History

Established in 1989.

Charles is one of the pioneers of Yoga in Austin, and paved the way for Austin’s current yoga scene. Since 1989 he has taught over 20,000 students. He was one of the first Yoga teachers in the South West to establish yoga classes in government agencies, corporations (including 3M & Apple), hospitals (he started cardiac Yoga programs at Seton Hospital and the Austin Heart Hospital), Universities (he introduced yoga at UT-Austin for faculty, staff, Students, and worked with the UT Women’s volleyball, track and golf teams). Charles was the visionary behind Austin’s first Free day of Yoga, and worked hard with Sharon Moon, Donna Belk and Mary Esther Middleton to keep the tradition going, and help it spread to other cities including Dallas and Houston.

Charles is co-founder and continues to teach for the Living Yoga Program, which has graduates teaching yoga in 42 states and 14 countries.

Charles is perhaps most famous locally for his free Full Moon Yoga classes, now in its 18th year.

Meet the Business Owner

Charles F.

Business Owner

Charles has been practicing yoga since 1971 when his mother and sister took him to his first yoga class with them at age 11. His first teacher taught him to adjust the yoga to meet the needs and abilities of each student, rather than trying to force the student into the yoga.

A crippling knee injury in college when he was 19 years old ended his participation in competitive sports like wrestling, soccer and racquetball, but it also brought him back full circle to yoga which was the only physical activity left open to him. Through Yoga, over 5 years of personal practice, he slowly rehabilitated his knee sufficiently to rejoin group yoga classes, and after 18 years of personal practice and working with over a dozen yoga teachers, Charles taught his first yoga class at Maplewood Elementary school in 1989 and has not looked back.
