Dr. Tyree is fantastic! He’s kind of like Mr. Rogers as a dentist — patient, kind, and super pleasant. He’s a great problem solver and he takes the time to draw up comprehensive, individualized dental treatment plans for his patients. But sadly, his prices are pretty prohibitive for cash patients (though he deserves every penny!), and I recently tried to send my husband there, and his office is no longer taking new patients.
ETA: I’ve been informed that the new patient policy is only in effect when wait times get too long. Great news if you’d like to try Dr. Tyree!

Been to a lot of dentists and have been taken advantage of many times by them. Dr Tyree is one of the most honest and competent professionals I’ve ever visited. His reluctancy to affiliate with any insurance agency shows his true commitment to deliver honest and uninfluenced diagnosing and procedurally recommendations. Even without the insurance recommendations my payment comes to about $ 35 a visit and I gladly pay it every time.

Still going back. Dental hygienist Dorothy is five stars too!

I thought I liked my last dentist. I really did. They seemed kind and it seemed like they did a good job cleaning my teeth. After one visit with Dr. Tyree and his hygienists (Lisa cleaned my teeth; my wife got somebody else who was equally amazing), I now have a new standard.
Very gentle cleaning. No condescension. Very minimal poking and prodding. I was honestly shocked at how comfortable the whole process was.
When Dr. Tyree came in after Lisa cleaned my teeth, I figured he’d smile, poke around for 15 seconds, then leave. But he was just as great as Lisa. Thorough, unhurried, caring.
It’s no wonder his office gets such high marks. I’m generally skeptical of Unilocal reviews, and I rarely leave one, but Dr. Tyree’s practice is fantastic.

I started seeing Dr. Tyree this year and have finally landed in great dentists office. He has fixed work done by other dentists that have not held up, as well as working on new issues, all with gentleness and caring that cannot be compared to any other dentist. I usually am very sore after fillings, but not after treatment with Dr. Tyree, because he takes his time with his work. He is also planning on doing some restoration to my 2 front teeth that he is so excited about. I don’t think anyone else has ever been excited about making me look prettier. A true artist and craftsman who loves his profession.

I am so bummed to write this because I thought I found the perfect dentist office. Dr. Tyree is amazing, but I have visited them two times and have paid over $ 400. Turns out I am Out-​of-​Network, and my insurance is only covering up to 50% of the bill. It would have been nice to know this in advance, especially when I presented my United insurance card. Unfortunately, I only found out after paying $ 218 for a teeth cleaning. Typically this service is free to In-​Network patients. Regardless, i am really disappointed in how it was handled.

I adore Dr. Tyree. My mother referred me to him 10 or 12 years ago, and I’m heading back in now that I have insurance!
I’ve had many cleanings and one major procedure (my solo cavity evolved and needed a root canal).
Looking forward to seeing him again, hopefully this week!

Had an exceptional experience at Dr. Tyree’s office. There is art on the ceiling so that you are not just staring into space; the staff is incredibly kind and competent; It is right next to Taco Deli.

Got my fillings and also some sealants replaced. He even took care of a small filling on the side of my tooth that wasn’t done very well previously. I was nervous (of course) and he was kind and patient. Definitely one of the most interesting experiences I’ve had. I had no reason to be afraid or nervous I realized. Dr Tyree is very calming and he called and made sure I was doing well later that evening. Can’t beat this office! They earn their 5 stars! I don’t want many reasons to return, but I know if I do, I’m in the best hands. :) thank y’all for giving me such an awesome experience.

hard to find a good dentist, they did a great job form the cleaning to the cavity fillings. Really like this place and i hate going ot the dentist.

