Modesty Hair Studio

I’ve been looking all over Austin the last four years for any one who had the expertise to cut my Asian hair. I’ve found her in the form of Song. I get the impression she gauges your personality and caters her services to it. For me, that means she’s not engaging in too much small talk. She tells me what she’ll do based on my thoughts and start snipping away. She will occasionally pipe up to tell you what she’s doing to different parts of your hair and then go right back to it.
I asked for her to thin out my hair without taking off length and boy, did she do a great job. She took about half the weight off but my hair still had body. Months later, it still looks great.
Definitely go with Song. They’re about how much you would pay at any typical salon. I parked on the street.

I wandered in when an appointment fell through at a salon nearby, and they were very nice about fitting me in on a Saturday afternoon. I got a wonderful cut from Shannon, so I was ultimately glad about the snafu at the other place. She really took her time to listen to what I wanted and discuss options, and towards the end of the cut she had me look and see how I was liking it and was happy to adjust where I realized it needed to be a little shorter. My hair is curly/​wavy and has a mind of its own, but it has behaved very well since she cut it, and is even less unruly first thing in the morning, when it was previously prone to making such weird formations that it was a little disconcerting looking into the mirror.
It usually takes hairdressers a while to figure out my hair, but this was a very good first cut. Normally I wouldn’t give a five-​star review til I’ve tried a place several times, but it turns out Shannon also cuts the hair of a co-​worker of mine who always looks fabulous.

OMG Shannon is the queen of «the bob!!» I decided to cut my super long hair into a nice short and modern bob and Shannon did exactly what I wanted! I have never left a hair salon feeling so satisfied with the results. She was incredibly precise and even cut my bangs exactly like I wanted, which is extremely hard to do since I often cut them myself and am very picky. I cannot say enough good things about her, if you want a bob go see her right away!

Update! Modesty has stayed my all-​time fave. I have to give props to Amy there as well as Stacey. How awesome is this place? Amy is super skillful, accommodating and communicative and can knock out my haircut with such ease and finesse that I’m beginning to think this place houses some sort of magical energies. These ladies are magic. I never thought I’d be salon-​bound in any sort of regular pattern but when it’s time to visit Modesty, I can’t wait! Love it. Go there if you’re in search of a new place. You won’t be disappointed.

I can’t say enough good things about this place. Shannon is INCREDIBLE at her job, holy shit. She’s super meticulous and precise. My haircut is absolutely perfect, and Shannon made me feel welcome and at ease. This has been a wonderful experience for me and I’ll certainly be coming back.

Shannon has been cutting my hair for almost four years and I truly LOVE her! She just does an incredible job. It’s very difficult to find a stylist who knows how to do a great short haircut, particularly a proper stacked bob, which she does with skill and artistry. Shannon is Sassoon trained and technically meticulous. I go there looking like disheveled riffraff and leave looking and feeling sexy and gorgeous! What’s more, the cut even looks great when it grows out — fabulous for the busy grad student. I think she might be best kept secret in Austin… so get ready Shannon, secret’s out!

So happy that I found a great hair studio that is walking distance from my apartment! I just moved here so I’ve been searching for a new hair salon and thankfully the previous Unilocal reviews led me to try Modesty. I’m not usually adventurous with my hair, but I figured a new city deserved a new hair style. I brought a few pinterst pictures with the textured bangs I was hoping for and Brianne nailed it! She made me look as close to Olivia Wilde as possible. She also made some suggestions about adding texture to the front pieces of my hair so the bangs would blend in. It looks fabulous and I’ve gotten so many compliments. The prices at the studio are also very reasonable. Brianne’s price was $ 55 and with a Unilocal check in you get $ 10 off your first cut. I would highly recommend this salon.

Shannon just cut me up reaaallllllll good. The haircut duration was 1 healthy pour of white wine in duration. Very glad to have found my go-​to stylist on my first attempt.

