Really affordable excellent sushi. I wanted to get a traditional hot dish but just couldn’t resist the sushi menu. Terrific quality and very fresh!

Good food but slightly more expensive than it should be. My mother loved the udon. The ramen broth was the best I have tasted in Portland but the pork belly needs to be cut into smaller chunks or else you will end up with a mouthful of fat.

We loved Hakatamon back when it was inside Uwajimaya grocery store for its food quality as well as service, but I must admit we were disappointed with their skewer«assortment» they sold for $ 24.95 this weekend. Turns out we got an assortment of gizzards, intestines, and other meats they probably couldn’t sell on the menu(‘cuz no one would order it!) For that price, we thought we’d be getting steak bites, shrimps, and at least some edible meat! The restaurant could also use some serious curb appeal, but I understand that takes money and time. On the plus side, the service was excellent, as usual.

Came in for an early dinner and we were among the first to show up but within a half hour 8 more tables got filled so this is a popular place. Our service was speedy and our waiter was excellent. He offered to tailor any of our dishes like the grilled fish to our tastes. All the food we ordered came within 10 – 15 minutes of ordering. We were impressed at how speedy it was. All the dishes were good and the menu has a great array of different types of food to try out in the future. This is gonna be our new goto Japanese restaurant in the Beaverton area from now on!

Ramen was bland & the little fried chicken things that came with it were undercooked. Disappointed.

Got sushi for lunch, the sushi was great but we only got three items and it took 35 minutes to get our food. We were one of three tables in there. We then waited and waited for someone to bring the check but finally had to go up to the kitchen and make them ring us up. Not a great place for lunch due to the fact that they are in no rush to serve you.

I liked this restaurant before they moved, I believe the location was really nice being right next to Uwajimiya and it might just be me but I feel like the quality of food was nicer. Don’t get me wrong, their new location is ok but it’s much darker and has a way different feel to it. Also harder to park. It doesn’t feel quite as homey and the atmosphere is a lot more unprofessional in a sense. I will still continue to go here when I’m in the mood for japanese food and I’m in the area. I used to get the curry but now I settle for the soba and yakitori. The service is just ok and they’ll come check on you maybe once if your lucky, where the previous location the staff and service was much nicer. Still a good place to get some food to eat though.

I came here for lunch with a friend when we were craving sushi. We arrived just around 11:30 am to beat the lunchtime crowd, which never really showed up. We started with the agedashi tofu based on Unilocal!reviews, which I wasn’t that impressed with given that it lacked flavor and was a bit soggy. One thing I liked was that they brought complimentary salad and miso soup, which were pretty standard from what I would expect a Japanese restaurant to deliver. We split a spicy salmon roll, a spicy tuna roll and the spicy lobster roll with fresh snow crab. I liked the spicy salmon roll, but the other two had more mayo than I think is necessary. This place satisfied my sushi craving, but I don’t think that I would return.

Wow the price of the sushi here is really low. The quality of their rolls and sushi is pretty good. It’s not the highest standard but goes well with the price. Even the lunch boxes are ridiculously priced really low with good portion size.

Went here for dinner with the sis, because the«other» ramen joint nearby was too long of a wait. Staff was really friendly, but I felt like a couple of the items we ordered were overpriced. Edamame and tempura app seemed high for the amount you got. Tempura had two small shrimp, one nug of broccoli, a slice of carrot, slice of squash and a slice of potato for $ 8? If you’re going to skimp on the shrimp, at least give more veggies. My sis had the udon stir fry with chicken. That was pretty good. Simple. I got the miso ramen. Replaced ground pork with char-shu. That cost extra, but forgot how much. No biggie. The issue I had though was the $ 1.50 charge to make the ramen spicy. Now, I normally wouldn’t gripe about this, but $ 1.50 for chili paste? That you bring on the side? Can’t you just keep it in a jar at the table? If not, at least put it in the bowl… mix it into the broth! I don’t know why this bothered me so much. Dumb I know, but it just did. On the plus side, they’ll bring you as much of that chili paste as you want for the $ 1.50. And another thing… there was a lot of sliced onion which I thought was a tad odd in ramen. Green onion? Yes, that’s great, but yellow/onions? Weird. I’ve been wanting to try this place for years, since they were at the other location. Finally tried it… but I’m not sure I’ll be back. At least not for ramen. I thought this was a ramen joint(my mistake), but it’s a Japanese restaurant that has ramen. Big difference. I won’t be back for their ramen, but if I’m in the area, I’d pop in for their other foods. Lots of donburi options, lots of yakitori options, lots of sushi. They have a big menu. Other things peaked my interest, but I was on a ramen mission tonight. Overall, nice staff, lots of options for anyone in your dining party and fairly quick service.

