La Cakerie

Very limited assortments of cupcakes. We bought six cupcakes and two small pies. Five of the cupcakes were not fresh. The pies tasted old and the cupcakes were stale and void of taste. Cupcakes should be moist with flavor especially at their prices. We were very disappointed since this place was on my girlfriends bucket list.

How do you say yummy in 12 languages? I love their cupcakes! Typically even at the best cupcake places, the cake or the frosting aren’t equally delicious… Not the case here! I love the black bottom and carrot cupcakes, which are regularly on the menu. There’s always something new and fantastic to try.

I recently got a job in Baltimore and will be moving to the Mt. Vernon area and was so excited to happen upon this gem!
I got two cheesecake cupcakes and they were absolutely amazing. Thankfully I was able to not eat both in one sitting ;)
They’re winners of Cupcake Wars on the Food Network so that was enough to make me want to try them! You won’t be disappointed ;)

Wednesday BOGO cupcakes if you’re a student; Friday BOGO cupcakes for everyone!
Everyday, they have rotating cupcake flavors (located at the top of the cupcake tier). I HIGHLY recommend any of the chocolate flavored ones– oreo is my faaave but I also love the cheesecake (and I hate cheesecake usually) + chocolate mix of the BLACK BOTTOM.
Also, the day old cupcakes are $ 1.75, and taste bomb as well :)

Came here on a whim after having dinner at Aloha because my friend and I have a serious sweet tooth. There were lots of cupcakes to choose from so we had a hard time deciding but I think we made the best choice because both of the cupcakes we had were really good. The carrot cake cupcake was just the right amount of carrot and sweetness. The one with peanut butter and chocolate was really rich but still good. We were both scraping the remains of the cupcake crumbs. I think the only suggestion would be to work on the ambiance because it was so dead quiet that our conversation seemed to echo off the walls and there was no music playing. Oh, but the cakes in their display had me drooling. ugh I wish I had 3 stomachs! I’m looking forward to trying their other sweet treats.

This is a girls’ afternoon paradise. If you want a pastry, cupcake, muffin, or coffee in a fun, bright atmosphere, this is the place for you. Reasonably priced as well!

Place was pretty quiet when I got there. They’ve got a pretty broad selection of cupcakes although there weren’t many cakes and the menu on the chalkboard was not up.
Pretty good bargain for the cupcakes, I saw previous reviews that the cupcakes were expensive but I don’t think so. I got 4 for $ 10, I hear during «happy hour» you can get 6 for that price! For gourmet cupcakes I find that verryyy reasonable.
Got the raspberry coffee cake, pineapple upside down, chocolate, and carrot. Festively decorated, the chocolate had Mardi Gras colored glitter. Overall the frosting is better than the cupcake, cupcakes are a little dry. Chocolate was probably my favorite, coffee cake was good too. The raspberry flavor to it intrigued me but was disappointed to see you can’t really taste it– just a mild tart flavor.
Would go back again.

My friend ordered a dozen cupcakes for an event I attended and while they were adorable and the flavor combinations were creative I simply cannot get over how dry the actual cake was. Unfortunately, taste is the most important component in a dessert. Regardless of how it looks, cake must be moist, especially on the first day. It’s possible it’s a fluke and I would give them another chance but it was pretty disappointing.

Cupcakes are always dry, dense, and lackluster. Cute flavor combinations, and they *look* well made, but because they are delivered from Towson and not made fresh in store — the quality suffers. For the price of two La Cakerie cupcakes, you could get half a dozen (better tasting) cupcakes at Harris Teeter.

The cupcakes are creative (the black bottom one is everything) but a little small. However the price is right at under 3 bucks. They also cell day old ones for under 2 which is fine by me. They sell other sweets there as well. It’s pretty dangerous to the waist but I’ll brave it!

The service was pretty good but the cake I ordered was poorly made. The buttercream icing was pretty much like biting into a stick of butter with a bit on sugar ontop. It had way too much butter and way too little sugar. It wasn’t buttercream, it was just butter. Also the cake itself was hard. When you bake a cake, you’re supposed to trim off the top, bottom and sides (that were on the outside of the baking pan; so you’re only left with soft cake from the inside) then add icing. They either don’t do that here and all their cakes are hard or they just forgot to do mine.

i’m biased because I love all things sugary and sweet. I go to school up the street and literally just walking in here is like walking into paradise. (Also because tey have student discounts as well as a buy one get one free on the cupcakes once a week on Wednesdays)
The HUGE HUGE brownie and the Cocunut Macrooons are my FAVORITE in words. Seriously, I put atleast 6 people on to La Cakerie just by pulling out my HUGE brownie in class. Literally the brownie is meal in it of it self.
I didn’t give it 5 stars because it still is kind of pricey to be honest. Is it comfort food yes? Does it taste great? Yes! Is it worth the $ 4.50 that I pay for a pack of three macaroons. I’m not sure the answer is yes.

