The Cake and Spoon

Wow. Just Wow. This is how you’re supposed to make pies. With buttery graham cracker crusts that crumble as your fork cuts through it, along with creamy rich filling. We weren’t able to grab the famous Bourbon pie they serve at Franklin’s, but we definitely stopped by the farmers market to try one of the lemon custard pies. So good. Almost worth waiting in line at Franklin’s to try the Bourbon pie. Almost.

Delish to tell the least! Very balanced, full of flavor, not too sweet. All-​time favorite Lemon Tart. Other pies are also to die for tasty… Melts in my mouth so smoothly and satisfyingly…

Over the last one year, we tried many different goodies from them. Love them all. Never had anything I did not like.
My fave is … No, not telling. I need to keep them for myself ;)

I constantly crave Cake and Spoon!

Visited the downtown market this morning while walking the dogs and decided to try a fennel & gouda quiche from The Cake and Spoon … totally wonderful, best quiche I have ever eaten. The filling was light and moist full of delicious cheesy, fennel flavor and the pastry was thin and crisp. Also shared a chocolate hazlenut tart and a blueberry scone, both of which were scrumptious. This will be a regular part of our Saturday morning walk in future!

I went to Franklin’s and bought a bourbon banana pie and immediately had to research where Franklin’s got it from… turns out it’s cake and spoon. It is one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life… and I’ve had some good food/​desserts in my life. I will definitely try to find them at the farmers market or wherever they are.

At the cedar park farmers market today purchased the pecan pie tart and apple cake I was blown away with the depth of flavor and our moist the cake was. I will be coming back next Saturday.

Love Cake and Spoon. My favorites are the spinach and cheese quiche, little german chocolate cakes, coconut cream tart! I have tried many items there and those are the ones I always return to. I don’t care for scones or cinnamon rolls, however, they do look great and many people are buying them, so I am sure they are great too!

I ordered a cake a couple of weeks ago for my husband’s 40^th birthday and it was absolutely perfect. The communication, payment and pickup were easy and painless. The cake itself was a 4-​tiered vanilla cake with lemon curd, raspberries, blueberries and Texas peaches. It was huge, pricing was totally reasonable and most importantly this cake had the best flavor and textures I’ve found in recent cake-​related memory. Tart and sweet, dense and creamy, with the pop of the fresh fruit. Didn’t get soggy. Didn’t need a scoop of ice cream, didn’t have to scrape off any frosting to leave in a sad pile at the side of my plate. Completely delicious. If you’re considering Cake and Spoon for your next celebration, absolutely do it! We were beyond impressed.

We tried the Texas pecan pie. It was good but a little to sweet for our tastes. The key lime pie on the other hand was delicious. We got the pies from Franklin’s BBQ.

First discovered as the provider of decadent desserts at Franklin Barbecue, the punched up semifreddo-​style pudding pie far better than any of the smoked meats per my palate, it was with gluttonous delight and good fortune that I again encountered Melissa Brinckmann’s superlative locally sourced cakes, pies, cookies, and scones en route to my car after brunch at Lambert’s. At five years old still without brick and mortar, instead opting to keep it simple and fresh at several local restaurants and markets such as Saturday’s Sustainable Food Center Downtown Market it was to a wide variety of items and a friendly clerk happy to tell Cake and Spoon’s tale that I was greeted and simply asking her what was «best» after a ten minute chat my attention was directed to a trio, the flaky crusted caramelized pecan pie I’d already swooned for at Franklin and two cakes just as good. Admittedly full after a heavy day of eating thus far but unable to resist a bite… or six… after snapping photos it was with the dense apple cake that I began, a just-​set pudding texture greeting me with soft apples and plenty of cinnamon set against nuts with brown sugar, and saving the rest for later — even better gently warmed — I turned attention to the carrot cake, a supple crumb laced with texture and spice divided to layers by cloudlike buttercream, the cream cheese tang proving an ample foil to the natural sweetness of pineapple.

