Jennifer Mushtaler,MD

Dr. Mushtaler has been treating me for about 3 years now. I first started seeing her after a medical issue that required immediate attention — despite being booked, she made time that day to fit me into her schedule and see me. She was very compassionate, empathetic and she didn’t rush me. She made sure I felt okay and informed.
When I have had other issues arise, Dr. Mushtaler has been very knowledgeable and could answer my questions. She makes sure that I have been able to ask what I need to, before wrapping up and moving on to the next patient. With other doctors, that doesn’t always happen and I do appreciate one that does make that effort to educate and reassure her patients.
I find all the staff in the office polite and friendly. Every time I’ve had an appointment, I’ve been treated with respect. I like that if I need to have a procedure, they will call my insurance and verify my benefits so I know what is and isn’t covered. I know that sounds like a simple thing, but with other providers, I’ve had to do all of the legwork myself — and god knows it isn’t easy in this day and age of the Healthcare Marketplace and a million variations of health plans! I know other people reviewing here have complained about insurance issues, but as patients, it’s really on us to verify coverage and know what our plans do and don’t cover. Dealing with health insurance is a nightmare for everyone involved — I think it’s a systematic problem, not an individual physician’s problem.
If I could change one thing about the practice, it would be shorter wait times. Since I was first seen in a situation where I was squeezed into a busy day — and of course that increased wait times for other patients — I am tolerant of waiting. I would much rather the doctor take care of high priority patients that need immediate care. And we all know that babies decide when they want to be born and that will mess up anyone’s schedule. I’ve never been to a ob/​gyn that I didn’t have to wait to see. That said, there have been a few times that I’ve only been there 10 – 15 minutes before I was seen.
One fairly recent change to the office that is worth mentioning is the new patient portal. It’s really great to be able to do things online instead of making a phone call. I work in an open office environment where it’s difficult to make private phone calls so it’s a big benefit to me to be able to check on lab results or make appointments online. The email and text appointment reminders are pretty sweet too.

EXTREMELY UNIMPRESSED. I called and scheduled my appointment about three weeks ago with Dr. Mushtaler. This is my first pregnancy so I wanted to ensure I got someone who would be attentive and okay with lots of questions. I live about an hour away but I’d read good reviews so I decided the drive was worth it. Due to the drive and the fact I work, I made sure to clarify with the secretary that they would accept my insurance before I made the trip out. So I scheduled a day off and drove up this morning. Come to find out after filling out all my paper work, they DO NOT accept my insurance. I expalined to the receptionist that I made sure to ask about my insurance when I scheduled my appointment and she said they didn’t accept the plan my insurance covered, which they should have told me to begin with. So not only had I taken off work and driven all the way to Austin but now I have to do this all over again with another doctor and wait another couple weeks. I will not recommend this office to anyone. Obviously the staff is incompetent and don’t care whether or not they waste your time. The receptionist I spoke with today wasn’t at all apologetic to their initial mistake either. I could not be more unhappy with how this whole thing was handled

I delivered my two babies with Dr. Mushtaler. She was just awesome for me and my babies. Everytime I visited her for check ups, she was fun, laughed, but answered to my questions seriously and kindly. My first baby had a quite a big head and I was worried if it would hurt me too much, but Mushtaler was very professional in dealing with it so that I can have her with minimum pain. I miss her cheers! Other doctors visited me while I was in the hospital, and they were very caring and great in dealing with my postpartum pains as well.

Dr Mushtaler has delivered all 3 of my perfect babies and performed an emergency surgery on me during a miscarriage. She is a wonderful clinician and a good person.
As for wait time, yes, sometimes the waiting is long but you have to think about the nature of the business. She delivered all 3 of my babies during her normal business hours — so I know during that time there were probably people waiting. She also performs surgeries before her office hours so I can imagine those could run late too. So yes, there is waiting time but once she gets in the room I have never felt rushed, ever… even though I know she is probably playing catch up.
Now let’s talk about my deliveries — she is not soft to the hospital staff by any means in the delivery room and this is exactly why I LOVE her. St David’s North is not a teaching hospital and Dr Mushtaler is not a professor. She expects her support staff to know what’s going on and rightfully so! She is definitely a commanding force in the delivery room which in turn always made me feel confident. It is ALL about the Mom and safe delivery, in my experience. She’s not a Pediatrician so her involvement with the baby is limited. As far as her treatment of me, the patient, she has held my hand, wiped my tears, encouraged me, joked with me, been my advocate… and helped me bring 3 babies into the world. What more could you want?
I wholeheartedly recommend Dr Mushtaler!

