Was pretty impressed with this place.
We stopped in to check out the dog and cat kennels for when we go away on our travels. Our vet at a different spot is great, but not for long time boarding. Too cagey. My pup needs interaction with other dogs of her size and this place delivers.
Not every place will let you just walk in and see everything in the back so I was pleased that we got the tour.
I left satisfied that the staff are very good with animals (and people), the facility is clean and that our pets would be happy here.
The dog kennels vary in size and have a large separate room for socialization. Some places just do not take the risk of putting the dogs together which could make for a long week for a busy dog that needs company.
The cat areas have 3 tiers and you can bring their toys with them at drop off so they have something familiar from home to play with. AND if you have 2 cats they can stay together in the same «apartment» with a discount on the 2^nd cat.
HOWEVER, this place is very pricey. We will sacrifice our budget and cut back elsewhere to pay for Fur and Feathers as I need to have peace of mind when I am away. I need my fur-​kids to be comfortable and content or I cannot have a good vacation.
As a bonus, on a Facebook page, staff will post pics of your pups every day that you are away if you ask them to, so you can see how they are doing. Not every place will do this either.
BONUS — there are a couple of house dogs at the front of the shop you cannot help but fall in love with — made the visit even better = this means you, LULU! xo

**Update — late Aug 2015 they had a kennel cough outbreak which limited the amount of dogs they could take, some had to be quarantined and doggie play time was cancelled. Ugh. just as we were about to bring our dog in for the week. We thought this unfortunate as we had to make alternate arrangements but at least they were honest about what was happening there. Kind of refreshing actually. Our 2 cats still came here for the week as kennel cough does not affect felines and we got them back happy after vaca and looking good. Not the usual, «Holy cow, look how fat my cat is!?» after a week. Will for sure use this kennel again.**

Simply amazing and they provided a wonderful dog to Neal and Christina Ryan by the name of Gibson.

I called to bring my puppy in, and was told they had kennel cough going around, so they weren’t taking anymore pets in for the day. I am happy that they were doing this for safety, but on the other hand, it terrifies me to think I would drop my pup off and for him to become sick. As well, I noticed that on Facebook that kennel cough notifications have gone on almost every month, so this isn’t an issue that happens on occasion.
I also felt that what they told me they offer during day care was not very beneficial to a dog, particularly a puppy. They schedule «nap times» if the dogs get tired, and I was also told if they start getting too excited, they will set them down for a «nap». Any dog parent would see that isn’t the proper way to handle excited energy, so I am glad I learned what I needed to before I took a chance and boarded or left my pup for day care.

My groomer retired. I came here due to good reviews. Even though my three fur babies received good cuts, they all were injured. They only told me about one nick in my puppies ear. My other dog nails had three clipped too short and were bleeding profusely. I then found a tick on her. My yard is always sprayed and cared for. I have never had any ticks or fleas on any of my fur babies. Then my older Momma dog who is super gentle was shaved too short and had bleeding areas. Never again will I take my babies there!

My huge, goofy Labs can be a bit hard to handle, especially now that they are older and don’t see or hear as well. One also has separation anxiety so it’s always nerve-​wracking when we take her to a new place. But the groomer said they did GREAT and I was soooo happy that they didn’t freak out! They looked beautiful and happy when I picked them up and I cannot recommend a better groomer or facility!

I reserve in advance because this place is popular. They have different size suites you can reserve. My 2 dogs, medium and small sized can share any size suite. They are close and never fight. I take their beds and blankets so they don’t get home sick. I know they don’t miss me when it’s playtime! They get a few breaks to play outside with other dogs their size. I give details about feeding times and any other special instructions and this place follows their regimen. I love love love the report cards they provide. They are written well with detail and are very thoughtful. Always describes my dogs perfectly.
This place has daycare and overnight stay available for dogs, cats and other animals. They also have two locations. I’ve only visited the location on Allen.
I drop my girls off and never worry about them because I know they are good hands. They also require vaccine records and I appreciate that.

Great place to have your pet boarded and cared for. The owners are pet lovers and care about your pet. They have employees who are pet people too. Both their Allen road location and new downtown location are clean and always kept up to date. They have great separated areas for your pet or pets in addition to the commons areas. Much nicer that most veterinary boarding facilities I have seen..

Never had a problem leaving my dog here for boarding or daycare. Friendly service and they know what they’re doing. I leave my dog here all the time for daycare and judging after my dog comes out he must have had a blast. Got rid of his energy there playing and became a tired dog at home (:

Boarding varies depending on the size of room and how many pets.
They also give you a stamp card which they stamp for every visit. Once the card is fully stamped they give you a free day!
Only place I’ll trust to leave my dog at.

