Specialties
Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals exists because of the high euthanasia rates of unwanted pets. We started in 2001 when a group of us found out that our local animal shelter wasnt a shelter at all but a place to wait and die. We started out as 4 people and 13 years later we do over 1000 adptions a year and rescue over 2000 animals. We provide community service with veterinary care, food donations and transport services to other rescues and non profit agencies.
History
Established in 2001.
Oregon Friends of Shelter Animals (OFOSA) has been in operation since 2002 when Cathy Nechak and a small group of friends banded together to help local shelters in order to improve shelter conditions and animal care through training, volunteer medical support and fundraising. In 2003 OFOSA was granted 501©(3) status and continued to grow. By 2005, when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, OFOSA had developed a core group of volunteers with the passion and skills to make a difference for the animals left stranded by the storm. OFOSA volunteers traveled to New Orleans, provided food, shelter and care for all the animals they could. It was this sentinel event that truly established OFOSA as an independent rescue in our own right.
