Triple Crown Carpentry

Josh helped design, created, and installed a custom master closet, floor to ceiling bookshelf and cabinetry, and another bookcase. From initial consultation to the design process to the execution, the experience was excellent. He was extremely patient and thorough with his responses throughout all of our projects (which spanned 6 months) and honest about what he could and couldn’t do in our budget. His work is beautiful and his prices are reasonable for what you get. Efficiency and Quality are the two words that come to mind. I found him on Unilocal and am very thankful we went with his company. Highly recommend!

I really, really, really wanted things to work out with Josh. My mom used his service (she wrote on of these Unilocal reviews!) for a lot of work in her house, and it all turned out gorgeously. It’s clear that the work he does is high quality and at a reasonable rate.
That being said, Customer service is huge. As is being clear when your medium is email as opposed to phone for communication.
To outline my experience – Josh was very communicative via email. We originally set up a time to meet. The morning of, about an hour before our appointment, he emailed to cancel due to a sick kid. In a perfect world, he would have called me to tell me this since it was day of, but I forgave that because his kiddo was sick and it was unexpected. We rescheduled the appointment via email. His most recent response:
Good morning Lane.
Let’s meet Tuesday same time.

Tuesday rolls around at the designated time, and Josh is nowhere to be found. I waited and missed 30 minutes of work before I emailed him and told him that I will no longer be using his services. His response:
Um, Lane, I never heard back from my last email stating to meet Tuesday. I can’t afford to just drive and assume the client will be there. Sorry it didn’t work out. Good luck.

The frustrating thing about this is that I was never told I needed to confirm. In fact, he said «Let’s meet» not, «Does this time work for you?».
If I could give Josh any pointers (And let me just state that I work in a Customer-​service heavy industry and manage a team who’s job is to provide great Customer service!), it would be this:
–Be as clear as possible with your Customers – if you want a response, ask for a response
–If you’re not sure on whether you are actually meeting with a Customer, send a quick follow-​up email, or call, or text
–Remember that your Customers are paying and affording you to live! You’re working for them, not the reverse!
If you’re looking to use Josh, I don’t blame you – the guy clearly does phenomenal carpentry. Just be wary of his emails and maybe opt to talk to him on the phone.

I contacted Josh through his website to ask him about building a bookshelf for me. I described my project, told him I was flexible with both time and materials, that I wanted a cost-​effective but quality project. I even sent a picture of what I wanted him to do. He replied that he is not a «cost effective“person and did not have time to build the shelf I wanted. His email was only a sentence long and completely lacking in customer service. I’m glad that others have had a better experience with him than I have had.
I actually received a very kind email from a different company stating that they did not have any availability until October, but that they could certainly help with my project. I will be giving my business to them. I will also be using them for a complete shelving system in the garage. Wish I would have had a better response from Triple Crown!

We hired Josh to build new cabinet doors in our kitchen, new pull out drawers for inside them, and crown molding in 2 rooms.
When he came out for the estimate:
He was very kind and patient. He was able to do everything I wanted, including matching the design from a photo I tore out of a magazine.
When he came out for final measurements:
He was careful with my kitchen! :) He also let my 8 year old son hang around to watch his work.

He sent a couple of pics of our doors along the way. Talk about getting excited about a job… we could hardly wait for installation day!

This was the best part of all. Josh worked so hard to complete the job in a professional and timely manner. He was up front about the need for time… always professional and so easy to communicate with. He was a pleasure to have in our home. Always respectful of our family continuing with life while he worked. And his carpentry work? GORGEOUS! Everything is absolutely perfect!
In all:
He’s honest, trustworthy, and a joy to work with! He clearly has a gift in carpentry. We will ALWAYS turn to Josh with carpentry needs.