This place is my savior! When I can’t find someone to petsit my pup, Fur and Feathers would come to the rescue. It’s bittersweet that everytime I drop my pup off, he’s eager to get rid of me and join the rest of his friends in the back. He doesn’t even care to look back at me haha. Means he loves it there. The one thing I love best is when I pick him up, all his puppy energy is drained. Whoo-​hoo! I didn’t give them full stars because my pup did catch the kennel cough here but a quick visit to the vet fixed it up. It’s bound to happen in kennels and parks.

I’ve never felt comfortable leaving my babies anywhere or with anyone, to the point where if I can’t bring my dogs on a trip, I cancel it. I was referred to Fur & Feathers by a family member who raved about how much his dog enjoyed his stays & plays. I’ve used them for boarding and daycare, and my babies always leave happy, and in just as great shape as they came in! I work with animals for a living as a groomer, and know the responsibilities of caring for someone’s loved pets… It’s not just about making sure they have food and water and giving a service. It’s about the experience for the pet. I know EACH time my girls visit the resort, they are being genuinely cared for. I love that all of the ladies tell me little things my dogs do throughout the day. All of the staff I have met are trustworthy, welcoming and I feel comfortable leaving my girls in their care. I live on the central coast and I WISH you had a facility here. The fact that my dogs are I’m bedrooms and not cages SEALED the deal for me! I recommend Fur & Feathers to all of my clients planning to visit Bakersfield, or travelers that are from Bakersfield.

We dropped off our pup at Fur & Feathers this past weekend for a 4-​day stay. We remembered a couple things this time around:
(1) don’t get the grooming
(2) relax and know that your dog is in good hands and good company
(3) only $ 26 for a room if your dog is small (per night)
(4) $ 10 extra for day care during the day you come back, especially if you pick up in the late afternoon
We were advised to check-​in our pup at the 2^nd building (it’s located directly behind the main building). We actually prefer this 2^nd building in the back, as it seemed quieter and less commotion. The grooming was done in this back building too; athough we didn’t get it this time around.
When we picked up our pup, he seemed less frazzled than the first time he was there at this pet hotel. The towels in his kennel were washed (yay!) and he looked quite alright. :) Phew. They also gave us a «report card» for how he behaved during his stay and I found that pretty creative and cool. We were more comfortable this 2^nd time around with having our pup stay at this pet hotel for the wknd…

I called Matt in the Grooming dept on a Monday. He fit me in for a Friday in the AM (perfect) and made me feel very comfortable with the appt. Friday rolls around and we are welcomed in. A little paperwork and she’s ready to rock. My girl (pomeranian) isn’t the sweetest but Matt said she did very well with everything (except with the hairs around her face where she attempted to nip at his clippers lol :)) Shaving my girl is a huge challenge but he did a truly wonderful job. Only complaint is that she seemed to have some dandruff afterward so I wished they could have put some oil on her skin or something… Otherwise, fabulous. Matt is such a sweetheart!

While I hated being away form my monkey-​dog (Gabby) for almost three months, I was comforted by the care and attention she received at F&F Mill Creek. Gabby is a bit of a diva when it comes to her attitude and an olympic vertical jumper when it comes to separation anxiety. Despite these two difficult character traits, F&F made sure to find ways to keep her occupied and out of trouble. Folks like Kristen, Dexter’s mom (sorry, I never got your name!), Alex, and Cassie are all really helpful are willing to answer all your questions concerning your dog’s stay — and I asked A LOT. And while, I have previously brought my family member here multiple times before, this last stay strengthens my trust and support for F&F. Cheers!

My parents, as well as my husband and I have been boarding our dogs here for YEARS (between our families we have 8 dogs!). I love the facility and that it doesn’t seem like a «dog prison», pound or a typical kennel. The rooms are like real mini-​bedrooms! They are careful to make sure your dog plays with other dogs that don’t conflict with their personality, size, ect. I know my dogs are well looked after, and I love the little report cards that come back with your doggies telling you who their new friends are, how they behaved and their over all feeling during their stay. We have been to both locations, but prefer the downtown one because it is closer to our home.
It is pricey however, and I do agree there should be discounts for over 3 nights of a stay or something to that effect, but I will still pay the amount, obviously, because it is worth it! This is the only reason I am giving it four stars, and not 5. Maybe it comes down to you get what you pay for, and you are paying good money for good care of your pets…
I am surprised to see anything less than four stars on here, to be honest. We love Sara and Pam and they all treat your doggies as their own with lots of love! And if you notice, they care deeply about the animals and their business, they respond kindly and professionally (not defensively) to everyone’s negative comments below! Okay, I changed it to a 5 star rating… the care they give the animals makes up for the price!

