Saint Dominic Savio

I visit the church almost 3-​times a week and I see a group of people praying the rosary and divine mercy chaplet after the 6:30 am mass. I guest they pray there everyday and I admire and respect their intentions. However, I have observed that when they are praying, especially the rosary, they are not in unison and they sound like the tower of babel with many sounds that are unintelligible.
I have read that the rosary is a meditation and should be prayed at a convenient rate of speed — neither too quickly or too slowly — saying the prayer in unison and not start ahead of the others, that way their prayers will be raised to God in one tone. Can someone tell them about this so that they will have more participants. God Bless

Our family just love St. Dominic Savio church! We’ve known this church for a long time but since we live closer to another church, it was less convenient for us to come here. But last year, we’ve been going here since we found the atmosphere very friendly and so many active ministries going on. Also, Fr. Chinh, Fr. Kristian and the other priests give great sermons that challenges us in our everyday struggles. They’re always available when we need them and they’re very genuine and humble reminding us of the awesome presence of God in them! I have three older children and they like going to church instead of just being forced to go. The church even gave each family a gift last Christmas– a book titled Rediscover Jesus and it’s been a great read! We’re truly blessed to be a part of the Salesian family! It is a beautiful church, I agree. I’ve been to mass with the Spanish priest and he is really good. The community is friendly.
But I would like to share something that happened there last Saturday. My two sons did their first communion there last Saturday, and I had a really bad experience with a nun named sister Carmen. I don’t know if anybody else knows her or if they would agree with me or not, but, for my children’s communion, I had to attend a couple of meetings with her and I was able to see how rude she was to people. If people were late, she would put them on the spotlight and embarrass them. If someone was making a little bit of noise during her meetings, she would kick them out. She has no good manners at all, no respect for people. She never did anything directly to me during those meetings but my boys, who attended catechism classes there for 2 years, told me how all children were scared of her and how mean she was to children.
Last Saturday, during my boys first communion, my daughter who is a 2 year-​old toddler was getting fuzzy and started crying. My mother and I took her outside of church. My mom said, «the baby is probably sleepy, I’m going to take her to the car and stay there with her. You go and be present at your boys communion.» I went back inside the church just to get my car keys to give them to my mother.
When I went back outside, my mother was very upset. She told me that, when I went inside the church, (my mom and daughter stayed outside, and my daughter was crying). Sister Carmen approached my mom and told her to take the baby away because she was disturbing mass. (even though they were outside). My mom told her we were in the process of doing that, she was waiting for me to give her the car keys. Then sister Carmen told my mom, «Move farther away or make her stop crying while you wait. Why don’t you hit her so she can be quiet?». My mom couldn’t believe what she had just heard. She said «What??? I’m not going to do hit her!!!» Then, the nun just turn around and called my baby «Chiflada», Which means Crazy in Spanish. After my daughter had calmed down, my mom tried to go back inside church, Sister Carmen’s helper told my mother to leave church and don’t go back in again (because of the argument my mom had just had with Sister Carmen).
How can a nun and her helper deny the entrance to church to someone? How can the nun, who is supposedly a sister in God, and a very pious and spiritual woman, suggest that we hit a toddler? That happens when ignorant people get to be in a position where they feel they have a little bit of power or authority over people, like this nun does.
My mother was very upset. She complained to the priest, after mass, but I doubt he is going to do anything about it. I just wanted to share with you how outrageous I feel and share the experience we had with that nun. Maybe my comment or my mother’s complain won’t change anything, but I’m hopping some of you would read it and be aware of how this woman is. Good luck to you!

The most amazing Perish and the people are really friendly… I’m not the best of Catholics but this place makes me feel if just for an hour that I can be a better person :)

Beautiful church, I love that they are green as they project the entire mass on two giant screens for you to follow the mass thoroughly. Saving thousands of trees. It’s open & clean and just all around nice. Today’s mass was very nice as the priest celebrated birthdays, wedding anniversaries & even presented a 20 day old newborn baby. The mass schedule is also very convenient.

I’ve been searching for a church and I found it. Parking can get really crowded. Also it’d be nice to have Sunday school for kids.

Another place I used to frequent, and nowadays visit occasionally, that got skipped in the review process… strange strange…
Anyway, I’ve always been a fan of St. Dominic Savio; the parish community seems friendly and always welcoming. Things have changed progressively over the years; they now have two projectors showing practically every prayer, song and reading throughout the entire mass. I’m not sure if that’s done to cater to a largely bilingual crowd, or just to keep the entire congregation more involved, but I’d prefer just the songs being up there. Sometimes it’s a distraction to me to read… nonetheless, still a good church to go to.
I actually sang in the choir for a couple of years back when I was living in the area and it was an awesome experience. The music ministry has changed since then and has kinda dipped a little, but they definitely aren’t lacking in effort or in volunteers; just prob need better direction and leadership.
can’t remember the morning mass times, but they have a 5PM evening mass, which is almost always the one I attend.
Parking — can be a very bad headache, esp for the big masses like Christmas eve, easter, and Ash Wednesday. Fortunately, there’s additional parking at the school, and you can park locally in the neighborhood… but get to mass early, as we all should!

I went to school here my elementary years, nothing special about this school. Yeah maybe the classes were smaller and they taught you bible scripture but its nothing I couldn’t have learned from going to public school. I always wondered were all that money went to all those poor parents had to pay monthly, I guess it all went to the Vatican.

Best mass schedule for my working day — 12noon, 8 am daily masses.
Beautiful sacred space, modern, spacious with a lot of natural light. Bring a light sweater since it tends to be cool (all stone construction).
Whoever is decorating the church does a great job of using thoughtful, serene décor. Nothing too garish or overly ornate.
I wonder however whether the liturgical vessels are okay — I read somewhere that these should be made of metal or wood, but the Consecrated wine (Sacred blood) is served in cut-​glass chalices to the worshipers. I am hoping there is never an accident that would cause breakage at all.
Run by the Priestly Order of Salesians (they also oversee the elementary school on the same property & all male high School of Don Bosco, which is across the parking lot, separated by a fence from the elementary school). The priests here all give very concise homilies — Best 30 to 45 minutes you could ever spend in a day.
There is a separate all-​day Adoration chapel to one side fo the church. There are a limited number of seats in there. If you are aware of the practice of Silent Adoration, this is a very good place to spend that time.
The regular daily mass church goers tend to sit in their «spots» so I’ve sometimes felt they were unwelcoming, but that’s just my impression.
All in all, it’s a very good place to worship.

I truly enjoy the church and I planned to become a reg but I am dissapointed that they dont offer sunday school for the kids if I find church that does I will change theres no point of taking the kiddos if they don’t get it.

It seemed like a good academic institution but most of what I remember is buying scripts. My cousin was sheltered by high standards of behavior from Catholic school and every class picture seemed the same each year, with that red sweater. He liked his teachers. I think his friendships were awkward because other children didn’t live in the neighborhood. It helped when the school had carnivals.

A great school and parish community. I attended school here 1^st through 8^th. Some of my best friends to this day are from my years at Savio. Academically the school could have used a stronger science curriculum but that would be my only complaint from my years there. The tuition charged is comparable to that charged at other parochial schools and far less than most secular private schools. The benefits one receives by way of building moral character, forming of lasting friendships and faith formation make it worth every penny. I will definitely consider Savio when it comes time to send my little ones to school.
