Dewar’s Candy Shop

This is a post for three months ago that I never got around to til now… So this was our first time at this place my mother in law talked about how wonderful the candy chews where here so we wanted to take the kids for ice cream. Well we walked in and were ignored about 5 mins so we asked if we just seat ourselfs. We were told to wait because they had no tables available. So we went to the bathroom. When we came out we were seated only after I reminded the lady that we were waiting on a table. Well I work with animal rescue and happened to have a 3 week old infant puppy in my purse that was being bottle fed. I have always been able to take bottle Feds places since they do not shed yet usually aren’t considered a issue. However they did tell us the pup was not allowed. I understood so we proceeded to ask questions while beginning to get up out of the seats about if we could order to go and she was very rude and said yes but u have to get out! Wow I mean we were in the prosses I understand the regulations however no need for attitude and rudeness :-(anyways we picked up the water we had been offered since we waste drinking it and started to the door with our wonderful waitress who was very nice through the entire awkward moment. And the other lady who had been rude to us yelled across the store you can’t take our water cups outside! Okie dokie our waitress was with us not like we were going anywhere. Well after that we just decided she was having s bad day and was obviously raised differently than we were so we proceeded to order and sit out front to wait. Well we decided we wanted to buy some candy so two of us without the pup went back inside to buy some and since we had never been there before I asked questions about the candy. I was bluntly told there was a list of everything I needed to know somewhere that direction! As she pointed over her shoulder the other direction. Wow really bad customer service and a completely differ t girl this time. Being a business owner I told her that I was sorry that we were new and had never been there before do we didn’t understand where she wanted us to look or anything of the procedure and that I was sorry for bothering her but if she wouldn’t mind showing me and explaining. Well after she rolled her eyes she helped me but I really hope the owners of this cute little place realize what’s going on with half the staff there. Our waitress on the other had way awesome and made up for it all while apologizing for everyone else’s behavior. Good job girl I wish I had yur name u Desirve the pay of the other three girls who are costing this place business! Hopefully things get better there!

great ice cream in a lovely setting. I love their vanilla ice cream sundae with crushed almonds. the service here isn’t the best, which is why my rating is ⁴⁄₅ stars.

Love this old fashion style Ice Cream Parlor! The chews are out of this world good and I have no self control around them!!! Love the peppermint ice cream, and the shakes are enough for two people to share. The staff is friendly and service is good. The first time I came here I waited several minutes before I figured out you had to take a number which was a little frustrating so they really need to make that more visible. This place is always crowded so don’t be in a rush when you go! Top 10 Bakersfield spots!!!

Holy moly! Best taffy I have ever tasted! and I’m not a taffy person by any stretch of the imagination. These little beauts were floating around the office, I politely said sure I’ll have one then set it aside knowing it’s only taffy and I may not even get around to eating it. The next day I decided why not give it a shot. It was peanut butter and I don’t even like peanut butter. I slowly unwrapped it took a small bite and my mind was blown! This is taffy!!! and Peanut Butter Taffy at that. I immediately ventured out in hopes of getting my hand on another piece. Luckily I did, and an Almond flavor.
These little treats are SO delish! Not the sort of taffy that you worry a tooth may break on, soft pillowie treats literally filled with their flavors, versus flavored taffy. I’m so glad I didn’t turn this bad boy down when it was offered to me. If you’re anywhere near here I highly recommend getting a box. I’m going to order myself a box for delivery now, who the hell cares that it’s the first week of January and I shouldn’t be sitting around eating candy? Not me!

What is it about the taffy here that got the food network to showcase it. I know the establishment been here for over a century. Not just the shop but that delightful tasting taffy in general. I have tried non Dewar’s taffy and it’s just not the same, not even close. Something about it here that makes it different than the others. Just one piece can convince and convert anyone to this sweet treat. Not just any taffy but Dewar’s taffy. Once I figure out the secret, it can be shared but maybe not. Enough with the rambling. For now, just enjoy it or get it as a holiday gift for others to enjoy!

My favorite thing to order here is a chocolate malt shake, heavy with the malt. It is one of my favorite things. It’s delicious.
Service is alright, definitely could be improved. This place is pricey, but the portions are also pretty generous. The seating can be crowded. I opted to take my shake to go and binge watch The Mindy Project on Hulu.
Anyway, the take away message is: eat ice cream, preferably from here.