I had to update my review. This year we added a new puppy to our family. The first time we boarded her here she was fives months old. We picked up her and our other girl dog up after 3 days of boarding and we learned she was in heat. Okay, no big deal as it was going to happen at some point. After she finished being in heat we took her to our vet to get spayed. Well we learned at this point she had been knocked up. We quickly realized the only opportunity she had to procreate was while being boarded at Fur & Feathers. We understand stuff like this happens and we didn’t think it big enough a deal to call Fur & Feathers and complain but they should be watching the dogs more (especially if they are in heat). Now that our dog is spayed it’s not an issue anymore but the vet did mention this isn’t the first time she has seen this happen while a dog was boarded there. So just be aware that if your dog is not fixed then you should think twice before sending it here.

My husband and I, and our dog, love fur and feathers. Our dog stays there when we go on vacation (2 – 4 times a year) and also 1 – 2 times a week for doggie day care while we are at work. Our dog is VERY hyper. Every time I get her from fur and feathers, she is exhausted! To me, that’s a sure sign that she had fun playing with the other dogs. Our dog is always excited when she sees the fur and feathers building from the car window. The staff there always remember our dog and are awesome with her. The staff are always accommodating. Prices are great and they even give you a stamp card where you can earn a free daycare day. If you’re looking for someone to watch your fur baby, go here! Nothing but kudos to this place.

I bring my dogs here at least once a year. I chose them after a lengthy search of local boarding facilities. I ended up choosing them because the dogs are kept in rooms rather than cages and have play time where they can socialize and go outside. My only complaint is that the last time I took them there I asked for them to go ahead and trim their nails and express their glands. When I picked them up I asked to be sure it was done and the girl at the counter could not find any notes indicated it had been done. Two girls went to the back to get my dogs and walked them through the front office and outside to the grooming area which I presume was in the back of the facility, but not attached (not sure why it wouldn’t have been attached to make it safer and easier). What I did not care for was how they walked my dogs out near a busy street (Allen Rd) without their harnesses or leashes. My husband talked to someone and was told that it was their policy to have them on a leash, but clearly this did not happen. I also question their record keeping as they did not note that this had been done, nor did they keep notes on the fact that my dog has pins in her leg.
I will probably bring them back here again, just to keep them from being kept in a small cage, but will not want any grooming to be done as I am worried about them getting into traffic if they were to get away from the girls carrying them outside.

just got back from my four time of leaving my two dogs in the new facility downtown bakersfield. The staff and owners are experienced, kind, understanding, empathic with me when I call for updates, and generally know my dogs well enough to put them in particular groupings with other dogs at play to provide the optimal experience for each of them. They are particularly good with any finicky behaviors (and my dogs appear to have more than most) they may show. thanks for being such a great provider.

I took my 14 month old cavalier king charles spaniel in for a grooming today, March 1, 2013, and I got a call later this afternoon that while combing out a mat, his skin tore and he may need a vet to look at the injury. What???
Although the co-​owners, Pam and Sara paid for the vet clinic across the street to see him, get staples and antibiotics, (they have an open account there… hmmm), they did nothing to make up for the poor guys pain and crappy customer service!
Would I EVER return there now? Never! I have a partially goomed dog, with staples, medication and am in a worse situation than I started! PLUS NO OFFERS of any free groomings anywhere!
I have taken him to Petco a dozen times in the past, and was always told, if a mats big enough they shave it. Guess I have to go back to Petco, of all places, for a good SAFE grooming. No option here for ZERO stars, which is what they deserve. Who tears the skin of a cavalier puppy and thinks it’s all in the course of business???

Our beagle, Penny stays here often. It’s by our house so dropping her off before heading out of town is nice. The people are always friendly and really easy to deal with. Getting her stay booked has never been a problem, but it’s still wise to call in advance for busy holidays & weekends.
Overall the place is fantastic, and Penny is always tired out when she gets home. I know she can be a little noisy and needy but the people there don’t seem to mind. The only thing I would like to see here are webcams. After visiting my sister and seeing her pet resort in Wisconsin, I can say I was rather jealous. Not only did their resort have webcams, but there was also a 24 hour drop off/​pick up, and a daily photo email sent to the owners. Maybe in the future Fur & Feather’s could add these features too.
