Captree State Park

I came to captree once for fishing and crabbing. Just a disclaimer, I am very new with this fishing hobby. I have yet to catch a fish, but I did have some luck in collecting crabs with a crab cage.
There is not size requirement for any of these crabs except if you catch a blue crab. I was told that catching a blue crab is extremely rare and if caught the requirement is 4.5 inches and it cannot be a female with eggs. I believe if you break the rules and get caught it’s 50 dollars per female crab that has eggs. You are allowed to keep 50 crabs, again, follow the rules of face the consequences. It’s also wise to follow the rules because you want there to be enough crabs for the days, months, and years to come.
If you do come here and if fishing is a hobby for you, you won’t be disappointed. Every time I come in always see somebody catch something, that itself is very exciting and the anticipation that you might catch something is exiliarating. Have fun fishing.

I came here with my hubby not knowing what to expect. This place is fishers paradise. However, we dont fish lol. The view was so beautiful! Thats the perfect place to watch a nice sunset. On the other side, you can picnic which is gorgeous. The view is out of this world and it is a great place to take pictures. You can also see the fire island lighthouse.

Well if you are looking forward for fishing, this spot never failed me. I have been going fishing here for the past three years every summer. You will spend about $ 45 for each person and they will take care of everything you need when in ters of fishing. This includes the boat ride, the fishing line, bait, rod, everything… All you have to do is to be there. They also have snacks and coffee for sale on the boat if you’d get hungry but I suggest you bring with you some beer and healthy snacks like maybe subway or lunch pack.
Please browse ahead online before going there for fishing season and schedules, you don’t want to waste your time driving all the way there for nothing.
This is like 2 hours away from the City.
It’s ideal for family fun bonding and activity date.

A totally under rated site on Long Island! So pretty and honestly never packed like other nature preserves and beaches!

Ok park right in the middle of the Great South Bay. It’s very small but it has a playground, docks where you can fish off of and a restaurant selling over priced fried fish and burgers. On the opposite side of the parking lots are small out coves where you can have a picnic. Just watch out for poison ivy along the trails. There’s a lot of it. I also recommend not wearing sandals or flip flops due to ticks. Bring bug spray too if staying for sunset or you’ll get eaten alive by mosquitoes.

Crabbing and fishing right off the pier

Amazing and serene views at this fishing pier. It has a bait and tackle shop right there with tons of parking, bathrooms and a restaurant. It costs $ 8 per car to come here. There are lots of boats that you can board to take you deeper into the Atlantic. Or go on their long wooden pier and sit on the many benches to go fishing or crabbing. The pier goes out pretty deep into the ocean and it’s well maintained.
People catch blue crabs and fish like flounder/​fluke. Can get busy during summer weekends.
Absolutely no dogs allowed by the way.

Summer of fishing. I finally got back into fishing and I’ve been coming here at least once or twice a week with a friend very early in the morning for some flounder (fluke) fishing off the pier. Ignore the fishing regulation poster on their bulletin. It’s outdated and the size requirement on that one is off. The 2014 sizes are lower than the previous years. You can now take home a 18 inch fluke according to the gov website.
If you come as early as I do, parking is free. I clearly remember years ago when parking was always free throughout the day but now, they collect a fee ($ 8). You can also get a night fishing permit here but the registration for that is currently closed. The pier is just how I remembered it. For the most part, it’s clean with the exception of seaweed everywhere and occasionally bottles and boxes of beer. The staff here does clean it but they don’t appreciate people leaving their trash behind on the pier instead of disposing it in one of the many trash bins that is provided.
A lot of people here go crabbing. The blue crabs look amazingly beautiful here but according to Environmental officials, waters around New Jersey are apparently toxic. Even though this is Long Island and we’re in a different state, just to be safe, as much as I love crabs, just avoid eating them for now.
Verdict — I enjoy every experience I have here in Captree. The early morning sunrise at this pier is absolutely marvelous. The sun appears bigger and closer. There is a bait and tackle shop on site in case you run out of bait or fishing accessories/​equipment. There are plenty of fishing boats to choose from. Everyone on the pier seem to be friendly. I have not come across any thieves who swipe your tackle box when your not looking. YES, that does tend to happen in the world of fishing. The stuff inside every man/woman’s tackle box can be very valuable. Replacing fishing lures, sinkers, hooks, etc is not cheap. There is also another smaller pier on the picnic side of Captree. That area is much more secluded but I personally don’t like that pier. It’s too small and the water over there is too shallow. Before any fishing trip, take a look at the Solunar forecast to see the best fishing times.

My first crabbing trip. We got a few blue crabs, or Callinectes sapidus. They are an olive green color. The males have blue claws, while the females have red claws.
The best season to catch crabs is predominantly throughout the summer in the months of June, July, and August, and some say that the best time for crabbing is in late August and early September,

This is such a beautiful place for some summer fun. When the weather was nice over the summer, I used to come here fishing or crabbing. There’ s a tackle and bait store in there so you’ll have everything you need there, even rental equipments. There is also a parking fee which is only a couple of dollars and you can park there the whole day. It’s right near Robert Moses Beach so you can decide to go fishing on one end and then swimming/​tanning on the other end. There’s a charter boat that sails out pretty often and it’s not bad for about $ 25pp for 2 hours. I heard this place got destroyed during Sandy and I hope it’s ok now.

