Such a randomly cool spot. So many things fit inside this store, it’s kind of amazing. Lots and lots upon lots of single beers. Super impressive!

this is an awesome convenience store with tons of beer and vegan stuff. and i mean TONS of beer. you can buy lots of single cans for $ 2. the people who work there are also super nice.

They are commonly known as «The Flag Store» to locals, so yeah, same spot. A solid neighborhood convenience store that is open until 12am on weekdays and 1am on Friday-​Saturday. They carry literally every beer one may legally sell in Texas, and have a solid wine selection. In terms of Ice Cream, they have both Steve’s and Sweet Ritual, my two faves and one totally vegan the other with non-​dairy options, as I get enough milk in the dozens of lattes I rock daily. This store also carries the ballerest mixers you can put in your coffees or cocktails, Mixology 201, a shameless plug I admit as I co-​own the company. Did I mention this hot new coffee and cocktail mixer company, handle-​bottled with love in Austin, TX, known as Mixology 201? They are taking mixers to another level, and Hyde Park Market has it, if I neglected to mention, you know, fyi. Hyde Park Market is wicked expedient compared to finding a spot at HEB, then wandering the masses, waiting in line, and finding your car and battling traffic and speed bumps to get out. Here you just wander in, mosey around, saunter to the cash register, and be about your business.

More of a ⁹⁄₁₀ stars review, but I rounded down. This place has an amazing selection of alcohols, foods, and miscellaneous things, many you can’t seem to find at a typical store. They have amazing gas prices outside… found it to be around 50 cents per gallon cheaper than another location found off of Oltorf… that’s a lot of money saved for someone who works on the roads such as myself. They do, unfortunately, have steep prices on everything else inside. I remmeber once buying a small container of ice cream for 7 dollars in here. That’s my only complaint, this place is really amazing overall. Nice staff too, seems to care about making sure you find everything okay.

We heard about this place from the beer guy at Twin liquors and decided to cruise in. This review is purely based on the beer selection which was pretty incredible for the size of the market. You can create your own 6 pack which is cool but the prices are definitely a bit steeper than the single cans/​bottles at HEB and Whole Foods. The layout of the market was somewhat chaotic so don’t get too overwhelmed when you are in there. Another plus is a big bulk candy section when you walk in. With all this said, we will come back when we are in the mood for trying a variety of beers but it won’t become our go to spot to grab our favorite 6 pack.

Best gas station/​convenience store ever with the exception of Buc-​ees. Tons of beer and wine. Chocolate, candy, tobacco, all kinds of stuff. A lot of it local. Wow.

Great selection of beer, ice cream l, kombucha, candy, and other weird stuff. Prices are Horribly high. 8 bucks for a 4.50 pint of ice cream… That’s just one example. Be prepared to spend a lot. 2 stars for the amount of stuff they crammed in that little place.

I like this market. The place can be very overpriced and to be honest, I don’t trust any of the candies/​nuts in the dispensers because of one terrible incident that happened to me. Despite that, I love the ambiance of this place. I lived right across the street from it and it closed until midnight, so it was perfect for emergency snack runs. The wine and beer selection is absolutely beautiful. It is actually a magical experience because the whole store is like a maze with tightly packed shelves filled with anything you could imagine. There is always classical music playing, making it all feel like a dream. I can dramatically look through wine selections as intense classical music plays in the background. The owners are all very sweet and I became a regular. I loved buying milk or eggs or tomatoes and hearing the cashier ask me «So what are you making for dinner tonight?» I will miss living across the street from this place but I am glad I got the chance to make multiple trips to this adorable, unique little market.
P. S. Look at these soda flavors. Also, don’t buy their phone chargers even if it’s an emergency. It will stop working within 10 minutes of using it.

DONT COME HERE. So I was always curious about this place, and I ended up buying those cute flags you can put on your mirror in the car.
The suction cup didn’t work, and almost literally 30 seconds after I left, I came back and asked if I could switch. The man goes «I wish you didn’t open it» as if it were my fault, and refused to switch it out. Or even give me a new suction cup.
How on earth does anyone not open a product to test it??? The woman who helped me watched as this happened, and didn’t help. I bought 3 flags, each over 5 dollars.
This business has no integrity. If they aren’t willing to put up with the expected cost of defective products, then get out of business.
Don’t come here. Everything is unique, but if you don’t like it – don’t expect a refund, much less an exchange. They don’t give receipts either, so good luck buy all their expired food.

