Joe Momma’s Beachstay

This place is a total dump! On our last stay in Avila beach we visited Joe Mamma Coffee and their day spa and were totally impressed with the atmosphere, customer service and cleanliness… The Joe Mamma Beachstay is a totally different story. We were shown to our room and we walked into what appeared to be a room under construction. The walls were full of black marks, paint half way down the wall, dirty carpets and baseboards with filth and grim and all around unkept mess. We then entered the master bedroom and the curtain was see though, with a broken rod and only covered about a third of the window. The bed was floppy and the size of a double…
When we went to complain the gal was totally rude. She was willing to refund us if we stayed at another property. As she phoned the other hotel, my husband and I were talking to each other and she rudely intruded in our conversation and basically told us to shut up about how unhappy we were. We packed up our kids, got a refund and left for the lighthouse suites… Where we know it is clean.

First, we went to check-​in at 2:45 and were told check-​in was from 3 – 4. So we asked if we could wait and check-​in in 15 minutes. We were told that the cleaning lady came to work late today and they would call us when the room was available. So at 3:45 we were called that the room was ready. Checked in went into the room. The room was ok, nothing special for 300.00/night. No TV in the bedroom, so we turned on the TV in the lining room. The TV cable box kept resetting itself and then the TV would shut off spontaneously. Went to turn on the wall heater. Waited about 15 – 20 minutes and there was ABSOLUTELY NO warm coming from the heater. Went to the front desk to tell her about the heater. She had to call management to see if the rooms were even equipped with a heater. REALLY!!! How sad is that. Then we told her about the cable box and she replied, «Oh yeah, the previous people complained about the cable!» SERIOUSLY, could you have not warned us or prepared us. Then she sent the maintenance man in, after we established that there was indeed a heater in the room. He came in and looked at the wall unit with loose wires and told me that he needed to go look at another heater to see where the wires went.
SCARY. Since we didn’t want to chance having no heater, no TV and rude staff for the weekend, we left. The girl at the front seemed unhampered by our decision and rudely replied, «Good Luck find another place to stay.» Is this how you keep your rooms rented, by fear of not finding new accommodations. My car would be better than your establishment. Shame on you guys. That is emotional robbery.
You ruined our weekend and so went drove back home, where my TV worked and a I had a heater. The biggest shame of all is that when we go to Avila, which is often, we ALWAYS get a massage at Nekkid and coffee at Joe Mama’s. After the bad taste your staff left me with I WILL NEVER visit either one of your establishments. I’d rather massage my back against a rock and drink hotel coffee.

We have stayed at Joe Momma’s a few times and it’s the beach and the sound of the ocean that we love… It’s the place that we tolerate. It was my «Favorite» place to stay just because of the location and the beauty of the location. However, each time we go back, the service and friendliness has gone downhill. I booked a room online, paid for it and have an email confirmation. However, they called and absolutely refused to honor the price stating it was some sort of mistake on the website. How exactly is that my fault? Since I’m literally heading that way in a couple hours, I offered to pay them a little more for the room because I simply don’t have time to room hunt again before leaving. They refused not only to honor the rate I booked at, but any lowered rate at all! And they told me «Good luck» finding a room IN Avila for the price I booked at.
Very snooty and condescending. I won’t be back.

We often stay at this hotel when visiting Avila Beach. The children love it (teenagers) and it’s pet friendly. We love the short walk to the beach and the breakfast is included from Joe Momma’s Coffee House. I would like to see a second TV in the bedroom and the wifi never works in apartment D for some reason. I will stay here again.

