History

Established in 1832.

Established by Stephen Austin, Bastrop is the second-oldest incorporated town in Texas, and was the alternate for the new republic’s capital. This rich history is evident in the more than 130 historic buildings in and around the town center that boasts historic markers and medallions.

For nearly three centuries — longer than anyone can remember — Bastrop has been a good reason for Texas travelers to pull off the beaten path and relax with some of the territory’s best hospitality and scenery.

First to pause here were the Spanish following the Camino Real between San Antonio and eastern Texas (1691). Then came American settlers (later joined by Europeans) with Stephen F. Austin’s «Little Colony», hand hewing the origins of a township that still fits beautifully in the valley between a serene Texas river and the evergreen hills of Bastrop’s Lost Pines 70-square-mile forest.

Meet the Manager

Mike T.

Manager

Michael H. Talbot comes to us most recently from the City of Lampasas, where he served as the City Manager for 9 years. Prior to that, he was the City Manager for the City of Bastrop from 1993 to 1997. He was thought so highly of that when the City Manager position in Bastrop came open in 2006, he was immediately sought after to return to our fair city.

He also served the cities of Mission and Terrell as City Manager and the American National Bank of Terrell, as Vice President of Economic Development. Currently Mr. Talbot serves as Vice President for The Lost Pines Groundwater Conservation District and is an active participant in the National Historic Commission, Bastrop Chamber of Commerce and other organizations.
