Today I had an appointment with Dr. Koval at Texas Ortho. I left that appointment crying. It’s hard to explain how worthless they made me feel. I visited Dr. Koval, maybe a year ago and had not seen him since. I had to cancel some appointments for various reasons, like I had back surgery, etc. and I feel that that was held against me.
I’ve used Texas Orthopedics for many years. Dr Garcia did my knee surgery; Dr Smith did my back surgery. I love them. I always felt that they had my best interest at heart. Dr. Mukai has treated me for back issues and even though our sessions were very brief, I felt cared for.
Dr. Koval gave me an injection in my shoulder today, but showed no interest in trying to determine why I was feeling so badly. He said go to pain management.
Well Dr Koval, if this was your way of letting me know that I am not valued as a patient, you win. I will not be seeing you again.

I broke my two vertebra and slipped two disks December 2015. Texas Ortho was able to see me right away, get me in for an MRI that same day, and make me more comfortable while I waited for results from the MRI. I did not like how I was treated as a patient. I felt like every time I went to see the doctor they had a different plan of action for my recovery process. 8 out of 10 times when I went in to see the doctor, Dr. Mukai, I saw her nurse practitioner. Personally, I am not a fan of taking medicine, but I took everything they told me to take. When I started to react (become angry, irritable, and depressed which are side affects from a specific medicine) I was told to keep taking it. I stopped taking it right when I got off the phone and later learned that I was supposed to ween my self off that specific medicine. I would not recommend my friends or family to Texas Orthopedic.

Dr. Blais was a complete waste of time & money. After making me feel ridiculous for even being there since I wasn’t in terrible «pain» & not wanting to even do an MRI I was sent away. After seeking another dr’s opinion, an MRI showed I have a herniated disc. I would never recommend this dr to anyone.

This is barely 4 stars. I see Dr. Mukai for spine issues. My physical therapist, John Key, is great! Really helpful. But my actual visits with Dr. Mukai have been super brief and didn’t feel thorough. The office staff is consistently unorganized. It’s also really hard to get an appointment when you need one.

Dr. Blais did a great job surgically repairing my broken collar bone. Follow up appointments were always quick and easy (in to take x-​rays and out within 30 minutes).

I’ve been lucky enough to work with 3 medical professionals at Texas Orthopedics: Dr. Ai Mukai, her Clinical Nurse Specialist Kelley Pennell, and Physical Therapist Sharyn Brady. All of them have been top-​notch.
A friend referred me to Dr. Mukai last year after the mysterious pain in my right shoulder came back for a third time. At that point, the pain was radiating down into my arm, I was losing sensation in my fingers, and I could barely sleep. Needless to say, I was at my wits’ end as nothing I’d tried –hot showers, OTC painkillers, regular massages, chiropractic adjustments – seemed to help.
I was able to get an appointment quickly. Dr. Mukai treated me with such compassion that I immediately felt like I was gonna be okay. She asked some questions, performed a few simple tests, and told me it sounded like a disc injury resulting in a pinched nerve. She prescribed some stronger painkillers to help me sleep and sent me for an MRI at another Texas Orthopedics location (everyone there was great, too). Once the MRI confirmed her diagnosis, she told me they could fix it with physical therapy so I wouldn’t have to undergo surgery. Awesome!
Dr. Mukai went on maternity leave shortly before I started PT and left me in the capable hands of her Clinical Nurse Specialist, Kelley Pennell, who has monitored my progress in the most efficient and thorough manner I could possibly expect. She’s always prompt and upbeat, and she’s never fazed by my questions.
I did my PT with Sharyn Brady in the same office. She’s incredibly personable and managed to make it fun for me. She helped me correct my posture, set me up with some exercises to strengthen my neck and shoulder, and after 12 sessions over 4 months, I feel fantastic. I’m actually sad I won’t be seeing her anymore now that I’m a zero on the pain scale.
I’d be remiss if I failed to mention the fabulous office staff as well. They’re always friendly, quick and helpful, and they never yell at me when I’m late. ;)
All told, I can’t recommend the good folks at Texas Orthopedics highly enough.