I am commenting on the service… I called in Saturday & was immediately put on hold & left on hold for 20 minutes… During which I paid for & finished pumping gas, drove up to the eye street strode parked went in took pictures of the 5 baristas taking care of 10 – 12 people in the store. I waited at the counter while I was still on hold … 5 minutes later a service clerk noticed me & yelled out #21… I looked around, I guess that’s me… she took my order while I was still on hold… now it was just a timing thing… as I was getting my order someone answered the hold by simply hanging up on me ask was paying for the order…
I love the ambiance, very good ice cream, sundaes, milkshakes & taffy… I really was going to get it anyway. But I guess the review was the poor telephone to go etiquette & service …
I’ll always go back to dewars but maybe not so soon…

Passing though old Bakersfield, I accidentally drove right by this cute, little old, soft green building with bright pink awnings and a big, neon ice cream cone on the outside. How could I not stop? I have heard of Dewar’s for years, read some of the reviews, fantasized about some day getting the opportunity to find out what this stalwart business (since 1909) was all about. The time had arrived, and I hadn’t even planned it.
A cursory look around and I was struck by the nostalgia. A vintage 1950’s, long, ice cream bar and soda fountain lined with Pepto-​Bismol pink and polka dot pedestal stools, with checkerboard tiled floors, original candy display counters, and sugary smells. It sure put it’s best foot forward.
We each ordered a child’s hot fudge sundae and paid extra for nuts. The nuts were too finely ground, almost a nut dust, and ended up driving me nuts. It was the lack of texture that caused my bottom lip to drop. And then, the hot fudge was just ok, more caramel-​y than fudgy, simply not up to my expectations. And no whipped cream and red cherry on top? What is wrong here? The only great thing was the high butterfat, vanilla ice cream. It was delicious. So, no, I was not in love with my sundae.
We did not purchase any candies. They are famous for their taffy chews, and that is not my thing. So I cannot report, you will have to decide on your own. The hand dipped chocolates? And more ice cream flavors to try? Well perhaps there is another visit in the future.
A 3-​star is all I can do for now, but it sure was cute.

Eat your ice cream in-​house! I’ve had a lot of root beer floats and Dewar’s might be my favorite. Their sundaes (black + whites!) come loaded with hot fudge or whatever topping you decide on. I just loooove when creameries pack on the toppings.
Old fashioned glasses and overall great classic feel inside the restaurant. We stop here on the drive up north from LA so I don’t get to have my ice cream here often, but when we are passing through we always make a little pit stop in Bakersfield for Dewar’s :)

So good!!! I enjoy ice cream all year round and they are my to go spot. My favorite is the peanut butter ice cream and I occasionally top it with some marshmallow fluff, taste so luxurious. The prices are reasonable and service can sometimes be slow, but I still go, so it’s not that big of a problem.

This is absolutely the best ice cream in town, in California, in the world probably. The ice cream is fantastic, my favorite being the rocky road. Usually I opt for the lighter ice milk; chocolate or strawberry with some toppings. On the strawberry, I love some fudge and almonds. Sometimes, I’ll get a black and white with peppermint ice milk, especially during the holidays. If you’re not in the mood for a cold treat, I can definitely recommend the chews. The downtown location has my heart, it’s usually a small wait but always worth it. The people are lovely and every combination of dessert is out of this world.