Hrm. Hrm! Hrm… I’ll have to come back to this place and give it a second shot. I had a completely different ramen experience here than other Unilocalers. Your mileage may vary, but I’ve made better ramen at home than the stuff I got here. My first impression of the bowl was that it was a scanty portion. The cha-shu pieces were tiny and thin, the noodles rock hard(and never softened), and the broth completely flavorless and forgettable. They offered me minced garlic and pepper before the dish even arrived — which was the first red flag. … All around, a really disappointing ramen. I gave them an extra star for their thorough menu, but the décor is a little ratty, the service unthoughtful, and the cleanliness level hard to judge in the dim lighting. Call this one Two Little Piggies. Go to market, or stay home, but for now I’d say don’t eat here.

This was our first meal in Portland and we were super hungry and cold! What a good idea to get some hot soup on a cold night! We arrived around 7pm and it was sort of crowded but we got seated within 5 minutes. We ordered a couple of the ramen bowls, and some chicken and sushi rolls. There wasn’t much to say about this place. The food was decent but nothing amazing and the service is terrible!!! There was this one lady running around everywhere. Seemed like there was only one server. Poor lady. A lot of our food came out about 30 – 45 mins after of waiting. Needless to say, make sure you don’t have plans after because you will be here for awhile.

Had lunch there today. We both had different special ramens. Mine had only noodles, spicy sesame, bok choy and ground pork. Alas, you can’t really eat the large pieces of bok choy with only chop sticks. The kitchen should cut the bok choy into pieces small enough to be eaten. The ground pork in my ramen hadn’t been heated to the same temperature as the rest of the ingredients so it came across as cold. I assume their theory was that the hot broth would heat it up enough. However, if they’re relying on that happening, they can’t just put a large blob of cold ground pork on top of the other ingredients. My wife’s ramen had many more ingredients and one of the main ingredients was pork belly. I’m not sure how they’d cooked the pork belly but the result was pretty dry and tasteless. Good pork belly should be baked and should be smooth and unctuous. This was smooth enough but the consistency and taste were sub-par. This ramen would have been vastly improved by using more of the thinly sliced pork and much less of the pork belly. The kitchen really needs to go back to the drawing board on their pork belly to get to the point of making you feel guilty for eating it. This pork belly gave one the feeling of having accomplished something not necessarily positive just by eating it. We started with the gyoza. They were not bad but far from gyoza nirvana. It was not bad but we aren’t likely to rush right back.

BEAVERTON, OR: Came to Hakatamon on recommendation from Unilocal and was not disappointed. It’s in a little strip mall and was welcoming and approachable, with simple décor and friendly service. Tried a few items: Tempura Starter(3.5 stars): This was a very typical tempura combo plate. It did have a slice of what appeared to be a butternut or Hubbard squash, which was a nice touch. Agadashi Tofu Starter(3.5 stars): Maybe I am uninitiated, but this wasn’t as exciting to me as it was for everyone else? Some fried cubes of tofu with a nice sauce. Reminded me of cornbread by appearance, but it was a crusty fried tofu. SUSHI: Spicy Lobster Roll(5 stars!): This was excellent! Spicy, cold and warm, flavorful and well presented. Complete treat, a must-order. It was so good we went back and ordered another. Philadelphia Roll(4 stars): very fresh and flavorful, an excellent roll. Crunchy California Roll(4.5 stars): Very low cost and an excellent roll, flash fried and generously portioned, a terrific value. Seared Salmon roll(4 stars): This was really good, we were hoping for a little more flavor to get it to five stars. Overall a great experience and good value, I will return.

First time here and I will definitely return, soon. Most sushi bars are closed on a Sunday but not here! So that’s one star. Second star is because they were packed which is an excellent sign. Third star is for the yakitori menu which includes pork belly and beef tongue! Fourth goes for the quality of the sushi. Really outstanding. The nigiri is simple but fresh and tasty. The rolls are varied and rather than tasting like a mash up of flavors each has a distinct flavor. I highly recommend the unagi and the STT roll. Beer, Kirin on tap! Wine and sake are available. Tucked away in a small strip mall it would be easy to miss this spot. Doing so would be a mistake. They do take out too. I’ve been waiting for another great sushi place near me and now I have found one, hurray!

