We’re the design division for A-​1 Builders in Bellingham, WA. As a design/​build company, with a showroom as well, we can help you from start to finish. Drawings, specifications, pre-​remodel inspections, permit acquisition, reducing your ecological footprint… we do it all. And we incorporate sustainable building and business practices wherever we can.

History

Established in 1955.

Our early days were involved predominantly with foundations under existing structures. Over time we incorporated more and more remodeling until, these days, we rarely if ever work on existing foundations. Today we’re all about additions, second stories, kitchens, bathrooms, hardscaping, tenant improvements, and the like… For decades now we’ve been weaving in sustainable business and building practices so that, today, we’re considered the region’s premier sustainability-​focused, design/​build remodeling firm.

Meet the Business Owner

Rick D.

Business Owner

Rick bought A-​1 Builders in 1976 and has been at the helm ever since. His passion for wilderness travel in the Cascades and beyond has not wavered since he arrived here from the east coast. An avid bicycle commuter, he’s also very involved with environmental activism. He helped to co-​found Sustainable Connections and Futurewise Whatcom, as well as serve on the Board of RE Sources seemingly forever!