Josh is very good at what he does. We hired him to build a large built in bookshelf with drawers and a desktop. We were a little nervous about putting down a deposit months in advance (he was booked so far in advance!), but the end result was fantastic. He was always forthright in communication and reliable. He did what he said and was honest when he had to reschedule something. On top of that, he was always friendly and direct.
Josh listened carefully to exactly what we needed, talked out any possible issues we’d have, and accounted for all the outlets and such that would have to brought out through the piece. We also had to re-​do the crown moulding around the piece, and he noticed the poor installation of the rest of the moulding in the room, so he agreed to re-​do the rest of the moulding, too. He’s meticulous and thorough.
We got to watch the progress as he built the piece, because he posts pictures on his Twitter account, which is great!
The installation went smoothly, and the final piece looks great (as you can see in the picture) — it’s exactly what we wanted and discussed. The new moulding also looks great!
I would absolutely recommend Josh for any carpentry project!

My wife and I hired Josh to build a large built in bookcase with attached sliding ladder for our home to convert a dining room into a library. As an architect, I work with contractors quite often and have to say that Josh is one of the highest quality craftsman I have met and one I would recommend to any one both professionally and personally. He is responsive, energetic and knows his craft and has great design insights. The quality of the work is outstanding and the entire experience was turn-​key easy. I won’t look anywhere else for my carpentry needs, you shouldn’t either.

We moved into a new house on the east side of Austin several months ago. While we’d had our builder install built-​in desks and shelves in our study, we found the cost very high (and the quality lacking). Our 14′ long living room wall looked very stark with its small TV cabinet and wall-​mounted TV set, and we realized we needed something more in proportion with the room. So I looked on Unilocal and found Josh Hager… and followed up with his website. I was impressed with the size of the projects he tackled, so figured he might be able to do a good job for us.
Josh responded quickly to my first e-​mail and came over within a matter of days to give us an estimate. He looked over my drawings and came up fairly quickly with a cost I found reasonable. Josh inspired so much confidence that we asked him that same evening to look at another space (upstairs) that needed a built-​in. Once again, the estimate was reasonable. A week or so later, we thought of another project Josh could tackle: our master closet. Again, a reasonable estimate. We gave him deposits for all three projects.
Josh is very busy, and with good reason. He does excellent work at reasonable prices, is totally honest and does not inflate the costs of materials. He uses good-​quality materials (no MDF, thank heavens!) And Josh makes recommendations that improve on whatever you might have in mind, based on his breadth of experience. It’s all about quality at a reasonable price. Josh uses great hinges on cabinet doors; soft close and push-​button removable. Further, his estimates for both materials and labor, at least in our case, were spot-​on relative to what we ended up paying. We felt it was worth waiting a few months before Josh could get to our project.
Our largest projects were installed by Josh and a helper in a couple of days. The paint-​grade wood and great workmanship made the wall units look so nice that we were tempted to leave them unpainted. We actually did leave the interiors of the cabinets unpainted… and they look great. Josh was able to connect us with a painting company to do the finish work within a week or so after he completed installation.
The end results were phenomenal; the cabinets Josh built totally changed the look and feel of our rooms in a good way. The quality of his work and the scale of the project made the cabinets a focal point in our living room. We are very pleased and won’t hesitate to call Josh again if we need any wood work.
Side comment: I find it odd that so many reviews were screened out, given I can tell many (if not most) are legitimate, based on photos on the Triple Crown website.

Josh is truly a professional. As others have stated, he clearly likes what he does and he takes pride in his work. We hired him to build a tall book case with drawers and cabinets and a ladder (I will put up a picture). Not only it is beautiful, the whole experience was pleasant. Josh is very reliable (he is there when he says he is going to be and will communicate if otherwise) and I really appreciated how easy it was to communicate with him about the work. We got to see our shelves being built online via Twitpic. He was helpful about ideas for the design (we weren’t sure what we wanted). The price was fair for the quality of work and he was accurate as to how much materials would cost us. Josh also set us up with someone else to stain and finish the bookcase (when that is done, I’ll post a picture of that, too).
When we decided to hire him, there was a bit of a wait (I think it was a couple of months). I assume this is because his work speaks for itself and he has a lot of satisfied customers. When it came time for our work to be done, it was just when he said it would be.
We’re new to the area, so we don’t get a lot of word of mouth recommendations about things we need done around the house. Thankfully, we found Josh on Unilocal and we’re so happy we did! When we need more carpentry work, we know who to call!