When I was a child, my first dentist accused my parents of telling me dental horror stories because I seemed to hate it so much. They hadn’t been, but I’ve always had extreme unease around dentists. Dr. Tyree is the first dentist that I’ve actually looked forward to going to. If you told me I would have ever felt that way about a dentist a few years ago I would have probably laughed in your face.
Dr. Tyree is everything I could have ever hoped for in a dentist, and then some. I first came to him with an odd problem. I have an unusual type of bridge, and it had come loose and fell out (and I managed to lose it in the ocean in the process). Dr. Tyree didn’t have much experience with this type of bridge, but he took the challenge with gusto. He spent a good amount of time researching to make sure that the replacement was state of the art, and even consulted with a specialist in Dallas about my situation, including getting his work peer reviewed to make absolutely sure that everything was going well. The results were fantastic — the new bridge is much better than the old one because it’s far less likely to come loose, and I’ve had no problems with it since Dr. Tyree put it in almost a year ago.
Like the other reviewers say, he obviously cares about his patients. He usually gives you a call the same night that you get any mildly invasive work done to make sure that everything is copacetic after the local anesthesia wears off. He gave me his cell number when he did some work on a Friday and was going to be gone for the weekend and told me to call him anytime over the weekend on the off chance that something felt weird. This level of support is truly amazing. All medical professionals could stand to learn from how devoted Dr. Tyree is to his pateients.

I don’t know how many people can say they love going to the dentist but I sure do.
I’ve been seeing Dr. Tyree since I was around two years old, no joke. Dr. Tyree remembers almost everything I tell him about what I’m doing with my life which I think says a lot about how much he cares for his patients. He even took the time to give me a call at home after I had my wisdom teeth taken at the oral surgeon’s office. He didn’t even do the surgery!
As for his staff, they are all great. I’ve been seeing the same hygienist for awhile and she’s great. She knows everything about my history and is gentle and thorough. They always explain what they are doing while working on your teeth and give you recommendations on what you can do at home to avoid future problems. Also on your way out they stock a goody bag with whatever you might need.
I could not be happier!

I recently went to Doctor Tyree for a filling that fell out and got infrected. i ended up needing a root canal. I have heard horror stories about root canals and got real nervous about it. There was absolutely no pain and i was confortable the entire time. His staff was extreamly nice and i would recommend Dr. Tyree to everyone i know. Amazing Docotor and i will for sure go back.

I just started a new job and asked my boss Friday, July 16^th, 2010 if he knew of any good dentist in town. He said «Dr. Jim Tyree»! So. I called the office and I got an apt. in the same Day!
Follow up: 04.14.11 Since that apt. I had an infected Root Canal, the staff stayed in the office late and took care of me the best they could before the weekend hit. I had an inplant put in in-​place of the root canal and awaiting for my tooth fitting by Dr. Tyree.

This is my first review and I’m extremely lazy, so me just writing this review should be a testament of how great my experience was.
Being a college student in Austin, it’s hard to break the habit of waiting until I visit back home to go to get a dental check-​up. I chose Dr. Tyree’s office because of all the great reviews on Unilocal,and they’re also pretty close to the UT campus. Just get on Mopac and take the TX-​2244/​Rollingwood exit.
The staff were all very friendly and helpful, I dare say, even peppy, at 10 AM. Maybe I’m just not a morning person. When I got to the office, they were more than happy to check on what services my insurance covers at the beginning of the appointment. The lady who was cleaning my teeth, I’m sorry I forgot her name, walked me through each step as she was of the process and addressed my numerous questions. She also showed me closeups of my teeth on a monitor so I could see my back molars and gave me recommendations on how to care for them. After she finished, Dr. Tyree came in to check up on my teeth. They were all extremely nice, and I have yet to see this level of service at any of the medical offices I’ve been to.

I should have written this review a long time ago — Dr. Tyree and Dr. Patton are amazing! I called their practice for a second opinion after suspecting that I was being over-​diagnosed and fleeced by another dentist.
The office is not as fancy as some, but what they lack in modern décor, flatscreen TVs on the ceiling and free espresso in the waiting rooms is made up for in leaps and bounds with their quality of care and dental expertise technology. The receptionist and hygienists were so friendly, and the office has an awesome camera that shows you close-​ups of the inside of your mouth where they can show you specific areas of plaque or decay.
For my second opinion, both Dr. Tyree and Dr. Patton examined me and concluded that I had no bone loss or periodontal disease, as Other Dentist had claimed, and that $ 2000 in root scraping procedures was totally unnecessary. What they DID find was a cavity that I had suspected but Other Dentist had missed, and that the cleaning I had be given was far from thorough. They also mentioned that while Other Dentist was overly aggressive on the treatment they had proposed for periodontitis, they were under-​aggressive on replacing sealants that had come off over time. I had new x-​rays done as well, since the ones I had faxed ended up not being useful.
Incredibly, I paid nothing for that second opinion exam, and they offered to finish cleaning my teeth for no charge. I came back in a few days to have Dr. Patton take care of the cavity and apply new sealants. Dr. Tyree even called me later that evening to make sure everything went well and that I was satisfied. I highly recommend this office for anyone looking for quality and compassionate care.
Note: I find that the office complex is confusing to navigate — they’re located in building #2. Another reviewer linked to a map which is way more helpful than Google Maps!

