Weavers and Spinners Society of Austin

We’re a weaving and spinning Guild, and open to all, and all volunteer. It’s a great place to come to learn to weave or spin. More experienced members often mentor less experienced, and some wonderful equipment can be borrowed after you’ve been a member for 3 months.
We have members of all stripes — from teenagers to retired, beginners to advanced, men and women.
We meet from 7 – 9 the 2^nd and 4^th Thursday of each month, with the 2^nd Thursday meeting being a more formal program and the 4^th Thursday being more of a hands-​on learn to do something type meeting. Full meeting info can be found at

Look for us at the Austin Mini-​Maker Faire and the Rodeo, and who knows you might see one of us spinning at a library or Central Market as well!

I’m not disagreeing with Rachel, any group has a mixed bag of people, but my experiences have trended much more towards the positive. I came in knowing I wanted to learn more about weaving, but not knowing where to start. I figured I might have to take some classes and save up to buy the equipment. Instead, WSSA loaned me a baby wolf loom and Meg even came over to my house multiple times to help me learn how to get started. I’ve made some great friends through this group and learned a lot. The 2^nd Thursday meetings are one of the highlights of my month.

«The Weavers and Spinners Society of Austin (WSSA) meets at 7:15 p.m. on the second Thursday of each month. (No meeting in August.) A voluntary „show and tell“ by members of selected current projects is followed by a brief discussion of new and old business, then a program is presented by a member or guest speaker. On the fourth Thursday, members gather to weave, spin, knit, or work on other fiber-​related projects. It is a perfect venue for beginners to gather tips and techniques from more experienced fiber artists.»

I’ve had a wide range of experiences with this group, ranging from very positive to frustrating or obnoxious. Some of the members are incredibly helpful and will go out of their way to get you started weaving or spinning, while other members may only offer snide comments while just sitting there, doing nothing.
I have been a paid member in the past and probably will be again. The $ 15 membership fee gets me far more information for my dollar than a spinning class at Hill Country Weavers would. This year I have decided not to pay dues, as I will have to be working during most of the meetings. Perhaps in the future I will re-​join and throw my two bits of wool into the mix.