My boyfriend and I went last night due to my cravings (and mainly because I’ve never been to this location) and wasn’t disappointed despite of us rolling in so close to closing time. Everyone greeted us happily and our waiter treated us generously, hence, Dewars will always be a local favorite and it’s not hard to see why. So right away we ordered 2 Black & Whites w/​crushed almond toppings (1 order to-​go with a small Strawberry Sundae for the parents back home). As a heads up, no matter which Dewars you go, you’ll always receive the same great consistency. And no matter where you go you’ll always make a mess, so don’t worry! To be honest, that’s probably my only complaint– you’re not given a small dish plate underneath to catch all the crushed almonds that spill over when you’re mixing your ice cream –it’s just a personal OCD tick of mine I guess. Other than that, I’m super glad I was finally able to experience this step back into time with all the old fashioned feels. I’ll be back again! Hopefully for a tour of how they make their candy and such!
8.6.15 UPDATE:
–My boyfriend and I visited this location again after dinner to grab some ice cream to go. With it being Labor Day weekend, the location was bustling with the last round of customers, but we were still helped accordingly and even small chatted with the employees as they worked. The young lady waitress who interacted with us, Caitlyn M. I believe was her name, was very nice and helpful. Her service was top-​notch and her cheerfulness made our wait and overall experience so much more enjoyable. Thanks to her, we got to learn and even taste test the difference between their, «ice cream» and «ice milk,» and she even allowed us to try out different flavors without hesitation, while diligently working on a prior order. If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t have found the perfect small sundae combo of vanilla Ice Milk, Ice Cream, Hot Fudge, and Almond Crushing– basically a mini Black & White but not as thick as the original.

This place blow my mind !
1) The service here was excellent. My waitress let me try three different flavors before purchasing. Along with being patience with my selections.
2) very large portion! I had a kids sundae and the ice cream had like two scoops and I had a free extra topping! My waitress was the best.
3) very unique experience, when you enter you get a ticket and wait to be called get served. Everything is homemade. And it’s fun to see local people esp. When you are a tourists.

Well there you have it. Another 5 star review for the only place I talk about while out of town. Great service, great ice cream. Life is good.

Had the Black and White sundae and the hubby had the Black and Tan. He changed the chocolate ice cream to the brownie ice cream and it made it even better. I read about the marshmallow topping and people weren’t kidding… it’s soooo good. It was a little more than I could personally eat (I’m lactose intolerant and ate it anyway, it was that good) but what I couldn’t finish, my husband happily did.
The people there were really nice and very attentive. We got our ice cream quickly and everything was presented nicely.

This place is always great! I love to come here with my family when I get a chance to get some good ice cream! Dewars is one of the best ice cream spots in town! I also love the mini gummy bears! I don’t know of any other place that sells them! My family always enjoys the taffy as well! I love that the portions are always a good size and I can take any leftover ice cream home if I don’t stuff it all! I recommend anyone to go check out Dewars!

This place is my heaven!!! My husband’s parents live in Bakersfield, so we stopped here when we were in town. Only issue was that we went about 3pm when the high school across the street was letting out, so teeny-​boppers were everywhere.
Anyway, the store has a large glass case full of chocolates and candies on one side, and the other side is a 50s style soda fountain with a long counter and stools and a black & white checker board floor! We stopped in around easter, and they had gobs of chocolate easter bunnies, eggs, and fun candy! They are known for their homemade taffy — like chews; peanut butter is the original. The chews are good, but expensive! They also sell ice cream, milkshakes, malts, sundaes, sodas, etc at the counter!
We came for the ice cream! We sat up at the counter and ordered homemade maple and rocky road ice cream topped with marshmallow and ground walnuts! OMG amazing! Only bad thing was that I had to share it with my hubby! :) The maple ice cream was creamy, but not too overpowering or sweet. The rocky road was also delicious; rich chocolate ice cream with walnuts & mini marshmallows swirled in… but the kicker was the marshmallow topping. It was bright white, thick, sticky, goey, very sweet, but fabulous! Some of the best marshmallow topping that I have ever had!
I’m going to make or a point to stop here everytime we are in Bako!!! BTW, I like their ice cream much better than Rosemary’s…Rosemary’s is more expensive & has slow, terrible service.

I heard about this place long before I ventured into Bakersfield, and the double-​scoop of ice cream I got here did not disappoint! It has the atmosphere of an ice cream parlor from the 50s (and having been in business since 1909 probably gives it that air) and the folks working here seem to genuinely like doing so.
On a hot day I can see this being the ONLY place in town to go.
Take a number when it gets busy — and forget about that teeny parking lot!

With its beautiful old-​school soda fountain and wonderfully traditional flavors of ice cream, visiting Dewar’s feels like a trip down memory lane. The delicious sundaes, banana splits and floats (and a real counter to sit at) make this everything an ice cream store should be.
And don’t forget the peanut taffy chews, which should be a controlled substance if you ask me. I dare you to eat just one.
Just off the freeway, so if you’re passing through Bakersfield, do stop in.