I was referred to TX Ortho for a strained Achilles tendon by my primary care provider. The strain is healed, mostly, but there is a little numbness we wanted to check into. I showed up a little early which was my fault, but still ended up waiting 30 minutes after my scheduled appt. time. I was taken back only when I inquired if I had possibly been forgotten since I watched several people come after me get called in for the same doctor. Next I was deposited in a room by the nurse who asked 2 – 3 question and then stated an X-​ray would be required. Fine, Id still like to speak with a doctor first. Next the X-​ray technician is there trying to get me to go with her. I asked if I could speak with the doctor before any X-​rays were done. No problem… so I sat in the exam room for another 30 minutes. Next I hear the doctor chatting with the nurses in the hall about Game of Thrones — seriously? I have 2 kids about to get out of daycare, Ive been here over an hour already without seeing an actual doctor, and you’re going to stop to chat TV for 5 minutes with the staff??? Class act there, brother. Class. Act. That was the point that I left without seeing a doctor, informed the front staff I was leaving, and offered to pay a sitting room fee if needed.

I was referred to Dr. McDonald by my chiropractor after my MRI results came back showing a tear in my labrum. It was easy to set up an appointment and my appointment went smoothly. Dr. McDonald explained my injury to me and took x-​rays to get a better look at my hip. He explained the procedure to fix the tear and the procedure and I was able to schedule an appointment for my surgery with ease. I have heard positive feedback from coaches and friends who have worked with him and feel comfortable under his care.

I was lucky enough to find Dr Ai Mukai for my back pain. I threw my back out cleaning and couldnt move without my back spasming so much it drove me to tears. After 1 visit with her I was cured. I didnt have to wait for an appointment. She spent a lot of time with me. She was very thorough and answered all of my questions even writing some of it down for me so i could refer to it later. I was given a direct numer to call a week later to give my status so i dont have to waste my/​her time if i didnt need to come in. I refer my friends and family to her every time and feel confident that they are well taken care of.

I was referred to Texas Orthopedics, specifically Dr. McDonald, by a friend who had been his patient for an ACL tear. I’ve had a terrible pain in my hip for 18 months and was about to go insane when she suggested I see him. I told her I needed a doctor who would listen to me and not just tell me I was fine and send me on my way and she assured me that Dr. McDonald would be that person.
I was fortunately able to make an appointment for just a few business days later, only to find they were running a little bit behind. The nurse took me back and I had some xrays taken of my hip (and my shoulder for another issue). Then I sat and waited in the exam room for a while. I began to get concerned that their backlog would mean a rushed appointment for me. Finally, Dr. McDonald came in the room and we went over everything for both my shoulder and my hip. He never once rushed me, let me ask every question I wanted to, repeated everything so I could write it down, and I felt like I was his only patient that day. I was excited to have a diagnosis on both my shoulder and my hip so that I could move forward with physical therapy. After only two physical therapy visits my pain is already diminished.
My only complaint is that the walls in the exam rooms are paper thin. I heard all about my neighbor’s issue with having surgery on a particular day as opposed to another day, so I can only imagine my neighbors heard me shout in pain during my exam. It’s strange to me that when builders know they are building a facility specifically for a medical office, they make the walls so incredibly thin and this is a very new building.
Other than that, Dr. McDonald and the staff are all fantastic, patient, and friendly, and I encourage you to go here.

I have nothing but good things to say about Texas Orthopedics. My doctor, Ai Mukai, is awesome! She takes the time to tell me all of my options and reviews not only the physical aspects of the treatment options, but the financial ones as well. I’ve never had any wait time problems, I am always able to easily schedule MRIs, and I am only given medications or injections when my doctor and I agree that it is the best course of treatment. Dr. Mukai recommended that I consult a neurosurgeon to make an informed decision about surgery (which after doing so, I declined). My husband and I are both patients of Dr. Mukai and we have recommended her to friends as well. I’ve also seen Dr. Bunch when my doctor was unavailable and he was very good as well. I had one billing issue since I have been going to TX Orthopedics (over 3 years), and the billing department was very helpful in resolving the problem.
I am really surprised at the negative reviews I have read here and hope it doesn’t discourage anyone from seeking treatment here if they need help. My experience with this office has been pretty great!

Horrible. Spent over six months with a shattered disc that eventually was replaced by a qualified doctor. Evidently the doctor I saw at Texas Ortho (Ai Mukai) read a Facebook post by me and determined via it that I was just fine. I was given pill script after pill script by them after she viewed an MRI, this same MRI was seen six months later and immediately read as me having a shattered disc that resulted in an immediate cervical spinal reconstruction surgery. Happily now I am doing great, no thanks to the endless pills and injections that they gave me. I won’t start on how one of the doctors calling me a ‘drug seeker’ was taken out of context… horrible place. Avoid!

