A To Z Movers

This company moved my daughter from her apartment to my basement. When I returned home from church, they were stuck in my backyard, their truck tires were spinning in the mud and they had taken the concrete slabs that were under my down spouts and my Bering Ora down spots as their own. They refused to let me talk with the owner, they took no accountability or initiative to rectify the situation. My neighbor suffered damage to his yard. They had no plan and no support from their management team. When they were finally pulled from my backyard, they sped away like the guilty party they are. The back gate was still opened in their truck and they left all the trash outside. I am now $ 350 in debt and I have no idea what my gardener is going to charge me to fix my neighbor’s yard. I am extremely outraged. Poor customer service, poor professionalism, poor quality of work.

A-​Z was great from the start. I emailed with Brent back and forth to get an initial quote, confirmed the move, sent him a few updated inventory lists before the day. He was always responsive and personable. Gave us our first choice for date/​time.
We moved a 1 bedroom in 3 floor walk-​up in DC, plus had an additional stop at a townhouse in Catonsville, MD all dropping off at new place in Baltimore. I thought it may be complicated or be a very long day, but it wasn’t!
A-​Z called within an hour of their arrival time with an ETA, showed up on time with a huge truck with 4 guys. The main guy (can’t remember his name!) reviewed the paperwork, looked through my apartment and then they got started. They were out of there within 1 hour… and it was HOT that day. As soon as they finished, they made great time from DC to Catonsville and were at the next place less than 15 minutes. After arriving at the final stop, they took about an hour and a half and were out of there.
Negatives: 1) our fairly expensive bedroom set was scratched. We had wrapped it ourselves but it must have been next to something that scratched it. Scratches are not deep, it likely happened in the truck, and was not necessarily their fault. We should have wrapped it differently and warned them that was our most valuable possession. It’s not very noticeable and can be fixed. 2) they had a deal or discount on their website and when I tried to ask Brent about it he said that they were not doing that deal anymore and it just hasn’t been taken off their website. I feel as though they should have given it to me because the website did not have an expiration date… so they need a better IT person :)
All in all, I highly recommend them. Responsive management, hard-​working and friendly workers, one of the least expensive places we checked. I know they say you get what you pay for… but we paid less than most other companies in the area and we got way more than expected.

They were early. They were fast. Those are the only 2 good things I can say. They complained the whole time. They wouldn’t take anything unless it was in a box. They broke my desk, AND they left a painting of mine laying by the trash area (I discovered this hours later as a neighbor almost claimed it for their own!). I will not use this service ever again.

This company was able to give me a quote based on the amount of stuff I had to move rather than by the hour, mile, etc. that a lot of other companies do which I really liked. I moved from a second-​floor apartment in a house to a row home. I had a few phone conversations leading up to the move with someone in the office to adjust my quote as I was packing and realizing how much I had since they said it would cost more the day of the move if there was found to be more inventory than they estimated. Fine, done. I was scheduled for an afternoon move on a Saturday — not my first choice, I prefer mornings, but I wasn’t in a hurry so it was fine. I was surprised I didn’t get a confirmation call the day before, however, I guess I didn’t need it; it would have been nice to allay my paranoia of no one showing up (that’s just me with moves), that’s all.
I got a call from the person who would be supervising the move around 10 in the morning to let me know that they were running late and he would call again to give me a better estimate of arrival time. He called again a couple hours later and informed me that it may be around 4 until they got to me (4 hours late). Again, I was in no hurry so it wasn’t a big deal and I appreciated them keeping in close contact with me to keep me updated. He did inform me that since they were so late, they had collected more guys and that 8 would show up for the move at no extra charge — great, that should cut my move in and out to about 15 mins! Fine with me! They called to say that they were on their way and about an hour and a half later they showed up — I was informed traffic was an issue because they had quite a caravan going with all of the extra people. No problem.
The guys showed up and after a little bit of confusion (I assume they aren’t used to working with so many guys at once), they got moving. Everything went fine except they did knock over a statue on my landlady’s porch causing it to break (it should have been moved but I didn’t even think about it) — the supervisor offered to pay to replace/​repair if needed. They swiftly got everything on to the truck and we were off.
When we got to my new house, things went similarly, no real issues. They also helped me assemble my bed and dresser mirror at no charge which was very nice of them. The supervisor wound up giving me a small discount due to being so late which wasn’t expected but appreciated. All the guys were very polite and a couple even helped me carry a few last things to my car that were not included in the «move». They were good with my dog as well (she was supervising). I would hire them again if I had to move.

I wasn’t completely thrilled with A to Z Movers. I had originally contacted them on the recommendation of a coworker. We were moving from one apartment to another not even a mile away, with a stop to a storage unit (which was on the way) in between. The guys who showed up were respectful and competent and had us all packed up and moved in in no time, and were very understanding about our little detour to the storage facility, but when it came time to pay, they charged us an extra 60% than the original quote. Instead of it being a $ 500 expenditure to go from one apartment to another, it ended up costing us over $ 800. And when I asked why the increase in price? «Distance they have to walk, and dealing with an elevator» was the answer. The apartment we were moving from was apparently too far away from the complex’s door, which meant an extra $ 300. Plus an elevator ride??? Who do we think they are, he-​men!!!
I am not even upset about the increased cost – it’s their business, and I agree that while the elevator makes it inconvenient, it’s also pretty damn common. What bothers me was the inconsistency. When the person who had answered the phone asked what the distance was to the door, I gave him an exact number (in terms of steps – even making him wait while I counted them off), to which he said, «No problem.» They couldn’t have had a clearer message if I had drawn them a map. No, what I really think happened was a little back-​door dealing. They had known I was going to pay cash (you get a 5% discount that way – shady, but when you’re strapped for cash like my husband and I were, worth it), and decided to fleece us a little. When I told them that’s what I thought they were doing, they basically shrugged and said, «We could leave…» We needed to be out of the apartment. We really didn’t have a choice but to pay them.
Moral of the story: get a paper trail, and make damn sure you have a clear, signed contract with the movers before they even start the process. But the next time my husband and I move, we’ll be trying another company. I hear good things about Bill’s Movers.

I’ve never had a particularly bad experience with a moving company before, but I had never had a great one either until I hired A to Z. These guys showed up more than an hour late, apparently because of traffic, but made up for it when they got to my apartment in the midtown area of the city. I hired them on the back end of a move from Milwaukee to unload my truck. They not only unloaded the truck efficiently, but they did it with an enthusiasm I had never seen in a moving crew before. They went out of their way to help beyond just putting things in the right places. For instance, when one of them noticed nails had come loose in a piece of furniture, he asked for a hammer and fixed it. They also made (pretty good) recommendations about where to put things based on space in the apartment and furniture that still had yet to be brought in. And these guys were unbelievably friendly. At the risk of sounding like an owner or employee, which I’m not, this is one of the best customer service experiences I’ve had in years. Highly recommend them.
