Specialties

Karmê Chöling is a Shambhala meditation retreat center and community for people from all walks of life to connect with their basic goodness and the basic goodness of others.

To further our mission, we offer introductory and deep training meditation practices of the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and provide a powerful and supportive retreat environment where all can experience their own basic goodness.

History

Established in 1970.

For more than forty years, Karmê Chöling has been an important Shambhala Buddhist retreat and program center for both new and experienced practitioners. It is the first land-based site established by the founder of Shambhala Buddhism, Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, a 20th century Buddhist meditation master.

Karmê Chöling has introduced thousands of practitioners to the Shambhala, Kagyu and Nyingma Buddhist traditions, as well as the value of mindfulness meditation in daily life.

Originally a Vermont dairy farm, Karmê Chöling was purchased in 1970 by a group of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche’s students, and converted into a Buddhist retreat center.

Since its establishment, Karmê Chöling has been visited and blessed by many of the greatest Buddhist teachers of the 20th and 21st centuries, among them the Sixteenth Karmapa, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso, and Namkha Drimed Rabjam Rinpoche.