How all those five stars came out? It’s not Japanese style ramen at all! So disappointed. And don’t even mention the unfresh fish belly. I should take these two-star reviews more serious.

This place is so legit. They have a menu full of yummy authentic Japanese stuff. From curry to ramen to sushi to rice bowls, everything is delicious. The place gets busy and they are low on servers but it’s worth every minute of waiting. Some of my favorite items on the menu are the agedashi tofu appetizer and the hakata ramen. I live in downtown Pdx and take the max out to Beaverton to eat here. Try it out.

We had the kakuni Raman. To preface: I’ve had some really good Raman in Kyoto and Osaka so nothing will compare to that. That said, this was pretty good. Id recommend having it. We were tempted to try the sushi also but I’m glad we didn’t order it as the Raman was pretty filling.

Hakatamon advertises«authentic Japanese food» and, surprisingly, lived up to the hype. After living in Japan for a couple years and then working for Japanese companies in So Cal, I’m kind of desperate to find real Japanese food … especially good Japanese ramen. I found both at Hakatamon in Beaverton. Even though my wife only rates Hakatamon as 4 stars, it leaps to 5 red stars for me because the Ramen was the best I’ve had in Oregon or Washington since moving to the PNW. Beggars can’t be choosy and neither can rameniacs. Our meal started with a plate of fresh Tempura. It was terrific. The Panko Breading was light and slightly crunchy without being overcooked or greasy. I’ll probably order the Tempura again every time I hit Hakatamon … and it was only the second-best thing I tasted there. The star of the meal was a savory bowl of Kakuni Ramen. My wife got a similar order of Chashu Ramen. The only real difference is the Pork Belly in the Kakuni Ramen. Be sure to get a Nitamago soft-boiled egg for your ramen, too. Both bowls featured a flavorful pork broth and near-perfect thin noodles. Hakatamon may not be the best ramen I’ve ever had, but in my constant search for authentic Japanese food in-and-around Portland, I’m very happy to report that there is one more reason to go to Beaverton on a regular basis: Hakatamon and it’s soul-satisfying ramen.

Food is quite good here! Came by for a late lunch and it was almost empty but the service was still very kind and attentive. We loved the skewers that they had(12 chef choices) which included beef tongue, chicken meatballs, jalapeño peppers and more! Favourites included the pig intestines, chicken breast and shiitake mushrooms. Also ordered their ramen and chicken kaarage combo which was a great price. Katsu don was large and flavourful, double salmon roll and caterpillar roll were both good but nothing too special. The tako kaarage was not so good though, being tough and oily. Overall, a good place to eat!

Ok… so I would never consider myself to be some great Ramen aficionado… I grew up in a relatively lower middle class family and Ramen with hot dogs were a reality way before this dish was considered the next haute cuisine… that being said, I’ve eaten ramen in ways beyond the packages recommended suggestions and honestly… only recently, have I eaten it the ‘right’ way… unless playing a game where the person who finds the most hot dog end pieces in their bowl wins is the right way… Nonetheless, Ramen has always been a special, humbling memory in my life. So it only serves to purpose that as a tribute to those hot dog end caps, I have been exploring what it takes to make a great bowl of noodles… essentially, I am collecting elements from various restaurants as the best of ramen. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to find the perfect bowl. Like the woman who can never find a man good enough until she turns into an old spinster, forgoing many decent men in pursuit of ‘the One’, I too will pursue noodle perfection. Have I been damaged by too many packs of Top Ramen? Do I even know what good ramen even tastes like? I’m just so confused… but I do know that Hakatamon is Portland’s champion of broth! We had the Pork broth and it was amazing! Extremely rich and full of flavor and crunchy little wood ears to contrast the tight chewy noodles. The pork choyu is better elsewhere, as are the noodles. but honestly, if you want a ramen fix… this might be my favorite of the four restaurants simply because of the broth. Furthermore we had the Chicken Katsu Curry, which proved to be equally impressive. And despite it arriving last instead of up front as an appetizer, the Tempura Spicy Tuna was by far the most incredible dish of the evening. If only that, I’d give this place 6 stars… err…5, I guess. I shall continue searching for something better than my childhood staple… but Hakatamon has raised the bar on the old hot dog water…

I was delighted to discover this place just moved and did not close. They have a pretty extensive menu though their bento boxes are the best deal. Good quality sushi and sashimi which is my speed but they also make their own noodles and have a lot of yakitori offerings as well. Unfortunately the new location has a pretty tragic parking lot but it is worth it.