Joe Momma’s Beachstay I hate to admit is GREAT because I would love to keep this hidden gem a secret but that would not be fair, I can’t live there, only visit. We will definitely go back as many times as possible during the year. We had the downstairs unit and just left our door open to the sound of the crashing waves, cruising in and out, feeling quite private. The extended complimentary breakfasts were unbelievably fantastic, fresh new breakfast items daily, great smoothies, not to mention the best lattes and panini’s. Bike rentals and cruising on the Bob Jones Trail a must. Buy fresh fish at the end of the pier, bring back and cook in your own great little kitchen. Stroll around the corner for appetizers & cocktails at the Custom House. Long walks in the morning along the beach, up the river, thru the little town. It just doesn’t get much better than this. Did I mention the staff was truly great, especially Emily at the front desk?:) Can’t wait to go back. Thanks to you all!

Joe Momma’s Beach Stay IS the BEST place to stay in Avila Beach!
Our condo rental was very well worth the price and we would most definitely stay again, and cannot wait (actually) to return.
The view and sound of the crashing waves from our room was perfection!
It was so lovely to wake up with the sun, feeling like you almost owned the beach to yourself, sitting quietly on the private balcony, sipping tea, watching the waves. Two geese even flew overhead, honking as they flew just a couple feet above…
The accommodations were more than sufficient. Great kitchen and spacious front room, with a separate bedroom and bath. The complimentary breakfast and espresso drink (or even a smoothie) was a nice touch in the morning. THANK YOU for a lovely stay! We look forward to returning soon! WE LOVE AVILA BEACH + JOE MOMMA’s!!!
P. S. — We grew up in SLO and have family that have lived in SLO since the early 1960’s, so we come up frequently to visit family and friends. We spent ALL of our summers as teenagers in Avila Beach back in the 80’s, and even though it has changed a lot since then, Avila Beach is still an incredible «Best kept secret» of a place to stay along the California coast. =)

The perfect beach getaway spot. The rooms really felt like a little home away from home and the beach itself is beautiful. The cove allows for a quiet beach spot with lots of places to lay out, stroll, collect shells, and relax.
The coffee shop connected to the place offers delicious pastries and coffee. I can not stress how friendly and laid back this place was and how accommodating they were. We arrived late and we were able to set up a late arrival procedure that got us straight into our rooms and even recommendations for dinner and activities throughout the weekend.
There are restaurants and bars within walking distance or a quick drive away. The Sycamore spas and restaurant is a quick drive down the road as well, which I also recommend.
We even took advantage of the on-​site spa and got massages which were wonderful as well. The massage therapists took the time to chat and get to know the kind of massage we wanted and made the experience even more restful.
Thank you for a wonderful, relaxing vacation getaway! We will definitely return.

I chose these accomodations from veiwing the on line link. I was expecting light airy and at least a glimps of the ocean accomodations. When I checked in, my friend and I were given a room on the ground floor that had the feel of a work room and laundry facility. There were rental bicycles parked in front of the windows and by the door. The inside was generally clean, but old potatoes, stale nuts and moldy olive oil were in the cupboards and the smoke detector had no battery in it. No bathmat, wash cloth and two bath towels. Clock on the wall did not work. Needless to say, we were very disappointed in the accomodations.
We spoke to the manager about our disappointment and the next day we were given a new room upstairs. The employees who work at Joe Momma’s were all very helpful and polite, however the owner, who was made aware of our concerns, was a total jerk and very disrespectful.

