I’ve been playing golf at Prairie Woods for several years. As the name indicates the course offers a little of both. The front and back nine have a very different feel; I believe that they were designed by two separate people. The front nine is mostly in a wide open prairie setting and the back almost exclusively in the woods; duh! It really is a pretty course and a little bit of a hike, but very walkable. I’m always surprised at my score as the course plays easier than it appears and the greens are pretty forgiving. The course is very well maintained and probably one of the better public courses in the area. The staff is friendly and the bar serves a very good Friday Fish Fry with a small, but great salad bar. I think that they have a golf and dine deal on Friday’s as well. There are also good deals for golf during the spring and fall. Gripes: There is no starter or ranger, so things can sometimes get a little slow. They also space the tee times every eight minutes which I find to be a little close, but manageable. That said, I have found that there are certain times of the day that you can pretty much have the course to yourself, but that will remain my secret. In summary Prairie Woods is very picturesque course and almost always a pleasure to play and a great option for most of Walworth and Rock Counties.
