In-Shape: Bakersfield Coffee Road

I have been a member for 2 years and swim laps four times a week and enjoy the pool. recently a speaker has been installed and now very loud music is playing at the indoor pool where music never was before. not having music at the indoor pool was something that was a great enhancement to my work out bi don’t want to listen to the music at the gym. and lap swimming– I cannot have my own ear phones on you know– I asked Josh the manager. he informed me that corporate is forcing them to play the music at the indoor pool and at the level of loudness as well. the music at the indoor pool is louder than the lobby louder than the dressing room. josh told me he would have to talk to corporate. I said I would call Corp as well. never got a live person. left messages. never got a call back. and this was mid week. this is not the first time I have not had return calls from Corp. also the pool heater has not been working properly. and 3 out of 4 lap swims in the last 7 days the pool was very cold. I don’t mind if I am lap swimming but I know a unheated indoor poi when I am swimming in it. the girl at he desk today told me that only the manager can change the settings I. the pool soo until he comes in during the week — ooo well. she also mentioned I should post here on Unilocal since I can’t get Corp on the phone. and you know I see that Corp does respond to people here. gee that’s real swell. why don’t you peole return phone calls — why don’t you take care of business? why don’t you properly train the people you have working in these facilities instead of giving them scripts to read off to people– scripts about functions and protocol that these people know absolutely mothing about? UPDATE– Emily who’s email is posted here on Unilocal has already returned my mail and has sent info to management. also, I just spoke to Tom the new manager at coffee road. he is very knowledgeable and willing to address my concerns. this manager is the first person to ever return my phone call from inshape in the two years I have been a member. thanks Tom. you have restored confidence in my membership renewal concerns.

Wanted to add a child, they told me I had to cancel and join again, two months later I realized they never canceled so I was paying for two memberships. I was directed to call corporate who told me «lots of people carrying two memberships for connivence» WTF? Never did rebate the redundancy charges

The gyms are super nice — clean, good cardio equipment, lots of weights, pool is nice, classes are good… But…
I have been a member for about 6 years. Recently, two new gyms opened in my area and my workout buddies have access to those gyms. So I figured I’d upgrade too. So for a $ 49 processing fee and dropping two kids off my plan, I can keep paying $ 85.99 to have access to the gyms. That’s way too much for someone like me who uses the gym two or three times a month. As of February 20^th, I’ll be gym-​less. I think what really slayed me was the processing fee. $ 49 to have someone type in, can access all gyms. Thanks but no thanks.

I’ve been a member since 2007 and am now considering cancelling my membership. My wife and I joined together and in 2010, my wife was diagnosed with a serious illness. I spoke to the General Manager about this and he let my wife cancel her part of the membership. He told us that he would add my wife back on for «The same price when she is ready.» He also told me that he would put notes on my account so that there would not be any issues. Well, my wife wants to go back now and of course, there are NO NOTES on my account. Either they were never added, or they were somehow deleted. Now, they want to charge my wife almost double what I pay per month. They told me there was nothing they could do and I needed to call corporate. I did, and got the same answer. Waste of time. I’ve read similar reviews on Consumer Affairs about dishonest business practices.
Overall, I’m not happy about how they handled this and their dishonesty.
My advice to everyone who is considering this gym, get everything in WRITING UP FRONT. Promises are empty here.

***OKAY, update on my situation. Emily from the corporate office contacted me and resolved my membership issues. She contacted me the day after I wrote this review and she was extremely nice. I appreciated how she showed a genuine concern for me and my issues and she resolved everything the same day. I wish I could have dealt with her sooner. I am changing my rating to a 4. The only reason why I’m not saying a 5 is due to the runaround I had to do to get to this solution. However, I am happy with the end result. Thank you Emily! You’re awesome!

Signed up for a membership because they said they’d buy me out of my Bx membership. They charged me $ 39 when signing then told me I would just pay my Bx membership until it’s up and Inshape won’t charge me for the remainder time … I checked my bank and got charged $ 42!!! From Inshape!!! Not happy at all

Horrible customer service… The salesperson got my wife signed up for membership when my wife found out she got ripped off. She canceled her membership and they said it would take 4 weeks to get the money refunded back to her account. The money did not come to her account and she has been waiting for her refund for more then a month. The salesperson and headquarters did not apologize to my wife.

I’ve been coming to this location on the weekends at 600 am, I’ve been to the white lane and California Ave locations, the desk clerks are nice there, but at the coffee location there is a desk clerk named Andrea who is extra nice and makes checking in a more pleasant experience. She has very good customer service skills. And I used to have my own business in LA for 5 years and customer service is top priority for referrals. Great job Andrea, keep up the good work!