Please be aware that she is consistently late, not politely late either. Even if you are the first patient of the day, expect a 90 minute wait. The way she spoke to the nurses during the birth of my child embarrassed me. It was to the point I apologized for her. She is currently a half hour late for my surgery, and has not returned the hospitals pages, despite being 2 floors away. She glanced at my newborn son eyes, after I asked if they looked ok. She said yes just sleepies in them, but he had blocked tear ducts. She doesn’t take time with patients, so why is she always so late? Please find another doctor.

Dr Jen has been my favorite gynecologist she is friendly, upfront, and puts you at ease. She delivered my son about a year ago, after that she recommended Mirena to me over my old birth control and I love it, much better than pills. Also her office staff is very sweet and always seem to remember you.

Update the wait times have become unacceptable. I will continue to see her until my son is born, because I think she is a great doctor. But what used to be 10 – 15 min quick check ins are now 1 – 2 hour wait times followed by a quick 5 minutes with the doctor. I want to have an appointment for a reason, and these outrageous wait times are interfering with my work or being able to pick up my son. Wasn’t a problem 3 years ago but whatever they changed I’m really not a fan.

Dr. Mushtaler is a great Dr and OB/​GYN. There are only two Dr’s in the practice so sometimes if you start to go into labor at night and your Dr isn’t on call, you’ll get the other one. I loved that fact because I met both doctors and I didn’t feel that I would have a stranger in my delivery room. Both Dr’s are really sweet and don’t make you feel stupid or rushed. When I went into labor with my daughter the first time, she actually stopped about 4 hours after she started! The Dr. said that both me and the baby were fine and that we could go home. I was never pressured into having my daughter early or felt bad for wanting to leave.
I have to admit that there have been times where I’ve waited 30 – 60 minutes to see her (usually because she is across the street delivering a baby) But when it’s always my time to see her, I don’t feel rushed and all of my questions are answered. I do think that sometimes her staff could have communicated that to the patients in the waiting room, but I think that there are a few new girls there that just need to learn the ropes.
I have had issues with the billing last year when I had my miscarrage, it seemed that their new billing system didn’t link all the patients new insurance information and I did have a few bills that were sent to the wrong insurance company and that was a hassle to say the least, but with a few phone calls, I got it fixed myself.
I had my daughter three years ago and she had a bowl movement while still in my womb. Dr. Mushtaler had NICU standing by when I delivered and she got my daughter out, suctioned and breathing great, my daughter never had to go to NICU!
I have suffered two miscarriages since having my daughter while we are still trying for our second and Dr. Mushtaler has always been straight forward with me. When I had my first miscarriage it was a missed miscarriage (meaning that the fetus had died, but your body hasn’t gotten the message yet) Dr. Mushtaler gave me my options and didn’t push me one way or the other about what I could do. She explained to me both options on either letting my body miscarry the baby on it’s own or go for the D&C. She explained the whole process, when it would happen, and answered all of my questions.
My husband was home sick this day and didn’t want to come to the office and get other pregnant women sick before we knew that the baby had passed so I was alone, but Dr. Mushtaler made me feel that I wasn’t alone. She told me how often this unfortunate situations happen and that I’m not alone and that there wasn’t anything I did to cause this.
After my D&C she came out and spoke to me and my husband (But I don’t remember that conversation at all!!) She let us know everything that happened, how it looked and let me know how long I could wait until we could try again.
She really cares about her patients and I will always recommend her to anyone that is looking for a new OB/​GYN.

The first visit with Musthaler she was very pleasant, and understanding because my boyfriend and myself waited for two hours while she delivered a baby. There are only two doctors in her office, and and she sends you across the street to another Doctor to have your sonograms done because they do not have a sonogram machine.
The second visit I was presented with billing and asked if we could use my Medicaid instead of my work insurance. Other specialists have fulfilled this request, and her office denied. I explained to her I did not like that I was denied and she shrugged her shoulders and said she did not care if I didn’t like her policies. The doctor was very rude stating that it was against the law to bill my patient portion to Medacaid, (which is what Medicaid will pay for if you have a primary insurance), and she then said, «if you want to use Medacaid I suggest you go to a community clinic because this is an obgyn office and not burger king.» (Meaning you cannot have it your way.)
I was shocked as to who this person was I was speaking with. Multiple times she cut me off in conversation defending her office’ choice to use my work insurance which I said was fine but just did not like. I’m assuming I offended her and she then became demeaning, condensing, rude, and obnoxious. She told me multiple times to go to another clinic, preferably a community one,(which I felt was insulting due to my race as an African American female). She then started to use insurance jargon she thought I did not know, and lied to me saying that if she would be breaking the law if she used my Medicaid instead of work insurance, and she lied a few times about how my insurance would drop her if I didn’t pay my patient portion which we all know is not true. I was told multiple times by billing and the Doctor that if we were behind in payments at the time the baby was due they could deny delivering my baby. I then said if we use my work insurance and pay $ 350 a month I do not want to wait an hour every time I come to see her as this happened twice. She said it’s not that long, I grabbed my things, left her office as I do not want this type of person caring for me or my child.
I went back later and read my chart notes put online, and she completely twisted what happened to make things seem she was nice and sweet, and I was irate and angry all because of billing. I brought my boyfriend so he witnessed how calm I was talking to her, and we were both shocked at how she twisted the story. I am very disappointed because I actually liked her the first meeting and had high hopes.