I got married May-​2011 and the wedding dress that I wore was a 1940s white tulle gown. I had no idea what to do with my long hair, but I had some vintage styles in mind. After searching around on the web, I came across Modesty Hair Studio. Others’ reviews on Unilocal eluded that a vintage flair could be accomplished here. I met up with Song about a month before the wedding and she tried out a few ideas. I loved her honesty… she wasn’t willing to give me an updo that’s been done a million times on other brides. She too wanted to give me something amazing to go with my vintage dress. After chatting with her a while, she is into all things vintage. What perfect person to create vintage «mane artwork»!?!
We had a morning wedding and Song again accommodated the early 7am appointment to work on my hair. I was nervous and tired that morning, but her demeanor is so nice, and that put me at ease. After the ‘do was done, I was again impressed with the reasonable price for her services. My hair is pretty darn stubborn to deal with.
I received so many compliments on my hair the day of our wedding and it looked spectacular with my dress. Through all of the dancing and driving in our car between the ceremony and reception locations, my hair stayed in place. I couldn’t have been happier!!! I was nervous about having to find a new stylist after moving to Austin. But after reading other reviews here, especially the ones about Stacey, I figured she’d be a good choice. And I (and everyone else) was right! We found the right hair color I’d been using, she does a great job with the cut, and I get a bang trim in between visits. I’m really happy I gave this place a chance. What are the odds that the first place I tried was outstanding? This is my new salon!

Amy Bonneau is fabulous! I followed her over to Modesty and have never had a bad experience. Amy is easy to book with and the does wonders for my terrible roots!
The salon is adorable and right int the heard of East Austin where you can hit some cute shops and restaurants after! They also sell the Kevin Murphy product line, which I love!

I have never had a bad haircut here. And my hair is tough to cut. Let’s just say that finding a hair stylist for the ‘fro, is like finding a canary in the coal mine, a diamond in the rough, a baseball player that doesn’t take steroids… well you get the point.
We found Tracey Denison on accident, and my was it a great accident. My ma was in town for ACL last year (go ma!) and needed a cut to the curly locks upon her head. I had good experiences here before, so I suggested my mom get her hair cut here.
She is a nervous patron because people usually screw up her hair. Tracey spent the time, and took small steps to ensure her hair cut was just right. My mom loved it, and it grew out perfectly. She was even telling me on the phone how she wished Tracey was where she lived since it was so hard to find someone.
Well, since she did so well on my mom’s hair, I decided to go to her as well, since you know… I inherited the curls from ma. Let me just say, cutting curly hair is tough for anyone, and those who specialize in curly hair are hard to find. Also, having been the recipient of many a bad hair cut before… going to a new person is almost like walking into a place expecting the worst, and hoping for the best, fully expecting to be traumatized. (Yes…I’ve had BAD haircuts).
So Tracey is Ah-​mazing. She spends the time with me to really understand what my goals are, how my hair curls, talks about proper curly hair maintenance, takes it step by step and shapes the hair really well.
Also — best thing, or at least this has been my experience, most stylists seem to be REALLY comfortable with straight hair, and seriously just don’t understand how curly hair shrinks up. Tracey can cut my hair and shape, and take off just the tiniest amount, which allows my hair to curl properly, shape well, and not look frizzy, and still not make it look like it has shrunk 2″.
Not only that, but she is easy and fun to talk to. From the other reviews it sounds like she is just as good at straight hair, as curly, but let me say — I’ll give a strong enforcement for her curly hair skills. Go see her. She is awesome.

I can’t recommend Stacey Pridham highly enough — she is the BEST at both cutting and coloring hair. She’s been cutting my fine, limp, slightly wavy hair for years. Right now it’s also over-​dyed (from dyeing it twice at home, not having it professionally done) and therefore straight and straw-​like, and Stacey still manages to make it look really good. Yesterday she fixed a home-​haircut I gave myself that just went wrong; an hour at Modesty with Stacey and I looked cute and stylish instead of weird and frumpy, like before! Thanks so much, Stacey!

I am agreeing with the 5 stars for Stacey Pridham. I had been to so many places trying to find someone who knew how to undercut hair. That’s the technique for people who have fairly straight thick hair or barely wavy hair, where they angle the cut so the hair turns under instead of going into a flip. So many stylists, including pricey stylists, just blunt cut hair. Fail. Stacey is fabulous with this undercutting. She is also great with bangs. She knows how to get them into the right shape so that they do not all bunch up together into a blob. She has also recommended a couple of Kevin Murphy products that really helped my hair. She waited to see how my hair responded to the take-​home samples before she tried to sell me anything. Modesty Hair is far from where I live, but it is totally worth it to have Stacey cut my hair.

I get my hair cut by Melissa Titus and followed her from Method Hair. I tried so many hairstylists before I settled on Melissa. She’s friendly, smart, and I always leave with a fantastic cut.
The 11^th street location is very cool. There’s lots of local shops and eateries to browse. Also I like the Kevin Murphy hair products sold here. Try the colorbug for a fun way to add temporary color to your hair.