I don’t get why people still rave about this place. I will look at it from a beer buyers perspective.
Yes, they have a large singles wall. Yes, they have a large selection of beer. Yes, they have been around for a long time.
With that said, I think the high ratings come from not knowing better and people who have always shopped there in the past.
They gouge on prices all the time. They do not know their beer and how long beer should be good for. You can find way out-​of-​date IPAs there all the time. You will be overcharged from similar stores (think other gas station/​specialty stores that are NOT Central Market or Specs). When they try charging almost double for Prairie limited releases due to them being «rare» compared to other stores, you know the type of place you are dealing with.
They will gouge customers because a beer is «rare»…they do not care about who they annoy. They survive based on people not knowing better. Every 6 pack in there is $ 2 – 3 more bucks than anywhere else in town. And people still will walk in and say how great it is. There are much better places. Please spend your money at a place that is not trying to screw their customers.

So, if you’ve been paying attention and have read previous reviews, you know this much: the Flag Store (no one local ever calls it by its long and generally misleading name, «Hyde Park Market, Deli, and Organic Grocery») sells about 1,000 different beers (although it does not, as they sometimes claim, carry every available beer in Austin); it also sells flags, local soap, craft soda, and other weird and sometimes necessary oddities, and does so in a labyrinthine space that defies the laws of physics based on the view from outside.
All of this is true, of course, and weird, and wonderful. How many stores can you go to for a Jester King Farmhouse Ale and a plumbing snake with a grabber at the end to unplug your apartment’s AC condensation drain? Probably not that many, if we’re honest.
It is also true that you get to listen to Chopin while you shop, and that the owner dude speaks like seven languages and is really cool.
It is, unfortunately, additionally true that every bomber, six-​pack, and twelve-​pack of beer; every esoteric hardware item; everything that makes the place seem as much a museum/​cabinet of curiosities as a store, is priced 25% more than other local places where you can get the same stuff. Unless I’m in the mood for some recondite brew that I can’t find anywhere else, I’m just not going to pay $ 17.99 for a $ 13.99 box of beer. Their prices are $ 2-​$ 4 over minimum retail on each and every beer they sell.
So go to the Flag Store, admire its pandimensional awesomeness, buy a beer that you’ve never heard of in all of your life. But realize that you’re there for a show as much as a store, and that they know it and charge admission.

Cooler after cooler after cooler of great beer — stuff I’ve never even heard of, much less have seen elsewhere (and that never happens to me — not to totally toot my own horn, but I kinda know a thing or two about zee cervezas :)) Don’t forget to look UP — there are even more great beers lining the top of the chill cases. It’s a maze with beer around every corner.
At the end of that hops and grain funhouse… ice cream! Nirvana.
Apparently the only beer they *don’t* stock is exactly the one we were looking for — Austin Beerworks Heavy Machinery Wet Hop — so that was kind of a bummer. And the prices are way high — nearly double — on things that ARE sold elsewhere.
(A random dude later in the day was giving us a local perspective on the bottle shop lay of the land, warned me away from «The Flag Shop» and its exorbitantly high prices — I didn’t snap til just now that I had already been there and come to that same conclusion on my own.. duh! I *had* been admiring the flag-​lined entrance. Lol, thanks fur putting my mind right, Unilocal!)
Definitely worth a visit for uniqueness and oddball beers, if you’re not opposed to shelling out a little extra dough for them. And ice cream.. GO for the ice cream.

This place (The Flag Store, as the locals call it) is a hoot. With a beer buzz and a full belly, I entered the market and was immediately greeted by incense and locally-​made soaps. Having never been in the store, I took a left and walked the long way to the beer fridges (my reason for being in the store). On my journey to the beer, there were so many things displayed for purchase: some familiar, some not familiar, some odd, but all good. The best part of the experience was hearing Chopin on public radio. It was a surreal experience. I wanted to laugh out loud and receive an agreement from someone that this was a silly experience; however, I was solo, so I just giggled to myself and bought a french-​casked beer.

This place is amazing. The selection of beers, ice cream, incense, candy, pretty much anything you could want. The family that owns it is incredibly friendly too. The «Flag Store» is my favorite neighborhood store for all my basic needs. Dear Santa, please get all my stocking stuffers from here…

Best and most expensive ice cream selection in Austin. They’ve got Jennis’s, Coolhaus, Sweet Ritual and Frozen Macaroons. The selection changes and they seem to be adding new brands/​flavors.