A couple of years ago I was looking for a new gynecologist and saw all of the great Unilocal reviews about Dr. Mushtaler so I decided to give her a try. Seriously– best thing I’ve found on Unilocal to this day. Going to the gyno can be one of the most uncomfortable and awkward experiences in a woman’s life, but Dr. Mushtaler and her staff actually make it enjoyable. That might sound creepy, but it’s true.
I’ve never had to wait more than 10 – 15 minutes before being called in for my appointment. They always work with my crazy work schedule when I need to reschedule at the last minute.
I know she’s a doctor, but I don’t know how it can be so easy for her to make small talk during a pap smear. She does though, and she always remembers what’s going on in my life! Dr. Mushtaler is so friendly and puts me at ease every time I have an appointment. She’s also very helpful and knowledgeable anytime I have a question. My favorite part about Dr. Mushtaler– she’s not judgmental AT ALL. My old gynecologist was incredibly judgmental about everything. I think of all career fields, doctors should be the least judgy; especially any gynecologist. Dr. Mushtaler definitely is not and will answer any of your questions. She’s very easy to talk to and gives great advice.
They also started using an online portal to get tests results, book appointments, etc and it’s been extremely easy to use. Bonus points!

It just doesn’t get better than Dr. Mushtaler. I feel so blessed to have found her! She is so comforting and doesn’t make anything awkward. Her staff is also wonderful. Plus, how many docs give you chocolate after a pap?

Dr. Mushtaler is great. Hmm… why is guy writing a review for a gynecologist you are thinking!
Well, I was with my wife at every appointment and my review reflects her views as well. Dr. Mushtaler is always in a good mood and cheers you up. We just had our first baby two weeks ago. The care throughout the pregnancy and the delivery experience was great. Never had any issues with billing.
For people who are complaining about long wait occasionally… yes we had to wait a long time for one or two appointments. Even though the office staff never explained to us what was going on but if you use your brain a little bit you can figure it out. She is a gynecologist and she has to deliver baby’s at the hospital across the street. She doesn’t know what time the baby will come so occasionally she has to run to the hospital in the middle of everything when she gets a call from the nurse at the hospital. My son was born at 12:30 PM and it would have taken her at least 30 – 40 minutes to come to the hospital, deliver the baby, do the paperwork and get back to the clinic across the street. In the mean time, anybody who was in the office probably got delayed. I think this is unavoidable considering her line of work. I wish the staff was more proactive in informing the patients that she is running behind but the patients should understand as well.

Great staff, okay Dr, terrible billing.

The doctor is Great! I wish i had shared with her my dreadful experience in 2009. I felt bad at the time and didn’t want anyone to lose their job!
One of the nurses was so aweful that I have yet to forget! After one of my visits with the doctor– after the baby was born– I decided to take a walk and have lunch in their nice little court yard area– old location across the street… since it was around lunch time, this nurse saw us downstairs and decided to have a little chat… made me sick to my stomach… this young Hespanic lady decided to go on and on and share in great detail the news about «a mom with postpartum depression and what she had done… in Dallas». This horrible, unprofessional, sick person makes me wonder how they interview some of their staff! I believe she moved with Dr. Mushtaler to her new office. With that much «makeup» on her face this nurse needs to reconsider her career!

I never enjoyed a pap smear so much in my life.
Is that weird?
Then you haven’t seen Jennifer Mushtaler. She’s personable, warm, and down to earth. Not invasive, not too quick, and minimal discomfort. I mean, a perfect pap smear just doesn’t exist, but this came close.
I’ll see you next year, fo sho.

Struggling between giving them three stars or four. They’d be more like a three and a half stars but that’s not an option.
The ladies in the office were so fun and personable. It was my first visit there and I really enjoyed talking with them.
What I didn’t enjoy was the looooong wait.
I waited in the lobby for over a hour, without an update, before being escorted back to the exam room. In totality, the appointment took two hours. Ugg.
Dr. Mushtaler has a lot of personality which is great. I laughed out loud when she mentioned that pelvic exams are uncomfortable because ovaries are similar to mens’ balls. I gave a relieved, internal «thank you» that my ‘balls’ on the inside of of my body. Not sure how men aren’t walking around in underwear made out of armor.
The only thing that put me off during my time with her was she didn’t ask enough investigative questions. Maybe this was because her nurse did such an incredibly thorough history with me, but I’m used to a more in depth «how ya doin’, where ya at, what’s the haps?» type of appointment. Especially since it’s only once a year and I was a first time patient.
Overall, it was a good experience with the staff and Doctor, but the wait was borderline unforgivable and that’s what truly stands out in my mind. My time is important too.

