Specialties

The Van’s is more than ‘Rooms with a Panoramic View’!

We say «A Touch of Down Home… on the Hill! Featuring Prime Rib of Beef, Lobster or our famous «Fat & Juicy Hamburger every night! The Van’s also offers eclectic menus with items for Lunch, Dinner and Bar Appetizers with our ethnic flair. We also feature ‘Late Night’ dining all 7 nights! The History of the building itself is quite unique and the longest existing establishment for Hospitality on the Peninsula!

History

Established in 1947.

The Van’s has a long unique history! The Building was built as part of the Japanese Tea Garden in the 1915 Pan American Exposition commemorating the opening of the Panama Canal. When the Exposition closed they chose to keep the Palace of Fine Arts and The Van’s structure was purchased privately and barged down the bay and pulled by horse while rolling on logs up the hill to it’s current location. During prohibition, it was a Speakeasy and there were rumors to the use of the upstairs bedrooms while called Elsie’s. When Elsie passed it was sold and converted into a legitimate Bar & Restaurant operation known as GeVan’s owned and operated by Gene Soule & Ivan Sawyer. When Ivan bought out Gene in 1957, he renamed it The Van’s and owned and operated The Van’s until Loring De Martini purchased it from him in 1973. Loring continues to serve the finest food & beverages in The Van’s warm & friendly atmosphere for almost 40 years! Cheers lives on!

Loring D.

Business Owner

Loring was born in San Francisco and raised in Burlingame. During his youth he was managing delicatessens at age 13 and Bartended @ «The Putter» the hottest nightclub on the peninsula when he turned 21 years of age. When he completed his college studies at CSUSJ with a degree in Accounting and Real Estate he chose to buy The Van’s instead of continuing on to school and become a Tax Lawyer.
