History

Established in 2003.

A self-​taught designer and woodworker, and former engineer, Michael has built his business around exquisite custom furniture and woodwork, specializing in fine woodworking ranging from shoji to dining sets to home additions. Michael is current president of the Guild of Austin Artisans, and has lectured for the Japan America Society on the topics of Japanese woodworking and residential architecture history. Now in his 10^th year, he is offering a select collection of non-​custom heirloom quality production furniture and will be releasing a full retail suite in the coming year including upholstery, lighting, and an ever expanding material palette.

Business Owner

Born in Austin, Texas and raised on Lake Travis, I found my way into the woodworking shop while studying electrical engineering at Texas A&M. After a few years in the tech industry I founded Michael Yates Design and began serving the Austin area as a designer and woodworker. Originally inspired by the craft of Japan while I was working in Kyoto, my work still refers to the Japanese tradition, while also alluding to Scandinavian design and contemporary aesthetics as well.