Josh has a ridiculous amount of patience and willingness to complete a job, even if it takes 45 emails at last count (mostly sent from me). He even worked with the door company to ensure the right measurements directly.
He put in our entry door this last weekend and the amount of care and concern he had from start to finish on the project is really great to see in a business that often prides itself on speed, not quality. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire him again — he’s a true gem.

Josh did a fabulous built in bookshelf for us! We loved his work, his professionalism and his response time. He calls back, responds to questions and does GREAT work. We liked him so much he is designing and building us a desk now too!

I used Josh for a built in for an entertainment unit at home. He was a great communicator and the project went very smoothly and looks amazing. He was fair in his pricing and was actually ahead of schedule.

I had a built in arched TV nitch in my living room that has been wasted space since having my flatscreen installed above the fireplace. I wanted some adjustable shelving done so got on Unilocal calling handymen and carpenters. Almost all the bids were per hour which is fine for some but not what I was looking for. Josh was straight up and gave me a flat price (but had the choice for hourly bid) so there were no surprises. Honestly seeing the work on Josh’s website I was surprised how affordable he was. The bookshelf looks phenomenal and you would never have guessed that it wasn’t original to the house. How he did the top trimwork on the ceiling of the arch was just genius. 5 stars all day. P. S Since Josh built my bookcase the majority of his reviews are no longer posted on Unilocal.He has more reviews on his website so take a look there if you need more convincing.

Josh is the best. He’s a very honest, straight forward, caffeinated guy! We wanted a custom made entertainment center, something to last us for many, many years to come. We got Josh’s info from Unilocal (of all places) and contacted him. He was very helpful in getting our ideas onto paper, and then making great suggestions to improve the look of the entertainment center.
His estimated were right on the money, no pun intended, and his work was right on time. He posted pictures of his progress, kept us informed at every step, and let us come down to the shop to see the entertainment center. His work is simply awesome! Solid, handmade, beautiful. When it came time to install it, he was here right on time and worked for a couple of hours to make sure it was perfect and stable, and now we have an amazing piece of furniture!
His prices are very reasonable for what you get. We priced a pre-​made piece from Pottery Barn or some damn place, and with the custom made piece, assemble, stained, and installed, we paid less! Can’t beat that.
If you have anything in your home that needs remodeling, or a new piece, call Josh, you’ll be very glad you did. Don’t waste time shopping around, seriously, just go with Josh.

Living in a 800sqft condominium severely limits your options for furniture. That’s okay, because you learn to throw out what you don’t need and maximize the space you have. After deciding that I didn’t want to sleep on a mattress on the floor anymore, I began my search for the perfect storage bed. After 12 months of uselessly going back and forth between various local furniture warehouses, corresponding with a manufacturer in England, and scouring the internet, I came upon Triple Crown Trim.
Josh scheduled a complimentary consultation at my place and spent about an hour talking with me, doodling, and just getting the general idea of what I wanted. Even after this somewhat thorough conversation (and somewhat because of his honesty that he hadn’t specifically done a bed before), I was very sure that Josh did not understand all the details of what I wanted. I am very glad I decided to give Josh the benefit of a doubt and let the project continue.
A few of the main features that I found very helpful from this business:
1. Josh will constantly update you on even the most minute details. He will not leave things to chance, as he knows everyone’s taste is different. He posts pictures of the construction process on the company’s twitter feed to let you know the full story of how things are looking. This, however, does not mean he is in any way similar to the annoying pestering carpenter from that one Seinfeld episode. Bonus points to you if you know what I’m talking about.
2. Triple Crown Trim is local, so if you have a problem/​concern at all with your product, all you have to do is pick up a phone or even pop by the wood shop. Josh let me stop in randomly during the manufacturing process to see how my custom bed was going. He even spent some time teaching me how he was doing things and how’d he go about finishing the bed.
3. Josh’s estimating abilities concerning materials and his bid for labor were right on the money. I did not have to deal with a half-​finished product with a ballooning budget. He even finished the bed earlier than I anticipated.
4. Not only is your custom product from Josh exactly what you specified, but it is of significantly higher quality material/​craftsmanship. The final bed looks like something you would find in a downtown furniture store selling for 2−3X what I paid for with Josh. I have been disappointed by custom projects and the too-​good-​to-​be-​true promises of the carpenters before, so I tempered my expectations. I was definitely not expecting for the bed of my dreams to be delivered and assembled right in my home.
Although it might seem as if Triple Crown is paying me a significant amount to write this glowing review, that is not the case. I am a resident of Austin who randomly found this business through Unilocal,and I am very glad I decided to work with Josh to create my perfect bed. With any business, I feel the greatest gauge of whether someone is impressed with the final product/​service is whether the customer returns to the business in the future. I will definitely be going to Triple Crown for all my future carpentry needs.

