorough and addressed all of my questions and concerns. I was never rushed, and felt he was extremely professional. My procedure was a breeze, as were the two follow-​up appointments (7 days and 6 weeks). If Dr. Horn took patients as a regular dentist, I would switch to him today.
I highly recommend — don’t be scared like I was for so long!!!

I am picky about my healthcare and found Dr. Hong after doing very thorough research on the type of dentist that is best suited to perform my implant.
I had one of my large molars extracted after it became infected. I was without tooth for about a year, before going to Dr. Hong. The procedure went smoothly and the implant was set. About a month later, the cap became loose and I had to go back and Dr. Horn was able to screw it back on. He was also very pleasant. These things happen from time to time and I was told not to use a waterpik, but did anyway. Probably should’ve listened to Dr. Hong’s instructions in the first place!
Anyway, after my implant I had to choose a dentist to mold the abutment and crown. I found Dr. Kinsel in Foster City. He took a look at the implant and remarked that «he did a very good job». He said the gum tissue and implant looked very good. He asked who I went to. I told him Dr. Hong. He was thoroughly impressed. He showed me the screw/​cap they used and said it was «very smart of him» to use this type of shape for healing tissue. Now, just to put this in perspective, Dr. Kinsel is the director of implant dentistry at UCSF.
So, don’t take my word. Take another very reputable dentist’s word!
If you need an implant, go to Dr. Hong!

After a few friends told me how awful gum grafts were, I was prepared for the worst. But… Barron Hong did my gum graft with ZERO pain and minimal discomfort. I didn’t need a single pain med. I am very happy with the whole experience.

Dr. Barron Hong was a godsend when I needed 2 implants done. I was already consulting with another periodontist in SF and was not happy with his bedside manners. I happen to run into a friend who just had an implant done and raved about her periodontist. She said it was so painless that she fell asleep during the procedure. So I immediately switched periodontist to Dr. Hong. Even though I never fell asleep during the procedure, Dr. Hong was gentle, courteous and explained the procedure well. He allayed any fears that I had.
If the need ever arise in the future, I will not hesitate to go back to Dr. Hong. I have also since referred several of my friends to him.

A few months back I was in need of an implant for a tooth I had cracked a couple of years back. I had been dreading the procedure as I understood it to be painful, time consuming, and expensive. Unfortunately, because I had delayed replacing my extracted tooth with an implant, the tooth opposite began to «erupt» i.e. grow bigger and at a funny angle — apparently this happens if you’re missing a tooth… It was upon learning this that I decided I had to do something about my missing toothm — pain, money and inconvenience aside. I asked around and Dr. Hong’s name kept coming up as the best. Finally, I decided that Dr. Hong would be the one to fix my tooth and I’m glad he did. The procedure, was nearly painless and the entire experience was very efficient. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Dr. Hong to my grandmother…

I highly recommend Dr. Hong! Roughly two years ago I started the process of getting an implant for my front tooth. During our consultation Dr. Hong walked me through the entire process and in the subsequent months he completed the implant. Surprisingly enough the process was relatively painless. Two years later, I am extremely happy with the results and have had absolutely zero issues with the implant. Dr. Hong did an amazing job and was a pleasure to work with.

I was referred here by my regular dentist (Dr Koppel in Berkeley) and my suspicions were confirmed: a world-​class operation and well-​oiled machine. I had a crown lengthening performed a few weeks ago. Flawless procedure, thoughtful follow-​up, nothing left to chance. It is reassuring and uplifting to come across professionals who care and are deeply invested in their craft and Dr Hong is no exception.
Between the two offices (my regular dentist’s and this one), there was only one downside: while the software industry has been good to me, I discovered with some regret that I wish I had considered dentistry after spurning medicine.