I found Dr. Mushtaler over three years ago and have been seeing her ever since for my annual. This year, I got pregnant. Dr. Mushtaler will also be delivering our baby in January, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with the care, understanding, and expertise that Dr. Mushtaler has shown. Even us «new parents-​to-​be» feel comfortable and prepared for our upcoming birth, thanks in large part to Dr. Mushtaler and staff answering all our questions and properly preparing us for the impending unknown.
Also, to just point out Dr. Mushtaler’s expertise in OBGYN, I’m a Type 1 Diabetic. Under her care (and my excellent endocrinologist), I’ve had zero complications throughout my pregnancy thanks to her careful watch. I expect to have a healthy baby boy and (fingers crossed) an uncomplicated birth.

Love Dr. Mushtaler! I have been here a couple of times. The staff is always very nice, professional, and overall AWESOME. And the Doc is so sweet and she REALLY listens to what my needs are. Thank you guys for being wonderful!

I love Dr. Mushtaler, she is awesome. I’ve been seeing her for three years now. She’s delivered both of my children during that time and been a pleasure at every appointment. She’s super sweet and will fight for you with the hospital staff when they threaten to send you home because your in labor but not dialated enough (Yeah NAMC I’m talkin to you!)
With my second baby she put me on bed rest two weeks early because she could see the toll the pregnancy was having on me and was concerned for my well being. Dr. Mushtaler really cares and i’m so glad to have her as my doctor.

I’ve been going to Dr. Mushtaler for four years now. At first it was just for routine gynecologic exams. Then once I had to have a LEEP procedure to cut out abnormal tissue in my cervix. I’ve had no problems since then. In October, I found out I was pregnant and I’m still happy to have Dr. Mushtaler as my doctor. I’m proud that she will be the one delivering my baby in June. And, I agree with the previous post… she makes you feel comfortable and secure. Not to mention, everyone in her office rocks. Overall, you’ll feel at ease when visiting Capital OB/​GYN Associates of Texas.

Really, is any woman actually comfortable when they go for their annual pelvic exam? I sure as hell ain’t, but Dr. Mushtaler makes me feel as comfortable as I possibly could in that situation, unless I was given anesthesia beforehand.
She is now on her fourth office in the Austin area, and I have followed her around the city, since 2006. I’d been experiencing a hormonal imbalance since 2000, and had seen two gynos (one in 2000, one in 2001, both in Dallas), neither of which had a clue of how to cure my problem. I was given oral birth control by both gynos, and that shit did nothing to help me. Then I moved here, and I figured I should just live with the problem, so I did for the next five years.
Started getting the birth control patch from Planned Parenthood in 2005, for obvious reasons, and it didn’t help with my hormonal problem. I really didn’t think it would, and that was not a factor in my decision to use the patch. But I hated the patch anyway, for several reasons.
In 2006, I decided to see a new gyno about some other form of birth control, and to revisit my hormonal imbalance malady. So I saw Dr. Mushtaler when she was located in the Seton NW hospital. One visit I had, I explained my symptoms, told her I needed birth control for sexual reasons since I was unimpressed by the patch, and she said, «Have you ever thought about trying Nuvaring?» I’d only heard of it, but had no idea how it worked. She explained it to me, and wrote a prescription, and I was wowed by the results. Cleared up my hormonal problem in an instant. And it’s a lot more tolerable than the stupid patch is. No more patch adhesive stuck to my bum; no more worry about it coming loose; etc. I mean, I may as well have stapled the damn things to my ass.
And she’s a great conversationalist. I’ve been to other gynos who never say a word to you (except, «Relax!») during the pelvic exam, but Dr. Mushtaler always remembers me and what I’m going through in my life. Last year, she asked how things were going with jobs. At that time, they were great, but no longer. She remembers what man/​men I’m seeing, and asks friendly questions about them. I’m talking about, «How does he treat you? What sort of stuff does he like?» Obviously, the has-​he-​been-​tested question comes up, but I can always answer that I know what I need to know.
I’ve honestly never felt this good about any gyno. I legitimately despise doing the annual pelvic exam, but if I’ve gotta do it, I’m glad Dr. Mushtaler is the one doing it.