Josh and his assistant Matt did wonderful job installing crown molding in our living and dining room. He came out to estimate before the job done, and he understood what we wanted and gave us enough information and advice.
On the day of the job, they were on-​time, (which is really rare nowadays.)

There is always a pang of horror when it comes time to find a contractor to help fulfill a dream I have for a certain project. I can only ever think of horror stories people have told me about experiences they have had. This is one reason I use Unilocal.I read what other people say, consider differing opinions then I can make a more informed selection. I read Josh’s reviews and at first thought that these were too good to be true. Then setting skepticism aside I reread them and felt encouraged and comfortable calling him for a small kitchen improvement project we so desperately needed. i called him, he cam out a few days later, we talked, he was straight forward and gave me options.
I received his bid and was happy with the plan he had outlined. Unfortunately some other expenses reared their ugly heads and I had to postpone the job. About a month later I emailed Josh and asked if we could pick up where we left off. He came out again just to reiterate the plan to make sure we were seeing the same end result. He told me when he would begin the work, when he would install, post pictures of the process as well as before and after pics of the project.
He started, posted and installed exactly as he promised. He delivered a quality product and kept us informed along the way. I love that he makes the time to involve the customer. I don’t care how old you are, it makes you feel special. It also makes his portfolio richer and keeps it up to date.
We talked about another project in the near future. I know for certain I will call Josh of Triple Crown Trim Carpentry!

Josh and company did a great job on my master bedroom and bath from beginning to end. He spends time consulting and making sure you know what you want and what you’re getting. We picked out some great shaker-​style doors that didn’t break the bank and decided on a modern look for the baseboards and door trim. He installed six doors including a double door, and all of them were perfectly flush (my old doors let light through the cracks, but these are tight as a drum).
Throughout the build, he had to work around the sloppy original construction of my walls and doors, and responded to each obstacle with great communication and problem solving skills. When one of the doors was not up to his standards, he took it down and hung it again, which tells me he’s not satisfied with anything less than perfect. The work speaks for itself– very clean, precise, and classy, and at a very affordable rate.

I was looking for a carpenter to do some work on my 1970 3 bedroom /​2 bath duplex so I hopped on Unilocal to take a look around. I decided to give Josh a call — and that was a good move!
He replaced 2 exterior front doors (A and B side of duplex), all the interior doors, trim, and baseboards on the B side, and other misc. trim in kitchen and other spots that needed fixing.
All doors were level, plumb, and solid. (I honestly think he’s the kind of guy that couldn’t walk away from one if it wasn’t done correctly.) The new 4″ door trim and chunky 6″ baseboards look sweet and modern. Other visiting contractors (dry wall dude, plumber, etc.) have commented on his work.
He and his co-​workers worked extra hard and were very efficient with their time. Despite the fact that I added on a few extra tasks at the end of the project, he got them done for me on time. He can pick up materials for you if you wish, or you can do it yourself and save a little $.
The thing about Josh that sets him apart from most others is his attention to detail and his pride in his work. He LIKES what he does — and that means you’re going to have a job well done.

Josh at Triple Crown installed crown molding in my bedroom and living room. He made it so affordable for me – I ordered the material myself (he would have done it for me, but it saved me a little $$). Then he came over and installed it all extremely fast!
He also talked with me about a plan for future work that will help me to update my house, and make the look really cohesive, with less cost than I had expected.
I’m always going to call Josh first when I am ready to continue upgrading my space. I trust him completely!