My beloved had a birthday coming up and I wanted to get the tastiest cupcakes in town. After reviewing a few bakeries in town, I decided to go with La Cakerie. I visited and the woman there was friendly and so very patient and thorough in providing me with all of the necessary information for weighing my decision. At first, I had a bit of sticker shock (I’m used to grocery store cupcakes… What can I say?), but these were so worth the cost. I loved the variety of flavors — from those that are available pretty much any day to the bakers choice flavors. Neither the cake nor the frosting were overly sweet. Some of the cupcakes were a bit on the dry side or maybe just heavy for me (blueberry cheesecake?) but most were moist and flavorful. I had a lot of expectations of the Chocolate Merlot and while good, it didn’t wow me like the one with chocolate granache did. Overall, these were really tasty and worth the price. Everyone at the birthday party loved them! My mom commented on the real carrots in the Carrot Cake cupcakes.
And, since I now live in the neighborhood, I’ll stop by from time to time for a sweet treat to myself!

This was my first time ordering from this bakery. Amy was so excellent we actually ordered a speciality cake over the telephone and the results were amazing. Amy made a few suggestions to make this birthday cake a cake to remember. I wanted to give him a birthday cake different fro the traditional birthday cake. LaCakerie the price was truly a SWEET deal.

We stubble upon this place walking by and my daughter loves cupcakes so we had to try and they were fantastic moist and full of flavor. We actually went twice on our week long trip to baltimore. Prices were good too.

Nothing has changed from my last review except to add that I had their vegan vanilla cupcake and it was great! I’ve tried other vegan desserts from other places and they were less then desirable. But this one definitely aimed to please!

Workers were very friendly and sweet but that’s about it… Vegan cupcakes are horrendous! I tried all the vegan available flavors on two separate occasions (since it could have been just a certain batch or off day in the kitchen) and each one was dry tasteless and the icing was the worst I have ever had. tasted like I was eating straight vegetable shortening. My friend and I couldn’t even finish one. stay clear vegan friends

Pros:
–Great location. Finishing off lunch with a sweet cupcake always makes the day better!
–Service: Everyone who has ever helped me here has been polite, incredibly helpful, and really excited to talk about cupcakes.
–Variety: They have so many different types of cupcakes from the usual (chocolate, red velvet, sprinkled vanilla) to the unique (pb&j, strawberry banana, etc.) They also have other baked goods that aren’t cupcakes like muffins and donuts– I saw a glazed donut with bacon on it!
–Price: One cupcake is around $ 2.50, but they also have great deals with 6 cupcakes for $ 10 and I think they also have a student discount on certain days.
–Décor: Really bright, happy atmosphere with lots of pink! It instantly puts you in a good mood.
Cons:
–The actual cake part: Really inconsistent. I’ve probably tried about 10 different cupcakes from here and I’ve had mixed results. Some of the cupcakes are SO DRY. I actually got one that was really dry and crumbly on the outside, but for some reason was incredibly moist and delicious on the inside. If only the whole cupcake was that good?
–The frosting: I usually adore frosting and I’m one of those people who can eat frosting right out the jar. But the frosting here is really strange– It’s not sweet, the texture is really oily and slimy, and the combination of this flavorless/​slick frosting with the dry cake part is just not enjoyable.
–Some of the flavors: I’ve had the red velvet, which was great and predictably delicious. But I also tried the piña colada, which is only delicious if you like artificially fake fruit flavor. I’m going to admit that I had no idea what to expect, so maybe it was my fault for ordering that one. There were coconut flakes in the doughnut, which added a crunchy texture.
Overall– I may give la cakerie another chance… but on the bright side, maybe this is better for my figure that I’m not obsessed with eating here every day!

Came here recently for some St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes.
They had an awesome assortment.
The cupcake with the Bailey’s was by far my fave of the day!
The cupcakes were moist, delicious and had an awesome amount of icing. You know the cupcake to icing ratio is way off sometimes.
If you’re ever in the Mt. Vernon area you should give them a try.
Doesn’t hurt that the pastry chef was on Cupcake Wars!

I always passed by this place when I’m going to Starbucks or Chipotle so I decided to give it a try. I bought half a dozen cupcakes to bring back to the office and OMG… they were HORRIBLE. They do in fact weigh a lot, but that’s probably due to the crisco/​heavy butter (you can taste it) they used. The red velvet cupcake had a whip frosting instead of the traditional cream cheese frosting. They tasted like day old store bought cupcakes, heck I’ve gotten better cupcakes at Shoppers. Totally not a fan, won’t be going back. Customer service was great though, but not those darn cupcakes.

Grabbed two cupcakes for $ 5 total from their food truck by the ice skating rink in the inner harbor. I love seeing food trucks in locations like this!
The owners were friendly and the cupcakes (black bottom and peanut butter) were very good, typical of many specialty cupcake shops.
If you’re in the area at the same time as the truck, grab a treat and sit out on a bench by the harbor. Even in December it was quite enjoyable:)

Had a cake made for my daughter’s second birthday. I brought in an example of a gorgeous, elaborate, themed fondant cake and what I got was EVEN BETTER! The price was more than competitive for the level of detail. Would most certainly use them again.

