We are a church community in the church of Baltimore, reflecting the inclusive love of God. Emboldened by the good news of Jesus Christ, we strive to be a loving, welcoming, serving community of faith. Young and old, rich and poor, male and female, gay and straight — all are welcomed into this household of faith to share in Christ’s ministry of peace, love, and justice for all people.
History
Established in 1870.
Brown Memorial Presbyterian Church, located in Baltimore’s historic Bolton Hill neighborhood, was dedicated on December 4, 1870. Construction had been funded by a gift from Isabella McLanahan Brown, who wished to honor her late husband, George Brown. Mr. Brown, son of investment firm founder Alexander Brown, was a businessman and civic leader who «regarded religion as preeminent above all other things and loved his church with all the ardor of his noble nature.»
Throughout its history Brown Memorial has demonstrated a deep commitment to the people of Baltimore City through the development of civic leaders, participation in the Civil Rights Movement, and leadership in BUILD — one of the oldest and strongest broad-based, citizens’ power organizations in the country. Our music ministry has a long and distinguished history and continues today with expansions into world music that reflect the congregation’s growing diversity.
