History
Established in 2012.
Owner, Dennis Cullen, started Choices, one of the first non-smoking bars, in Benicia in the early 1990’s. In 2012, Dennis and his wife, Denise, opened Cullen’s Tannery pub in the same location as O’Leary’s Pub, which had closed after 30 years. The couple felt a local pub was missing from their community, so they strove to create a fun and intriguing pub experience for both residents and visitors to historic downtown Benicia.

Business Owner
The owners of Cullen’s Tannery Pub have drawn from multiple inspirations for their new venture, in which patrons can choose from a variety of craft and artisanal beers and spirits, play games on consoles and admire the «Steampunk» décor. The Cullen’s are longtime Benicia residents. Dennis was involved with the Commandant’s Quarters in the Arsenal, and later he opened Choices, a popular nightclub for 18 years in Benicia. The Cullen’s picked their pub’s motif with a purpose: The historic time period of ‘Wild West’ Benicia, plus the Tannery — leather, industry. «Steampunk» is a label for genres of speculative fiction and art that focuses on steam-powered technology, inspired in part by machines described by H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. Brass, copper, leather and wood are typical Steampunk materials, and Steampunk décor frequently resembles something that might have been designed for use in Victorian-era Great Britain or the American Wild West — with a futuristic twist!