Today’s carrot cake cupcake makes me update my previous review. I really enjoyed the cupcake which was rich, carroty, and had just the right amount of sugar. The frosting was great too. However, I tried my friend’s funfetti cupcake which didn’t taste like real funfetti at all. It was dry and flavorless. So 5 stars for my cupcake and 3 for my friend’s.

Happened to see this place while walking around and decided I had to try it out!
I was lucky to come on a day where they had the student discount! I believe it’s Tuesdays and they’re extending it to Wednesday as well. I was only expecting to get one cupcake but when I realized I could get TWO, I was overjoyed :).
I ended up getting the Cinnamon Strudel and Cookie Dough cupcakes. Both were amazing! The frosting was super light and the base dense. The cookie dough frosting was flavored like coffee though so that was a bit surprising as I thought it would be. cookie dough flavored.
Overall I would definitely come back to take advantage of the student discount! These are incredibly cheap and taste amazing.

A friend of mine lives in the building right next to this place — and seems to always take forever to come down and let me in. On this particular day, La Cakerie was calling my name. I think the pastry chef who does the baking does it in Towson and opened the bakery when he won cup cake wars. IMG_​2213 I am not exactly sure how or when he joined forces with this Mount Vernon Shop.
I got this lonely little chocolate chip cookie dough cupcake to go. I asked the helpful clerk about it — it’s a vanilla cake with no egg in the batter, that is stuffed with uncooked cookie dough, and topped with cookie dough icing and a nugget of cookie. Fantastic. I liked the texture of the vanilla cake — I can’t bring myself to use that m-​word… It was quite flavorful and was like combining chocolate chip cookies with ice cream and cake. Hooray!!! I could take or leave that dry crumbly — certainly not fresh-​baked cooked on top — but I’d be up for trying one of there 12 – 15 flavors.
I’m not sure how I feel about this little shop. I was thinking when I went in it would smell like freshly baked cupcakes. You know, that sweet smell of sugar and butter melting and caramelizing. But, alas… This place had a cold and uninviting feel. I’ll try a few more cupcakes, but I certainly won’t spend much time in the café…

I came here just from passing by the other day. The set up inside was just what I had imagined a cupcake place would be, a very cute chic environment for a girls date. I ordered a cotton candy cupcake to-​go, which looked delicious at the time. At the cash register they had a display of ‘diablo doughnuts’ which looked good. I made a comment ‘Oh fruity pebbles that sounds delicious’ and the man behind the counter shook his head no! he then pointed out ‘the only two good ones’ I was so shocked he didn’t have confidence in his own product!
Any way I finally got home to eat my cup cake I had been craving for the past hour, and it was stale and tasteless! I do believe it was the first cupcake in my life that I could not even eat half of! Very sad by my experience to such a chic store!

An updated update: Since my last update I’ve gone to La Cakerie six times. The first time I was able to get a vegan cupcake, and the following five times I was told by the staff that they «weren’t delivered.» Thus, I’ll have to look at this as an effort at first of the establishment to react to feedback but not keeping up with it. I hear «weren’t delivered» as «they weren’t made,» as the main location from where they get delivered doesn’t carry them either.
I’ll update my first score (¹⁄₅) to a ²⁄₅. The vegan cupcakes are good, but they never have them (or at least ¹⁄₆^th of the time they do).

Oooh so sweet and the Cakerie are 2 bakeries separated by only a few blocks, so I decided to treat myself and try both.
The Cakerie had friendly and helpful service when I walked in. Their cupcakes are a bit more expensive at over $ 2.50 each but they definitely make up in size and quality. The cake was very good and moist and basically tasted like a glorified chocolate box cake mix (which is not necessarily a bad thing… but not unique at all). The icing was where it really shined, not too sugary, not grainy, nice and creamy and had the perfect peanut butter flavor. They also offer other baked goods and their soft pretzel is fabulous (simple and salted, not buttery and overwhelming). For Baltimore this cupcake is solid but it would not fare well in DC, Chicago, or NYC.
Oooh so sweet was a different experience. The service was not friendly and seemingly intentionally unhelpful. When I asked what the most popular flavor was, the response was «all of them.» I had to order multiple times bc the cashier (in her own words) was «not paying attention.» The cupcakes are a good price here and get cheaper as you go, 2/​$ 5, 4/​$ 9, etc. They also offer mini cupcakes but you had to order them in advance. I liked the idea of the Sin cupcake (red velvet marble with vanilla frosting and chocolate chips) but it had an overpowering almond flavor and the frosting was bland sugar. The pb choc cupcake was dry and almost tasted strongy of almonds. The frosting here was also pure sugar and just not creamy at all.
Overall I would possibly return to Cakerie but not Oooh so sweet. The cupcake search continues!
