History

Established in 1985.

Built in 1985 as a country inn, The Ballard Inn & Restaurant is set in the historic township of Ballard, centrally located in the heart of Santa Barbara County’s noted wine country. Just 35 minutes north of Santa Barbara, and just a few minutes drive from the larger towns of the Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang, Santa Ynez, and Los Olivos. Ballard was founded in 1880, named for the proprietor of an original Wells Fargo stage coach station, and remains a very small town, with a population of under 1000. Just a short walk from the Inn, Ballard’s Little Red School House, built in 1882, is still in operation today.

The Kazali Family purchased The Ballard Inn & Restaurant in 2004. Chef Budi Kazali opened The Restaurant at The Ballard Inn at that time, gaining much respect and notoriety both locally as well as nationally. His cuisine has been featured in publications including Food and Wine, The Wine Spectator, and Central Coast Magazine.

Budi K.

Business Owner

A graduate of California Culinary Academy, Chef Kazali began his career in San Francisco at the renowned Campton Place and then La Folie. Expanding his repertoire, Chef Kazali departed San Francisco and joined the staff of Ambrosia on Huntington Restaurant, in Boston, as sous chef. In 1997, Chef Kazali was invited by the internationally acclaimed Chef Ming Tsai to assist in opening the now James Beard Award-winning restaurant, Blue Ginger. In 2001, Chef Kazali returned to San Francisco, where he delighted the clientele of Gary Danko’s, MC2, and then Ozumo with his unique fusion cuisine. Longing for the quiet mountains and the sweet sea breezes of the Pacific, Chef Kazali returned to his native Santa Barbara. At the Ballard Inn Restaurant, he looks forward to sharing his unique and globally inspired approach to cooking with the Santa Ynez wine country community. He is particularly inspired by the variety of local wines, many of which pair so beautifully with Pacific Rim cuisine.
