A People United

I loved my visit to this store. There was a lot of decently-​priced jewelry (plus 20% off!) and a good selection of beautiful clothing. The man helping me suggested a shirt he thought I would like, and I ended up buying it. Definitely a fun and unique store that supports a good cause.

Had some great clothes for $ 20 and less for the upscale hippie in you. Clearance blow out when I stopped in. 20% off accessories and jewelry. I really should go back. Liked the international fair trade vibe of the store. I was especially thrilled cause my stopping in was completely serendipitous and that always makes things seem magical.

A seriously fantastic find in Baltimore! A great shop with a wide variety of awesomeness from around the world and super friendly atmosphere.

I feel like I just had a really pleasant experience at A People United, which is noteworthy since I really dislike shopping and salespeople. The place looks intriguing from the outside and I’ve been wanting to stop in for awhile, but a lot of times the salespeople in specialized or boutique-​type shops can be either overbearing, or dismissive of the dilettante (I’m looking at you, clock repair guy on Read St.).
I read on Unilocal that they sell tea, so I finally had an excuse to go in. It is actually much larger than it looks on the outside, so you aren’t cramped. The salesperson was very friendly and helpful, but not pushy or obnoxious. He was very knowledgeable about the teas and made some great suggestions. He also offered to box my purchases and offered gift wrap and bows.
They are mainly a gift and clothing store, so I was surprised they sell tea and probably wouldn’t think to look there otherwise. Most of the items are from Southeast Asia. They have great clothes and accessories, some home goods and gifts, and an impressive array of beautiful furniture in the basement, including carved wood and pietra dura mediums (not something you see very often). The furniture is high quality, and also very expensive.
They are having a 20% off sale through the end of January. I bought many teas, and some wonderful wool Nepalese gloves for $ 14. The jewelry is fantastic. I have a weakness for earrings and I wanted to buy like 10 pairs, but managed to stop myself. I will absolutely return for tea and gifts.

Fair trade wares and amazingness from all over the world. Terry and Allison were super nice and not over bearing. Will be back!

Great store full of ethnic treasures! My fave section is the extraordinary selection of silk curtains. I recently purchased a set of iridescent, sheer pink/​magenta tab-​top curtains which I hung in front of the venetian blinds in my bedroom and now I can walk around during the day with the blinds open and not be too concerned about preserving modesty or offending the neighbors ;)

I totally missed out on the furniture downstairs :-(They should really tell you when you walk in the door. Or have a big sign pointing to downstairs. I didn’t even see the stairs. That’s what I get for not reading the Unilocal reviews ahead of time. I’ll just have to go back.
They did tell me about all the sales going on right now — jewelry, clothes and even the new stuff up front. I love the comfy flowing clothes but wish they came in smaller sizes. There is a large selection of jewelry and household stuff that I just don’t need but love.

Yo this store is super cool, and honestly the furniture downstairs is a gold mine and you could almost miss it by not even knowing it exists. Luckily I have my Unilocalers that always let me know things like this.

I went to People United a month or two ago for a quick peep in and out. I loved what I saw and made a couple purchases (see previous review), but I didn’t have time to go downstairs and check out the furniture. Apparently that was a no-​no because everyone I spoke with on Unilocal afterwards told me I was completely missing out.
Sooo… I went back. WHOA: The pieces truly did blow my mind. I literally oohed an «oh my goodness» as I walked down the rickety stairs to the basement. How did I miss this? There was a whole section of Tibetian furniture with intricate painted wooden carvings, as well as everything from light fixtures to drawers, armoires, cabinets, and chests. The end tables and coffee tables were beautiful and great splashes of color for a special room that needs it. Because of the designs, I could see them working in the most wild or conservative of rooms.
The prices were high though, I will say that. It’s one thing to be fair trade and another to be off the freaking meter. Still, everything was very nice and if I had the dough I might have considered the $ 2500 Tibetian wood craving bed that I saw, but something told me a good olé American-​made bed for cheaper would be my route ;)
I will be back to pick up the accents, perhaps a couple of nightstands. I just can’t help myself. Everything is just so lovely!

Beautiful and high-​quality selection of clothes and home goods, hand crafted in Nepal and India. Fair trade biz that supports local schools in Nepal. The owners are friendly as well. I bought my favorite winter hat here years ago; still going strong. It is a 100% hand-​knit wool hat, with soft fleece lining.

I just moved into a new apartment so I have a bit of furnishing to do, and I decided to pop into People United it see what it had to offer. It has a nice collection of global wares but focuses mostly on Indo-​Asian artifacts. When I went in I told the woman behind the register that I was looking for a bowl or tray for my coffee table and she mentioned that all the copper on this one table was 50% off and that there was a furniture gallery downstairs. I poked around for a little while but eventually found exactly what I was looking for on the 50% off table – a very pretty hand worked copper tray. I brought it to the register and the clerk (not the one who had helped me earlier) tried to charge me full price. This is store can be very expensive and this tray at full price was $ 64.00. When I told her I got it from the sale table she sighed heavily and said that it shouldn’t be there but that she would give me the discount anyway. I am glad that she did give me the discount, but it wasn’t my fault that the tray (along with four others just like it) had ended up on the table and I wasn’t trying to dupe them. Oh well. I still like the store and I did get the tray (which came with a description of the artist and his story).