So where do I begin? Came here for my husband’s surprise birthday weekend and boy were we surprised! This place ended up being tied for the tackiest place we’ve ever stayed. We rented their «Streetside Deluxe Apartment» which was a small 1 bedroom apartment and here’s a list of what we experienced:
OMG the bathroom — light burned out, no 2 towel matched, floor rugs were older than we were and frayed beyond belief, rusty crooked metal object on the wall as décor, toilet plunger leaning against the wall, bathroom fixtures either so inexpensive and/​or old that they actually left a notice in the room to explain operation, faucet dripped constantly, fan so dirty it barely hissed when turned on, heat lamp burned out.
Bedroom — stark & too small for the king-​sized bed that had a mattress so old/​soft we literally rolled toward the middle and couldn’t sleep (even listening to waves lapping outside), another rusty crooked metal object on the wall as décor, 1 lonely nightstand on 1 side of the bed so small that it only held the lamp and a tiny rainbow colored clock, drapes were tacky and inexpensive, the floor fan we ended up trying to use was loud even on low and barely worked, we could hear people shouting and talking outside the window until 2 a.m.
Outside bedroom door at the end of the long hallway — sat a giant jug of laundry soap on the floor in front of an under/​over washer/​dryer.
Kitchen — basic, basic complete with mismatched & missing silverware plopped inside a cabinet that wouldn’t close because the holder was too big, kitchen table for eating or sitting at tiny and an afterthought, nothing, not even water, in the refrigerator as a «welcome to our facility — hope you’re comfortable».
Living room — Plastic L-​shaped sofa that was uncomfortable and hard to seat 2 on, TV tiny and screwed into the wall, old and in not great shape DVDs & books to choose from.
Coffee shop where you get your breakfast w/​your room rental — selections pretty limited, quiche good, scones that were actually raw in the center, kids working the bar seemed unorganized and ultra slow plus not too friendly, coffee good (when we finally got it).
Out in front of our door — rental bikes lined up blocking the entrance to our apartment after 6 p.m.
I think the apartment I moved into when I was 18 years old and out for the first time had to be better then this one. And considering that it came with a price tag of $ 200+ per night — yikes! Since we didn’t want to be in the place thank God the beauty of the area and easy access to everything saved our weekend. Don’t know who’s running this place, seemed like all kids, but I think it needs a grownup touch. And maybe the other 2 apartments might be better. Who knows? Maybe anywhere else in town would be better.

Door to unit would not open. Waited patiently for 1−½ hours for owner to show up to open the door. After opening the door to the unit, he barred me from entering and said that «I don’t think you will be happy here.» This is after he insulted me and lied: «I hear that you have been highly unreasonable.» «Who told you that?» «No one told me that.» «Then why did you say it?» «I didn’t say it. You must have misunderstood.» This gives you the idea of a momentously confusing and ridiculous interchange, including: «Have you had this trouble many times before?» «What, that I can’t get into a room?» «No, that you are unhappy with the accommodations.» In tears, I drove home, defeated. Based on previous negative reviews on Trip Advisor, management may refute my statements here in Unilocal.Do not believe whatever they say; what I have said is the truth. Too bad — from the glimpse I got of the apartment, it was lovely.

We love this place. Nice clean one bedroom apartments with, kitchen, dining area and deck with ocean views. Located within easy walk to dining, wine tasting, bars and shopping
The highlight of our stay is always a massage with «ELDONA» the woman with the golden fingers. She is also one of the sweetest women I’ve ever met. Check it out, it’s worth every penny.

right across from the beach; going thru cinnimon bun withdrawel. Everyone was very friendly and great service. The room was comfortable. I am docking one star because the place did need a good clean, especially the carpet. They need to take the carpet out all together. We will definately come back again; this trip was much nicer then Pismo. Shelby (front desk) was so awesome… thanks for all you help

Great location and wonderful staff. The coffee shop is amazing and staying here includes all the amazing coffee and treats you can consume (the Intelligensia coffee is truly amazing). There’s also a great spa. Overall a great stay!

An incredible place to stay if you are willing to shell out a few extra bucks compared to some of the other hotels/​motels in the vicinity. Apartments above Joe Mamma’s coffee shop with full kitchen (and every kitchen utensil you’d ever need) and a balcony with ocean view. Free morning coffee and pastry from the coffee shop included. They also have a couple places that are less expensive with no view. I’ve stayed here several times and each time I have left feeling relaxed and pampered. It’s one of those places that I don’t tell too many people about because I like to keep it my little secret but have decided to quit being selfish and tell the world it is a great place to stay if you are at Avila Beach or in the San Luis Obispo area.