For not having been in a gym for about 5 years InShape was a great recommendation a friend of mine had. This facility has everything you need in a gym. Inshape on Coffee Road is a super clean facility with any type of workout regiment you can think of. From classes to personal training sessions I am motivated every time I go.
They have two pools (the inside pool is heated year round) they have two racket ball courts, spin classes, free weights, a millions machines to choose from, a womans ONLY spot to work out and a great motivating personal training staff.
A great addition to this InShape facility is the smoothie bar which also include a lot of additional things they offer, before or after a work out.
So if your in the Rosedale area or withing running/​biking distance this facility is a great addition to your goals that you know need to be set. I have set some high goals and will be working on them as hard as I can.

My family has truly enjoyed our membership at this location! The facility is large with wide open layout, clean, offers a variety of equipment and SO many activities for each of us to be involved with.
My favorite aspect of having joined this gym has got to be working with my personal trainer! From initial interview by Josh N., to being paired up with Personal Trainer Shane H. I have set goals, with their help, and been encouraged to meet them. Shane really pays attention to the details of my workouts and explains rationale for why we’re doing what we’re doing… every step of the way! I’m already seeing results and can honestly say I’m being taught habits that I can continue when my sessions are complete.

Awesome facility with wonderful classes /​instructors. If you are looking for a gym that motivates you, this is the place. They have steam room, sauna, indoor & outdoor pool, personal trainer service and a good revive station. If your muscles get sore they have massage service available.

It’s all fun and games Unilocaling for places to eat until you notice the weight you have gained from it, lol! I used to go to body exchange, but I switched over because I like the vibe more at this place. By far it’s bigger, plenty of machines and weights, they have a huge selection of cardio machines, staff are always friendly, place is clean, and it is in a great location. Time to stop typing and time to start sweating…

What’s nice about this location is that it is big, however the downfall is that it is busy a big majority of the time. There are plenty of cardio machines available to use. When it isn’t as busy it is great having that extra space. This location has a juice bar which is fantastic if you don’t have time to eat something after a workout.

Really like that this particular location has an indoor swimming pool, since you may NOT want to swim outdoors in the hot hot hot Bakersfield summer heat. :)

I signed up for a personal trainer. I had a great first day with him but then he didn’t call to schedule with me the next week. He sent me a text the following week to then tell me he was leaving. It’s not my cup of tea to be switching trainers.

Had a great experience switching to this gym when I came to Bakersfield. It’s got everything you could want in a gym and I had an awesome membership counselor named Tommy show me everything there, all the equipment, and set me up with the best membership. Highly recommend asking for him and getting trained by Calvin, both gave a pleasurable experience.

So, I normally write reviews on restaurants because I’m a foodie. However, I do want to start sharing my experiences on other places I visit.
I originally didn’t have the best experience with In Shape the first time I had a membership about three years ago. I’m also a BX (Body Xchange) member for the last 6 years. I recently got a guest pass to In Shape and I will say that if In Shape had prices like BX, I would definitely be signing up.
This gym reminds me of LA Fitness. It’s pretty nice and you can tell people take care of the equipment. There are hardly any broken machines, broken weights, etc. The only thing I don’t like about these gyms is that they don’t have any basketball courts or areas for agility work. Body Xchange has those class areas with laminate and/​or hardwood floors where you can do plyos etc. They do; however, have tons of cardio machines. Almost twice as many treadmills as BX. They also have an indoor and outdoor pool.
In terms of the atmosphere, In Shape is more chill. People seem nice, but they seem a bit bougie. The atmosphere doesn’t really get me «pumped» to workout. This is definitely more of a female friendly gym, which I’m sure many guys would love.
All in all this is a decent gym. If I was willing to pay more, I would come here.

There’s always lots of cardio equipment. The strength training area is better than body change and slightly less crowded. Definitely less meat heads and bros than bx.
The wifi is ABSOLUTELY CRAP. It barely works or never works. Download your music and shows or prepare to listen to Britney Spears and whatever other horrible crap is on the stereo.

This gym has all the essentials and it’s clean! People are pretty good at Cleaning the equipment after using it. If you haven’t already, come and open a membership. You’ll get a free session with a personal trainer once you’re signed up. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. I didn’t know how to start the treadmill at first (total newbie), they were more than happy to help! There’s a spa inside the gym. I think you have to call and make an appointment first. There’s an offer on Unilocal right now, if you accept the deal, they offer a week for free. Deal ends the end of July. Why not? You get a week of experience for free! Don’t forget to try out their classes.
CLASSES: their classes vary depending on the location. In-​shape has multiple locations. I go to the one on Coffee. These are some of the classes on top of my head. If you’re interested, there’s an app you can download called in-​shape where you can see the full schedule. I typically do the yoga classes, and I find that this location offers the most yoga classes.