Need your hair colored? Lindsay’s the best in town.
I ran into her the other day and recalled how awesome my hair was back when she was doing my cuts and color. Like Jennifer N., I also have heavy Asian hair that takes a superhero to stack up and maintain.
Lindsay is an «artiste,» lemme tell ya. She’s not afraid to tell you like it is, including that the punky color of your dreams is not what matches your skin tone best, and she’s just easy to be with and talk to. Back when I was working the corporate gig, Lindsay suggested hiding my shocking hues underneath my bangs, so that if I parted my bangs one way for my 9 – 5, I’d look totally tame, and swisssh… if I swept my bangs over to the other side at 5:01 PM, you’d know I was ready to head downtown.
Thank you, Lindsay, for being such a genius.
Over more than year or so, I first got my fix o’ purple, pink, and then electric blue, the last of which I had really originally wanted, and sho’ ’nuff, was the least complementary to my Asian skin tone. My white gf also got her color done by L and loved it.
Time have changed now, and I’m an old housefrau pinching pennies, but if I could do it again, I’d head straight to L for some pizzazz. She’s the only one who’s done MY color in Austin.

Tracy Denison. She is the best hair stylist I’ve ever had [and I’ve had mostly bad ones, so I know what a good one looks like].
Beyond being awesome at cutting hair [my fiancé and I both have short hair and she does a fantastic job with our hair], she is so nice and easy to talk to. You know when you feel like you have to entertain your hair stylist by being funny and talking a lot? Well, you will never feel that way with Tracy.
I called Modesty back in November for a haircut and I was luckily assigned to Tracy and would not consider going to anyone else. My fiancé and I have very different types of hair and desires for our haircuts [I have wavy hair and want it to be a bit messy while my fiancé has pin-​straight thin hair and goes for a more conservative look] and she is able to give us both the haircuts we want. If she is able to take both of our desires and make it work, then she can definitely do the same for you.
I have never left Tracy’s chair anything but happy. I’m working on growing my hair out from being super short and each time I see Tracy she keeps that in mind while still keeping my hair in presentable shape (i.e. not letting me walk around with a mullet). She also offers free «bang» trims between haircuts so you can go and get your hair cleaned up in between cuts (especially helpful for short hair, which starts to look like messy quickly).
I would give Tracy one hundred stars if I could!

Stacey Pridham is amazing. I followed her from Method to here. She does a great job especially on bangs, asymmetrical cuts, straight hair, fine hair. She really understands how hair works and makes my hair look better than it ever has before.
I am usually not someone who drops a lot of money on a haircut, but for the past two years I have, and happily. She also throws in a free bang trim in between cuts, which is good for my college student budget.
Also, pro tip: there’s usually soda and/​or wine here if you ask for it.

I somehow managed to book a last minute cut and color with Lindsey on Saturday morning. It’s hard finding a good stylist for me because I have a lot of really heavy Asian hair that generally has no body.
But lo and behold, my hair has now been cut to mask the terrible bangs I got the last time I had my hair done, and lightened to an appropriate summer shade. The best part? I don’t look like a hoochie!
The thing about not being white is that generally, when you color your hair something other than what it is naturally, you end up looking like a crazy (think Asians with platinum blonde hair, you know the ones). It’s not flattering. Lindsey did an amazing job lightening my hair without crossing into unnatural and I’m really happy with how it came out. She even offered to lighten it up more if I decided in a few days that I wanted to go lighter, but she did it perfectly the first time.
She’s also really nice and makes good conversation, which is a relief when you’re spending a good hour with someone you’ve never met. Especially since I’m generally awkward the first couple of meetings.
Post cut/​color she suggested coming in a month for a complimentary bang trim just to see how my hair was doing overall. I really appreciate when your stylist wants to make sure your hair looks good in between cuts, and not just when you walk out the door.

Five stars for Stacey Pridham, formerly at method hair. This is also a kevin murphy salon, so you can get all the same awesome products.
Now, the actual salon itself is pretty bare bones, in a built-​out section of one of the new lofts /​condos on East 11^th. It’s next door to purple bean, so you can get coffee. But you’re not going here for fancypants treatment. You’re going to modesty because Stacey is aces with bangs, curly hair, and dude cuts. Seriously, I have crazy curly triangle poof of doom without her. Stupid business name, but don’t be hatin’ — get yourself some modesty. Really.
