E-ZPass Maryland

I closed my account the beginning of march but it took them 30 days from the time I asked to close the account to close it. Then when I called about my refund they stayed since I had the commuter plan that I still was charged for not using the time between requesting my account to be closed. They really know how to get over on people.

So, my family and I went on a summer vacation to Maine from DC. In preparation, I thought it would be smart to purchase and install an EZPass so we could avoid paying cash in the extensive, punitive, toll system up the East Coast. Man, was that a bad decision. So let me tell you my nightmare story we are still living in December! I signed up using their website. I thought I was clicking all the right buttons. So, they sent me my transponders and we head up the coast. After several EZPass toll booths in Maryland, Delaware, NJ and New York, we were unable to pass through an EZPass lane in NY, and a police officer told us that our Maryland EZPass was not accepted. After many attempts to rectify the issue «during our vacation», we were told two different things. First, our transponder must be malfunctioning and, I choose the wrong plan. What?! Now, I am paying and fighting toll fines in everyone of these states. Total expensive nightmare! Every time I have reached out to customer service they act and sound like Zombies. So, in hindsight, I will never purchase an EZPass and will always have plenty of cash on board. Come to think about it, I’ll just stay away from driving in the first place! Most importantly, avoid Maryland EZPass at all cost! Because it will cost you not just tons of money but poor mental health. The couple of extra seconds in «cash only’ toll lines could save you a huge ongoing headache like mine.

Horrible service and much of crocks. They are charging me full price even Though I have commuter plan. When it’s time to ask for my money back they are giving me the ran around

Wow… Try closing out your account with this circus. They make the process so convoluted so they can continue to charge you while your account is inactive. Then they claim that you can see your last bill AFTER you pay them the remaining balance?! Unbelievable.
Here is the predicament:
1) They do not prorate unused portions of plans. If you are 1 day over… you pay for the whole period.
2) It takes 30+ days to close an account
While the account is closing:
1) During this 30+ days, they are charging you for a plan you are not using
2) You cannot see your activity or what they are charging you via the website
3) You don’t get emailed statements anymore
4) You don’t even know you have a balance
Had we not called them, we would have had a negative balance and not known. After 18 months they just turn you over to collections.
This is a pure monopoly in the north east so where is the incentive to have good customer service and change shady practices? There is none!

I signed up for E-​ZPass myself finally in Maryland. After paying a $ 9 fee for the transponder, I learned there was another $ 1.50 a month «maintenance fee.»
Then they wanted your credit card to take out payments if the account balance gets below $ 10. You are not given the option to make one-​time credit card payments yourself unless you want to register in person at an MVA office. Good luck with that — that’s a waste of half a day. And I’ve heard you have to pay still ANOTHER damn deposit/​fee for such a privilege.
I read on some other sites of some horror stories of EZPass taking out as much money from your credit card s they deem fit and people not being able to get money back after they try to close the account. Some can’t even
close the account. One user received a bill of more than $ 1,000 with most claiming to be late fees for a toll she supposedly did not pay for.
This seems like a system ripe for fraud. Governments already take enough of our money — they are collecting tolls on highways and infrastructure that taxpayers have already paid for at least partly in most cases.
Like speed and redlight cameras that are installed for government revenue, not public safety, this is one more way for governments to cash in at all of our expenses.
Call it the Not So E-​ZPass.