I am not generally the person who buys sweets from a bakery. However, 2 weekends ago, I hit this place up at the downtown SFC Farmers Market with Yolanda G. She had read about their Dark Chocolate Espresso Shortbread.
OMG! OMG! OMG! It is like three buttery, espressoey, chocolatey vices in one! The best part, you taste those in heightened abundance and NOT the sugar. Yes! Yes! Yes! All I need is some prosecco and a *cigarette. Ahhhh!
BTW — I went back this past Saturday to buy more. My Name is Darla A., and I am in love with Cake and Spoon’s Dark Chocolate Espresso Shortbread and I cannot get enough. I may need a 12-​step program.

I’m glad I found cake and spoon. FANTABULOUS custom work. She made my wife a pistachio cake for her birthday and it was magnificent! She was the only baker in town that would even take on the project. Most of the other «Bakers» and sweet shops would only make a vanilla cake with pistachio icing if they would even make one at all. Melissa did not even hesitate to respond. In fact she said «standard or vegan?» GOTTA LOVE IT!!! She actually made a cake with pistachio in the batter, pistachio butter-​cream on top, and crushed pistachios all over. Take all your business to Cake and spoon! Do yourself that favor if you will only do one. If you don’t like it, you don’t know nuthin’…

This place is amazing. Every time I go to the Farmer’s Market, I have to stop by the Cake and Spoon stall.
I’ve tried a couple of their delicious items
–Bourbon Banana tart from Franklin’s BBQ… with the hint of bourbon, it was wonderfully dreamy and smooth.
–Frangipane Tart. The crust is flaky and buttery and the center was rich topped with fresh raspberries filling. Once you start eating it, it’s difficult to stop. Definitely do not eat on an empty stomach, it will just leave you wanting more!

Saturday morning, I had just dropped my cat off at the vet. It was early, so I decided to head over to the downtown Farmer’s Market. I got there around 8:45am or so, and walked around for a bit. I was happy to see Cake and Spoon’s booth — I had wanted to try them for a while, and there they were!
I walked up, and couldn’t decide on just one thing… so, I, uh… I bought lots of stuff. I bought a Chelsea bun (cinnamon roll), an apple cinnamon scone, a ginger scone, a mini pecan pie tart, a pear tart, and a bacon and cheese quiche.
Ok, in the interest of full disclosure, it’s not like I ate all of these things by myself. However, I immediately inhaled my Chelsea bun, and it was so damn good! THAT is how a cinnamon roll should taste. It was light, chewy, and not too overly sweet. Such a good balance — I was in love.
Here’s how lame I am — I was on the road when I ate my Chelsea bun, headed toward home in way north Austin… and I decided to hit up the Farmer’s Market at Lakeline Mall, cuz I knew Cake and Spoon had a booth there, too. I got there, and bought 3 more Chelsea buns. (Another for me, and 2 for my husband.)
You could say I’m addicted…
The pecan pie was freakin’ amazing, too — I can’t wait to get another one of those. It was sweet, and the crust was perfectly buttery and flaky. The scones were huge and moist, which was awesome. The pear tart was great. The only thing we haven’t tried yet is the quiche — it’s in the fridge, and we’ll probably get into that tonight or tomorrow morning.
By far, my favorite baked goods in Austin. Yum, yum, Cake and Spoon!

On Thursday, my friend sent me this IM at work: OMG. I just had a scone that is the best thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. She explained it was from Cake and Spoon and sent a link to their website.
That IM set off a quest to try one of these scones for myself. I took my mom, who also loves baked goods, with me to the farmer’s market this weekend. Between the two of us, we sampled the ginger cream scone, chocolate cherry scone, cocoa cake, blue cheese and red onion quiche, lemon curd tart and chocolate hazelnut tart. Everything was amazing!
We weren’t the only ones stocking up. In line in front of me, one person bought five quiches and another bought four quiches. I got the last ginger scone and last chocolate hazelnut tart. At 9:20 am. They opened at 9:00 am.
These goods are the real deal, absolutely delicious.

