The Salon at Merriltown

What these reviews don’t tell you is that this salon is in a retirement village. The staff was very friendly, I got a pretty good haircut for a very low price… But I felt out of place and I left wth wet hair. Everyone is welcome at the salon, it’s not actually owned by the retirement village. Just FYI.

I needed a cut so checked Unilocal and picked this one totally blindly. So glad I did, she did an AMAZING job! She is very kind and knew exactly what I wanted. I’ve recommended her to my family as well.

I’ve been a regular at the Salon for a while. I always get compliments after I visit. People notice and make remarks. I usually don’t pay much attention to what people say about me, but I have noticed that people notice me after a visit, so the Salon is my recommendation. They give me friendly, personal service, at reasonable prices. I could not ask for more. In fact this is the only review I have written this year (so far), so take that, my fellow Unilocal readers, as high praise!

I’ve been going to this salon for about 2 years, and I absolutely love it! Shyla does an amazing job on my massive head of hair. She has dyed it, highlighted it, cut it (you name it), and the finished product is beautiful every time. The prices are better than any I’ve seen around North Austin/​Pflugerville. The stylists are always super friendly and welcoming, and I really enjoy my appointments.

I found the reviews on Unilocal and decided to try this salon as it is very close to my home. What a find! I moved to Austin last year and had only tried one place so far here and the stylist butchered my hair. So to say the least, I was anxious about trying a new place and a new person. The reviews convinced me to give Shyla a try. She was wonderful. She carefully listened to everything I said about what I wanted and about my lifestyle and needs and the quirks my hair has. She gave me a style that works with my life and work and looks great. She will keep working with you to get you what you want. I cannot say enough good things. The price is great, the place is charming, and the people are so friendly and nice and caring. I have found my salon in Austin. They only accept cash or check which was fine by me.

I have been going to Shyla for over 5 years and have had a wonderful experience each and every time. I’ve never sat in a chair and just gave all control to a stylist before Shyla. I HIGHLY recommend salon at Merriltown and Shyla. If Shyla is unavailable her mom and sister are fabulous also! Total confidence and comfort in their salon.

This review is LONG overdo, however I wanted to work with Shyla twice before I decided to put my opinion on this place one way or another.
Just like the speakeasies of the earlier century, this place is not really advertised and is hard to find. Tucked behind the gates of an apartment complex (Lodge at Merriltown) its definitely a no frills place without all the pretentious hoo-​hah and bloated prices to match.
However, I am really pleased to say that I am not compromising the quality of my hair style by forgoing a fancier salon! Shyla is a bad ass. She listens closely to what I want and if she is unsure about the idea I have for my hair she always clarifies and never assumes.
I think what I hate MOST about 98% of stylists are their «holier than thou» attitudes and giving me what they THINK I want/​what THEY think will look better instead of what I asked them to do in the first place. I don’t need to be lectured or chided about what you think I need – SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
Fortunately Shyla is honest when I ask her to be and gives me whatever I want with my hair otherwise. She is a pleasure to talk to, both of my cuts have been excellent, and when I wanted a funky color combination on my hair this time she totally got it!
Also, Shyla lets me bring my service dog in the salon with me. YES he’s legally allowed anywhere but I get hassled by folks about it all the same even though he’s more well behaved than 100% of children and 98% of adults. Shyla totally respects this necessity of mine and is extremely accommodating.
Ditch your yuppie-​ass salon and see Shyla and her sister! Your wallet will thank you, too.

I have tried multiple Austin salons over the past 15 years, and will go to the Salon at Merriltown from now on. The color, cuts, and highlights are better than the higher priced salons I have used, yet the prices are lower-​it may be because of the location– (Less than $ 100 for color, cut, style and highlights!)
The atmosphere is warm and friendly…(like that on «steel Magnolia’s»). Sylvia, Shyla and Jenna are all skilled artists who keep up on the latest products and styles. I always get asked «who does your hair?»

The Salon at Merriltown is not one of the salons in Austin that you will find advertised much, nor will you find a website. It is a hair salon that you only find through friends. Today I am your friend recommending this salon.
Sylvia Jaramillo is fantastic. I have never been disappointed. I feel that her rates are awesome! ($ 95 for color and cut!) You can’t find prices like that anywhere. She runs the shop with her two daughters and I’ve seen them do great cuts also.
The salon is a little hard to find because it is in an apartment complex. Be sure you know where you are going!
