Robert Edward Blais, MD

Dr. Blais performed knee arthroscopic surgery last month. He is very professional and efficient. I do like that he is personable and doesn’t just rush through the appointments. He explained in detail what he would do for my knee. It has healed up nicely. I also like the fact that they use their own surgical center. Saves tons of money over a hospital stay.
I would recommend him to anyone that needs a orthopedic surgeon. Happy now!

When I went in to see Dr. Blais I honestly didn’t think I would see him more than once. But since my tendinitis was worse than I thought, it turned out that I had several visits with him. He is a very friendly and thorough doctor. If you have an early appointment, Dr Blais is the one to come and get you! Turns out I needed surgery and he explained what exactly was going to happen. I would recommend him to anyone needing an orthopedic doctor. He even sent cupcakes after my surgery! ;)

I broke my fifth metatarsal three months ago and it’s still not healed! He put a cast on me for 2 weeks then sent me on my way. Now three months later I find out I should have had surgery!!! What a waste of time.

I suffered a compression of the distal radius (basically I broke my wrist) while doing Cross-​fit. I was told by Dr. Blais at South Austin’s Texas Orthopedics and Sports Medicine that it would require surgery. I was so nervous because I make my living as a legal assistant and type all day long. Plus, this was also my first surgery ever. I made it nearly 50 years without needing surgery! Dr. Blais is very matter-​of-​fact and straightforward, he won’t sugar-​coat things, which is what I needed as I would have done anything to avoid surgery. Dr. Blais is very professional and well-​versed in doing this kind of surgery. Alas, I had the surgery and was back to typing in just over a week. The Physical Therapy afterwards with Mary Tyson was hard, but it is what you must do to get flexibility back. I would give both Dr. Blais and Mary Tyson A+ — they are consummate professionals and am thankful that I was treated so well! I now have a plate in my wrist that is permanent, but the scar is fading and no one would ever guess I had a plate. I am back to doing Yoga and lifting weights! I feel that I was very lucky to have such an excellent doctor! Thank you Dr. Blais!

Dr. Blais was the surgeon summoned to my surgery the night of a horrific biking accident involving myself, a parking sign and a concrete curb. Between the hazy grogg and brief spans of consciousness, he checked in with me in my recovery room.
Once I was through with the post-​surgery bandages, I went to his South Austin Orthopaedic clinic for what would be the first of several follow-​ups. After the nurse carefully removed the bandages, allowed me to mourne my wounds and removed the black Frankenesque stitches, Dr. Blais showed me a charming x-​ray of my radius and ulna with the two monstrosities binding the breaks together. He answered my questions about how I experience change in barometric pressure within my scars (got to be the most bizarre feeling ever), and how long my hard cast would have to be kept on. Only 2.5 weeks, wahoo! I think I hugged that man. One more x-​ray and he sent me on my way.
Follow-​up 2.0: Time for the hard cast to come off. They used the saw (not so scary), allowed me to hold back the tears once more at seeing my own mutilation, and had me cleanse the areas around the scars. Enter Dr. Blais. He puts up the same x-​ray and recommends I take a picture of it myself if I don’t want to shell out the $ 10 it would take to wait weeks for a copy. He tests my existing range of motion in the wrist that was dislocated, noting I could use a splint for 3 more weeks.
3 weeks later: Fridays are this clinic’s busiest days, so try to schedule an appointment on any other day if possible, or brave the 50 minute wait. 4 minutes with Dr. Blais and I’m looking pretty good orthopaedically speaking.
Things I praise him for:
— Actively tries to cut unnecessary costs (like x-​ray orders).
— Eye contact, good communicator, laughs & smiles. Nothing awkward, presuming, or condescending.
— Wears a picture of his family on a huge button.
— Makes you feel comfortable.
Odd but Innovative:
— Encourages self-​motivated exercises before rushing into physical therapy as an immediate remedy.
Things I wish he’d implement:
— Option to designate his patients hardware cards, as in I-​have-​metal-​stabilizing-​my-​bone-​structure-​so-​if-​you-​would-​just-​let-​me-​off-​the-​hook-​based-​on-​this-​signed-​card-​saying-​I-​really-​did-​have-​metal-​surgery-​I-​can-​get-​on-​this-​plane-​and-​out-​of-​your-​hair.