A pretty view anywhere you stand… A boardwalk for fishing, crabbing etc, BBQ pits, soft sand… If you don’t like overcrowded beaches, this place IS worth a try :)

Captree is a really nice state park because its smaller size makes it more relaxing then the bigger parks.
They have a really nice pier that is great for fishing or just hanging out, enjoying the views of the water, Robert Moses causeway and the Fire Island lighthouse.
The marina area is huge and home to a large fleet of fishing charter boats. There are picnic tables, play areas and plenty of space for a picnic or BBQ.
There’s also a nice beach area and again the crowds are nothing compared to Jones Beach.
If you’re looking for some quiet time to commune with nature then this is the park for you!

Spending quality time with kids sometimes requires going to a place where all can just hang out and enjoy doing something fun such as fishing and crabbing. I will always remember when my son and I caught our first batch of crabs and giving each other high fives.
I guess kids all love the idea of catching something. In my son’s case, he loves seafood. So he had the patience to just wait and hope to catch more crabs to take home, cook and eat.
Captree State Park is definitely one of those places to spend time with family either to fish/​crab or have a picnic/​bbq.
You can go fishing or catch crabs off the pier or pay a fee to ride on the chartered fishing boats. There is also a picnic/​bbq area and a sand park in the vicinity.
There is no charge for parking before 6 am so early starters save $ 8 for parking. For crabbers, you can’t take home crabs that are less than 4.5 inches and crabs that are pregnant. You’ll be fined if you’re caught b/​c inspectors do walk around and will check.

I love Captree! I always come here after hours to get in free, I believe it’s 6pm. Either way I highly recommend this place for some stunning Photos of sunsets and the Robert Moses Causeway. If your coming for sunset shots then you’ll want to go after 6:30 pm anyway so you won’t have to pay. I don’t fish but this is a popular fishing spot as well.
This is also a great spot to come and have a bbq or just hang out with friends or even just take a stroll along the water under the causeway. It’s usually pretty quiet and there are a lot less people around even in tourist season in the evening.
The only down side is that there are a lot of gnats and mosquitoes in the evening. I had several photos with tiny black dots in them and once I had to pack it all up and leave because they got so bad! I won’t take off stars for that though because you can’t help nature and if your getting in free then it really isn’t that big of a deal. During the day they aren’t an issue. Also FYI the gnats tend to get the worst closer to the tall reeds that are near the water.
So bring some bug spray and a hooded sweatshirt because it gets cold here quick and very windy!

I came here several times during the summer. It’s a nice day out, so we headed to Captree to catch some crabs for dinner. We got there around 5:30 PM and paid $ 6 for the entrance fee. If we waited till 6 PM it would’ve been free. We had a huge cooler with wheels for easy handling, packed with drinks like Mike’s beer, snacks, and raw chicken drumsticks as bait for the crabs.
There’s a huge parking area, so there’s plenty of parking. My friend and I put the baits on our ring nets and had it setup (we had like 10 of those) and we were ready to catch some crabs. Make sure you set it up in the direction the water is moving. The easiest way is to look at what other people are doing. Once everything was ready we opened a bottle of Mike’s, sat down, and enjoyed the sunset. You can see a pretty amazing sunset over here. There’s lots of space so spread yourselves out.
When it was time to pull up all our nets, we threw back the crabs that were too small, the female ones (they are funny looking, you’ll know it when you see one, if you don’t throw it back and you happen to get check, you will receive a fine) and we kept the one blue ones (male) with the right size. We fished also but didn’t catch anything. Nighttime came and we caught enough crabs and we got ready to leave. You can actually see a lot of stars in the sky.

Captree is one of my favorite spots of Long Island, a state funded park for $ 6.00 parking fee yet I believe at night it’s free. On clear nights there are spectular views of Fire Island and a good place for quiet time or just talking while sitting in a car. My former love taken me very few times which he asked me the biggest question that changed my life here.
After sunset darkness dwells this park which makes it entirely impossible for beachgoers to see a thing. I would NOT highly recommend swimming at night as lifeguards are off-​duty. However, a walk on the boardwalk or sitting in a car for star gazing into the ocean for life’s reflection are highly recommended. As humans we all need to re-​charge!

Great place to come fishing and crabbing! Just be sure not to take any pregnant female crabs and crabs below the 4.5″ min. There is a toll charge to get into the park which is 6 dollars. However if you come after 6Pm its free. The only thing I did not enjoy in my trip here were the mosquitoes that came swarming us and ate us alive after 7Pm. You guessed it, This was the time we left. No fishing after Sunset, unless you have a license.
