Brookside Hide-A-Way and Port Superior Condominiums

Stayed in #12 and #10 so far in 2014. It appeared that a lot of updates had been made to this complex. These studio units are very modern and comfortable. Unit 10 has a kitchenette, which was nice for making breakfast and coffee in the morning. Both are suitable for families, with sleeping options for 4 people. The jacuzzi bathtubs in these units are a real treat after a day of hiking the Brownstone Trail, which connects this complex with the city of Bayfield. So were the electric fireplaces. So cozy! We especially liked being able to walk to Port Superior marina and restaurant as well as evening campfires. This is a hidden gem, especially for the price.

My sister and I took a road trip up to Bayfield, WI for a weekend getaway. Most of the lodging options were full or outrageously priced, but Brookside Hideaway Condos (managed by the same folks in charge of the Bayfield Inn) had a one bedroom with sleeper sofa available for $ 99/​night. We were warned ahead of time that the location is approximately 3 miles south of downtown Bayfield, but weren’t terribly concerned. The idea that we’d have a kitchenette was appealing, and they also offered two beds, which we preferred.
The tiny condo community is VERY quiet and sort of hidden off of Route 13, but a really quick drive to town. The exterior is unimpressive, but fits in with the laid back, woodsy feel of the entire area. We were in a second floor condo (#6, if you care to know), and when we entered the room we were slightly disappointed but not at all surprised.
The condo smelled like old, outdated furnishings and carpeting… and that’s exactly what it contained. I can honestly say I haven’t seen furnishings like this anywhere other than my Grandma’s house. The furniture is right out of 1973, with brass lamps, dark wood, and tweed fabrics. The appliances are the old burnt yellow ones that we had in our house when I was a little kid (I’m 31).
We did enjoy having a kitchen — it allowed us to relax and eat breakfast in our PJ’s before heading into town, and we saved a little money. There was a small envelope on the bedroom dresser with the housekeeper’s names on it, indicating that we could leave a tip if we were so inclined. Uhm, here’s the funny part — we never had housekeeping. We stayed two nights and no one ever brought new towels or sheets or anything. Neither one of us minded not having the housekeeping so much, but we did need sheets for the sofa bed, which we would’ve asked for. In hindsight, we should’ve just called the Bayfield Inn and asked for a set.
Overall, the condos are located in a decent area and are pretty functional. However, they’re in desperate need of a makeover. The highlight of our stay was a visit from the condo manager’s dog, Cocoa. She’s adorable, super sweet, and invited herself into our condo when we had the door open. We’re both dog lovers, so no problem for us.