Dr. Barron Hong was the person that I have mostly dealt with at this business. He and the front office staff merit one star. I came here because I had a tooth that needed to be pulled and replaced with an implant. The price was fairly high and the front office staff offered me no payment plan other than using my credit card.
Dr. Hong was supposed to extract my tooth, but because of a personal emergency, Dr. Ryan Horn substituted for him. I suffer from cold injuries, and I communicated my needs around this when he called me to tell me that Dr. Hong couldn’t make it.
Dr. Horn on his own was fabulous to work with. He and his assistant made sure the office was warm and cozy. He took great care in extracting my tooth and if one can have a pleasant tooth extraction experience, I think this was as close to it as it comes. He even called me the next day to see how I was doing.
A few months later Dr. Hong contacted me to schedule the dental implant. I tried to work with his staff on the payments, but was told again that payment was due at the time of service and that I could use my credit card, period. I scheduled the appointment.
When I came in, I started immediately having a physical reaction because it was cold in the office Despite the fact that I had preciously communicated this to them, and even called that morning to make sure they were aware, the air conditioner was going full blast. I started going into anaphylactic shock in the office, but no one came out to help me. I got no apology, no nothing, except for a call from Dr. Hong a few weeks later to schedule another appt. for an implant.
Again, I was concerned the price quoted me was very high, but there was no negotiating and no offer to compensate me for the wasted time and threat to my medical condition they had caused.
UPDATE: Dr. Horn has contacted me and has assured me that my situation is being addressed. We have/​are working together to make sure that I can get my periodontal work going forward directly from him. On his own, I would give Dr. Horn five stars. He is the ONLY reason this review isn’t one star.

I had Dr. Horn repair damage done by a bike accident where I lost 2 front teeth. I had significant bone loss, and in order to do an implant and cantilevered bridge to replace them, he first had to do 2 very delicate bone grafts over a period of 18 months, then place the implant, and finally when all was healed my wonderful dentist placed the bridge and crown of the implant.
Dr. Horn was so kind throughout this difficult process, he called me personally after each surgery to make sure all was well and comfortable for me, he made sure my partial looked good while I was waiting for final implant, and I simply cannot recommend him highly enough. You will be in good hands.

I went to Dr. Ryan Horn for a consultation about receding gums. He spent a great deal of time with me and explained everything I needed to know. He and the office staff are personable, professional and really make a dental appointment as pleasant as it can be. Dr. Horn seems conservative about surgery, only recommending what is really needed right now. I appreciated this because I had a previous dentist that pushed work that I really didn’t need.
I had gum surgery and found Dr. Horn to be patient, kind and gentle. He personally called me evening of the surgery to see how I was doing. The outcome is great — I have healthy gum (he did a graft of my own gum), growing where previously the roots of my tooth were exposed.
Ann also worked with my insurance company to figure out maximum benefits.
If you need a periodontist, look no further. This is a doctor and a staff that will take good care of you.

I’ve had three gum grafts with Dr. Grimm and my husband has had two. She is competent, efficient, and has a very kind manner. She actually apologizes before she does something that might cause you pain :-)
If you have to have your mouth attacked, I can’t imagine it gets any better than this.

Recently had two separate gum graft procedures with Dr. Grimm and both went very well. I too had read about horror stories with grafts in internet reviews, but the actual procedure was quick, Dr. Grimm and her assistant were professional and organized, the pain was minimal and follow-​up was thorough. The molding clay for my roof-​of-​mouth incision fell off after about 5 days, and the clay covering the graft itself fell of after about 8 days, but I was told that is normal.
Strongly recommended.

Was referred here by Robin Whitney, my regular dentist. Went here for a consultation regarding the possible need for a gum graft because of a minor injury beneath my front tooth. Front office staff was helpful and very professional. Dr. Grimm had a thoughtful demeanor, was a good listener, and was efficient. She told me to come back for a follow up visit at no charge, as it was too early to tell whether the injury would heal itself or not.
Then the front staff told me that my dental plan would not cover the visit, because it was too soon after my last consultation. Dr. Grimm called out from the next room that they should classify my visit as a different visit category. This meant that my insurance could be billed, so she probably saved me around $ 100!