Man, I wish they told us about the specials menu before we finished our meal. We came to order grilled skewers, so we were hoping to see the specials menu — it was just hidden on the other side of the placard. We ended up ordering grilled chicken hearts, pork belly, and mushrooms wrapped in beef. My favorite were the chicken hearts. They were also out of Caesar salad, which was a disappointment. We ordered buta kakuni(braised pork belly), karaage(fried chicken), and hakata ramen. The pork belly was sweet, but the meat was tougher than I expected. The chicken in the karaage was thin compared to the thick batter(get Kukai’s karaage). The hakata ramen was pretty good though. I’d probably order that again.

This is our go-to Japanese restaurant. We always get good service and food here. All the sushi rolls we’ve had were fresh and flavorful and the appetizers are great too.(We’ve had the agedashi tofu, green bean tempura, avocado tempura, baby octopus tempura.) We finally got to try the yakitori and tried the chicken heart, gizzards, meatball and thigh. All were good and tasty but our favorite were the gizzards and thigh. I prefer this place over toshi or any other Japanese restaurant in the area.

This was our first stop immediately after landing at PDX and the most delicious way to start off our trip. Don’t let the location/exterior deter you, it’s very clean and casual and welcoming inside. Came with a group of four and ordered a huge assortment of food to share. We started with the agedashi tofu, tempura, and yellowtail collar. Agedashi tofu is amazing! Make sure you start your meal right with this. The tofu has the perfect thickness of coating and is fried to perfection. The sauce adds the perfect amount of flavor to it. Comes with four pieces of tofu. The yellowtail collar here is one of the best I’ve ever had. It was so tender and flavorful. Ask for ponzu sauce to dip the yellowtail in. Following all of that we had a plate of omakase sashimi. Everything on the dish was so fresh and delicious. I love my raw fish but am not too adventurous with other kinds of sashimi like squid, scallops or octopus so stayed away from those. Can vouch for the fish sashimi though – the albacore and tuna were melt-in-your-mouth standouts. Next came the nigiri! Our first plate of sushi came with a total of 16 pieces of fish, of 4 different types – salmon, snapper, chutoro(medium-fatty tuna), and one other kind I forget… Everything was seriously orgasmic. So fresh and so good, this was probably my favorite part of the meal. Our second platter of sushi consisted of more adventurous varieties, like uni, spicy scallops, ebi, red snapper, squid, and fried fish head. Tried the ebi, but wasn’t a fan of the slimy texture of raw shrimp. The fried fish head, however, was surprisingly delicious! It tasted like a deep fried cracker/savory cookie. We ended with the fatty tuna which was really good, but not the best fatty tuna I’ve had. The menu is HUGE and they also offer ramen, bento boxes and more. Judging from some of the other reviews though it seems like the ramen is a miss here. We were very happy with all our orders. Left feeling like my sushi craving was fully satisfied and in a serious food coma.

I always want sushi. Well unless I want Mexican. But really… if you cant combine them somehow(ceviche??) sushi usually wins the battle in my brain. Because I live in Oregon now, not Arizona. During my 14 year marriage to a non sushi person I didnt eat as much… now that Im divorced I kinda seem to be trying to make up for that. Hakatamon was somewhere I dragged my family in the past when it was next to Uwajimaya(which I love). I always thought the food was good and the service bad. I was happy to see Deb F’s review the other day and ready to try them again. After a hard morning antiquing, sushi seemed just the thing. It’s in a surprisingly nice space in an ugly strip mall behind the Chevron at Hall and Cedar Hills. It’s small but nicely decorated. Not too fancy. Clean and casual. I didnt mind the furniture. I liked the framed art on the walls… I think theyre rice bags… maybe…anyone??? Service was friendly and efficient. Miso and salad were tasty. My sushi was fresh and delicious. Dining companion had teriyaki salmon which was perfectly cooked(not over or under). It was a little expensive. But very good. Im going back. For sure.
