History

Established in 2010.

In the early 1900’s Fishbeck Confectionary stood where the Avalon Grille now stands. In the 1930’s it became Reyes Curios Shop run by Ernesto Reyes. The shop contained exotic curios from around the world that Mr. Reyes would personally purchase on his frequent travels. In a private back room of the shop, he sold a very exotic and pricey item — shrunken heads.

After Mr. Reyes passed on, the Island Company leased the store to Waltha Clarke’s’ Hawaiian Shop, a retail clothing chain from Hawaii.

The Catalina Department Store continued to thrive but Waltha Clarke’s’ went out of business in the early 1970’s. The space was converted into an Information Center and ticket office for Discovery Tours, a division of the Santa Catalina Island Company.

In 2009 the Island Company decided to better utilize the busy corner of Crescent and Catalina Avenues. Taking over the department store and dismantling the Information Center, they combined the two stores into one and created the Avalon Grille.