I called Texas Orthopedics on one day and was set up with an appointment the very next day. I was assigned Dr Robert Blais as my doctor for a knee issue. I had been having knee pain, swelling and my knee locking in place not fun. He was very friendly with great bedside manners. He gave me details of my knee problem and showed me on my X-​ray what was taking place and causing my pain. He went into details of how to fix my problem and I told him that I needed to be fix this as soon as possible because of my employment status that I could be called to leave town on a very short notice. He was very willing to accommodate my request and my surgery took place per my request. he gave me details as to what to expect during and after my surgery, he also called the next day himself to check in on my status after one of his children’s soccer games… when have you had that to take place before… I would return to visit him with any orthopedic issues in the future anytime. It was a pleasure to meet him as a physician and on a personal level.

I first have to say in some ways I feel 4 stars is quite a stretch. On the other hand, there are a couple of individual doctors, physical therapists, and tecnicians in this group who warrant 5 stars!
What you get with Texas Orthopedics is hit or miss. I almost have to say you either get GREAT service, or you get shake your head, lift your chin, walk away as you count to 10, and get a second opinion or ask someone else to take care of whatever small service you need that some of the staff are unable to deliver professionally.
I am still a patient in this group, and have surgery in my near future. Wish me luck that I hit the 4 and above and avoid the weak links that drag this practice down!

I was recommended to the Texas Orthopedics center after failing to get results on my chronic inflamed legs from several other doctors and an airrosti. Unfortunately, this experience was no better.
After waiting 40 min the doctor spent probably 10 min in the room, didn’t really listen and suggested two extreme solutions without explaining much on either. She also pretty much brushed off my questions (she was clearly in a hurry) and then I left with a $ 300 bill.

I always experienced a long wait for the doctor when going here. I found it strange and felt like I was part of a cattle herd when being called back to see the doctor because the nurse would call 2 or 3 names at the same time to bring us back into treatment rooms. Once in the room, there was usually 20 minute or longer wait for my doctor (I saw a doctor that treats hands, wrist and elbows)
I tried all other therapies prior to having surgery, but ultimately my condition required a surgical correction, which has been remarkably successful. I am able to perform my job duties, and can actually feel my entire hand for the first time in a long time.
When I got my stitches removed all seemed fine, and a week later, at another follow up, the doctor found a 1 cm piece of suture that was not removed by the technician. That could have been a problem, as this was not the absorable kind of suture. Had the doctor checked my incision after the sutures were removed, he may have noticed what the technician missed. But in the end, it was noticed before it became a problem.
I had no problems scheduling surgery, and yes they ask for the money up front, but that is standard practice in healthcare, and didn’t bother me. My insurance pays what they pay, and the rest is my responsibility.
For me, a higher score would come from slightly more personal care (call me back individually and bring me to a room, then get the next person) better attention to detail from the technicians, and less wait time to see the doctor. To the doctors, your time is money, and so is mine.

im not a fan of three stars reviews. it’s like i can’t make up my mind.
i went to seton ER, and they said to go to tx ortho in a couple days. i called and they set an appointment. i was wearing the plaster cast ER put on me, and drugged.
i walked into tx ortho and they gave me five pages of forms to fill out. note: tx ortho has a handy website that has the forms to fill out online. i spent an hour typing with one hand, so i wouldn’t have to do it at the office. nope, still had to fill them out. husband did it, but that was pain just in and of itself.
nurse came in and cut cast off. i sat there for a half hour in pain, with no support on my wrist. doctor came in. poked, prodded, squeezed. i flinched so many times, he seemed to get irritated. «we’re looking at a surgery here. we need to find out where it hurts.» okay, but a bit of kind bedside manner would be nice.
X-​rays. nurse came back in and put on an air cast. it was a bit rough, dizzy, crying, pain. she told the doctor, he came back in and apologized. at one point, i said ‘i don’t like him because he’s too tall.’ pain can do funny things to you.
left with air cast and mri scheduled in two weeks.
i want to have full confidence in tx ortho, but the bedside manner was not up to par. i can handle a lot of pain. i have had broken hands, wrists, ribs, and have way too many tattoos. but the squeezing and trying to bend an injured wrist, and rushing an air cast on doesn’t fly with me. even when i injured my wrist, and went to the ER, i didn’t shed a tear. in the tx ortho visit, i cried. like a lot.