I am getting really tired of places like Cake & Spoon, they have officially ruined me for any other bakery desserts. If I’m not dreaming about their Lemon Curd tart, I’m wide awake craving it. It was beyond my wildest expectations, and absolutely PERFECT, PERFECT, PERFECT!!! The crust alone puts my grandma’s recipe to shame.
I’m so glad that I don’t live in Austin, because if I did I would eat Cake & Spoon desserts for every meal. I would be so fat & happy.

Cake and Spoon… so delicious. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. I look forward to picking up my goodies at the Cedar Park farmers’ market each Saturday morning. They sell out really fast these days, so I recommend placing an order in advance if you know you’ll be going, which you can do on Facebook or via email. You can now get their treats at Franklin BBQ and Hillside Farmacy as well.
The scones are the main draw for me (ginger crème, pear cinnamon, dark chocolate orange or cherry, fresh blackberry…), and they beat every other scone I’ve had before — and that’s a lot of scones. Other highlights are the quiches, key lime tart, dark chocolate hazelnut tart, blackberry almond and lemon lavender shortbreads, and anything with the lemon curd. The Chelsea buns are super sticky sweet, but nothing here screams «over-​sugared». The baby cakes are very tasty and I love the flavor combinations (coconut cream, lemon poppyseed, sponge cake with homemade marmalade and buttercream…). Please do not cause me to gain weight.

I heard about this place n had to try it. I think it’s called cake n spoon because u will want to spoon these cakes!
I bought 30 bucks worth of stuff which pretty much is close to half my farmers market budget.
And I don’t regret buying a single thing. I got the chocolate cocoa baby cake, the lemon custard baby cake, the key lime tart, the lemon lavender shortbread bars, the ginger scone n a red onion quiche.
In short: oh my heck!
Everything I heard was true: their baby cakes were soooo moist! The flavors, just so perfect, the scone– who would ave thought to put candied ginger in one?
This place puts bountiful bakery to shame. Yep, seriously. I will splurge on cake and spoon whenever I go to the farmers market — it’s worth it for quality bakery items. I hope they never get a storefront because I’m afraid the quality might suffer– and I’m greedy– no one else needs to hear of their good stuff. Just wish I could order a birthday cake without paying $ 4 a slice– how many slices in one anyway?

Cake & Spoon, if you create a storefront, you will make my dreams come true. It’s difficult for my husband and I to make it to Austin early on a Saturday morning for farmer’s markets as we are at Fort Hood, but Cake & Spoon is so delicious that it makes getting our butts out of bed early on a weekend morning absolutely worth it. It doesn’t hurt that the lovely ladies are always so pleasant to us.
We have tried several baked goods from Cake & Spoon, including the chocolate hazelnut tart, apple walnut cake, date scone and blackberry almond bar. Everything has been absolutely delectable, incredibly fresh, and perfectly balanced so that it’s not overpoweringly sweet.
Although we try to hit up new stands every time we go to the farmer’s market, we make an effort to buy something from Cake & Spoon every time because we know we are guaranteed to something tasty. In fact, on a trip to Franklin BBQ we ordered lemon chess and key lime pies simply because we knew they were from Cake & Spoon, despite the pounds of meat we were already planning on consuming.
The simple fact that all of my pictures of Cake & Spoon’s desserts already have a bite taken out of them should mean something. It took a whole lot of self control to pause to take a picture before devouring the rest of it.

Café Caffeine in South Austin is the only place to get Cake and Spoon items other than directly from Melissa at the farmer’s market. Since I work there, I’ve been lucky enough to try everything we get from C&S:
* scones (double ginger and cream, fresh pear with cinnamon, and dark chocolate with sour cherries)
* tarts (chocolate with hazelnut, frangipane with seasonal fruit, pecan, and lemon curd)
* cheesecake (with seasonal fruit toppings)
Most coffee shops around here get their baked goods from Quacks. We did, too. I’ll say I never had a problem with any of the fine products Quacks offers, but C&S definitely kicks it up a notch.
We’re talking the best in town.
