Meet the Business Owner
John H.
Business Owner
Welcome to J.R. Maxwell’s! John, Ed, and Margaret have been the owners of the restaurant since 1985 after falling in love with the history of the business and the building (see below). As a customer wrote, the owners are «hard working people», «so good to their employees», and «gave so much of their time to the community & the city of Bath making it the great place that it is».
John Elliot constructed the current building in 1840 and opened The Elliot House, which was a very elegant hotel that served as Bath’s tallest building for many years. After changing ownership many times, the building finally saw the care, restoration, and refurnishing needed to bring it back to life. In 1979, J.R. Maxwell & Co. opened its doors, offering a bill of fare suitable for any ship’s captain. Fascinated with the history of the business and the building, the current ownership took over in 1985, and much of the history of the building is still seen throughout the restaurant today.
