History
Established in 1955.
We’ve traced our roots back to 1928 when the business was called Washington Builders. The name changed to A-1 Builders in 1955. Then in 1976 Rick Dubrow bought the company and has been at their helm ever since. Although the business specialized in foundation repairs back in the ’70’s, we took on more and more standard remodeling so that now we do virtually no foundation work. For so many people our company is synonymous with the readerboard out front, offering humorous and philosophical quotations that change twice a week!

Business Owner
Rick bought the existing business in 1976 after deciding to leave his career path in airport noise abatement on the east coast. His passion for wilderness travel in the Cascades has remained his main hobby. An avid bicycle commuter, Rick has also been very active as an environmental activist over the years, co-founding Sustainable Connections, Futurewise Whatcom and Living Democracy. Throw in about 17 years as a Board member of RE Sources and you’ll find that his work in green building is simply one of many local issues Rick has been very involved with.