Love this place!!! Took a friend in and when he saw the beer selection, he just stopped in his tracks and said, «are there angels singing?» The first time I stopped in I got gas and the grabbed some items inside. When I was pulling out of the parking lot the mom (so sweet) chased me down… She realized she had charged me for someone else’s gas and she needed to give me a $ 12 credit!!! Don’t think there are many places that would chase you down to give you money back!

So I swung by after a long bike ride, based in the recommendation of a co worker. I was hoping to get a good beer, then head up to do an online meeting.
I was blown away with how awesome this place is. Period. I was almost late for the conference because I was checking it all out. The beer selection was overwhelming, I ran through my mind trying to come up with obscure beers and they had them all. I ended up with some deep Ellis «Dallas Blonde», which is great post ride «goes down easy» and all. I also picked up a delicious curry chicken sandwich.
They have Maine Root Sodas on tap, and just about everything on earth in the bottle.

Yes, it’s way overpriced. You should just go to whole foods, really. But this place is magical. It seems to exist in non-​euclidean space. I’m not sure how they fit so much stuff into this tiny store. The beer selection is amazing.
The cons are, again, that the beer is way overpriced.
I’ve actually taken out-​of-​town guests here just because it’s hard to believe a gas station can be this cool.
When I move away from the area and can no longer drunkenly walk here from my apartment it’ll be a tragic loss but it’s not the sort of place I’d regularly visit but for my proximity to it.

Gas is typically more reasonable at this station than others in this area. Also holy smokes have you seen their beer selection??? They have a surprisingly wide array of beers that you can make an awesome 6 pack out of.
The only problem is I always seem to be getting gas here so early, the idea of beer doesn’t cross my mind. it’s a great afternoon stop, plus some good local Austin snacks in here.
The only downside is the prices on indoor items. They’re a little higher than grocery stores but worth the occasional drop in.

Every time I even think about buying Bud Light here I feel guilty, because they have possibly the greatest selection of beers in town. Serpentine rows of beers writhe off in strange directions far into the distance, more bottles than seems physically possible. Each new turn in the labyrinth (labeerinth?) reveals new hard-​to-​find gems, and even to exit the maze you’re confronted with yet more sections of goodies — artisanal chocolates, wacky products, gourmet sandwiches, and the like.
This place is too expensive to visit regularly (you’re a fool if you buy Bud Light here), but if you’re looking for an off-​beat Dogfish Head vintage and nowhere else seems to have it, Hyde Park might be your best bet.

This place has all the beer! My 2 Beer Bros and I call this place Beer Mecca.
Whip In, Spec’s, Twin Liquors, and Sunrise Mini Market do too but where HPM surpasses them is in the amount of singles. I’ve seen 12oz bottles of stuff I’ve only seen in bombers elsewhere. This fact is what sets it apart from all those above
Prices are a bit high (e.g. $ 18 for a Jester King bomber, $ 4 – 6 for most singles) which is the only downside. Can’t comment on the six pack pricing.
So, for making mixed sixers: this is the place.
And friendly staff too!

Is it weird that I kind of like going to the gas station here? Okay, so I don’t like how often I need to go to the gas station. I’d gladly hang a jolly roger or six from my car’s antenna if they’d sponsor my adventures in amateur hooning.
Honestly, though, this is a lovely store full of wonderful things.
This place has a little bit of everything. Food, drinks, hardware, office supplies, candy, etc., etc., etc. I found varieties of Amy’s soups that I didn’t even know existed. They have local munchies from places like Tom’s and the Green Cart. The beer selection is beyond extensive, and that they have build-​your-​own six packs if you’d like a variety pack. There’s a great deal of cokes, teas, kombucha, wine, and other potable potables as well. There are cane sugar cokes I’ve never even heard of at this place. And the candy? They’ve got everything from the usual standbys to gourmet chocolate to sweets you thought were only available overseas.
It’s a bit jumbled up inside, but it’s well worth the time to wander through every nook and cranny and marvel at the variety of stuff that you didn’t know you needed in this little building.
There’s a 10-​cent/​gallon discount if you buy a certain amount of stuff inside – excluding alcohol, cigarettes and lottery tickets. The prices for gas are usually pretty reasonable, especially considering that it’s a Shell in the middle of Hyde Park. They take all the usual credit cards – at the pump, too!
Then again, I find myself walking inside for some tea anyway because it’s a fabulous store and the staff couldn’t be friendlier. I feel like the guys behind the counter get to know their regulars here.
The pumps can get a bit busy (and mind the drop-​off at the edge of the concrete!), so if you’re going inside and it’s packed, it’s always a good idea to move your car and park in front or to the side so other folks can have a space to get gas.