Just the facts:
I work for UT and I called to schedule an appointment for a routine checkup, asked what would be my out of pocket cost. I was quoted $ 30. It would be free with an in-​network dentist, but I had seen Jim before and I generally liked him.
When I arrived, I was told that my appointment was actually for the previous week. This is odd to me because I use a calendar. They told me someone had cancelled and that I could see the «other» dentist, the new partner fresh out of dental school.
Again, I liked Jim and I thought it would be fine, and I have no complaint about the service I received.
However, my understanding was that I would see Jim on the date scheduled for more or less the amount quoted. For a routine cleaning and checkup, I was charged $ 112 after insurance to see not Jim but a different dentist.

Simply put: Dr Tyree put a huge smile on my face.
After moving from Boston to Austin, I jumped on Unilocal to find a local dentist. It was difficult to choose because a few had 4.5 stars and above, but I picked Dr. Tyree because his reviews seemed amazing. Sure glad I did.
I explained I’m new to town, and need x-​rays, a cleaning, and a checkup. After the x-​rays were taken and hygienist’s cleaning (who also did a nice job), Dr. Tyree got me out of the chair and showed me the x-​rays in detail– a tiny are of bacteria that could eventually turn in to a cavity. At first I thought it was strange that my previous dentist in Boston never noticed anything, but Dr. Tyree explained it was so small that it’s easy to miss. He explained it in so much detail, that I knew he not only was looking out for my best interest, but he really cared about my teeth. (Now I understand why I felt minor chewing pain around the gums in that area a few weeks prior, which I never even told Dr. Tyree about)
I sat back down in the chair, and he took out the «magic wand», a tiny video camera used to show me the area on my tooth. On the TV monitor, we could see some black spots were the bacteria had formed in that area, and on another tooth as well. After using another fancy laser tool which determines the depth of the bacteria, he figured out that the rate of decay was slow, and probably would not be an issue for another about 1 – 3 years.
He suggested we clean out the bacteria and dark spots now and put in two small white fillings to prevent them from forming a cavity. Well since i hate drills and needles and dread the idea of a cavity, I took him up on his offer.
I returned a few weeks later for the procedure which was easy, painless, and actually kind of fun. In fact since we acted on the issue so soon, a local anesthetic wasn’t even necessary.
Afterward we looked at the video through the «magic wand,» and sure enough, the dark spots were all gone.
Amazing dentist, and I look forward to having him care for my teeth for years to come.

After my slight raving about Dr. Tyree in the review for my oral surgeon, I figured it was about time I reviewed him… if I can come up with the words.
Dr. Tyree is a great guy. Period.
He cares thoroughly about his patients. I had a splitting headache the day I went in, but I hesitate to take anything, due to the possibility of more bleeding and the possibility that the headache was caused by my unbearable TMJ problem. I was offered Motrin, but as soon as Dr. Tyree stepped into the hygenist’s space, he rubbed my head and sounded genuinely caring about it. He has a very gentle touch. He is sometimes able to squeeze people into his busy schedule for random mouth emergencies.
I think the kicker for it all (for me anyway) was that he discovered the actual cause of my TMJ pain. He is somewhat of a TMJ expert. Sadly, however, he’d need to ship me to Florida to have it taken care of. I guess I’ll just have to suffer a little bit longer. At least this suffering is way less painful then my wisdom tooth debacle.
I almost look forward to coming back. Almost. It is the dentist after all.
