I must admit, the place is better run now that it is under new ownership, but the food choices could use some improvement. I do like the fact that they have yogurt with fresh fruit as a breakfast item sometimes(wish it was available more often even it is a bit pricey), and their pre-made salads are okay. I also like that if you don’t want one of their pre-made sandwiches with mayo, they will make you a fresh one with a different condiment. I just wish there would be more baked options and less fried or casserole type of foods. The prices are pretty high for the quality/value — but high prices are the norm for anything downtown.

Downtown lunch options are vast; however, for someone who spends 9 hours a day, 5 days a week in the area, I actually don’t end up venturing out too often. Why? Because Home Run Café, conveniently(well, convenient for me at least) located on the first floor of the Stephen F. Austin building, has captured my heart… err or stomach. Recently taken over by Lynn and Dewayne Sparks, this cafeteria comes out with some pretty good grub, and the staff is always happy and friendly. If you’re a state employee with a badge or are lucky enough to have a state employee friend, it is definitely worth trying for either breakfast or lunch. Before: Bring a couple bucks for breakfast or $ 6 for lunch. Card are ok too. Likes: vanilla nut coffee, banana pudding!!, chicken biscuit with gravy, potato and bacon breakfast taco!(get jalapenos and salsa), chicken enchiladas(I ask for onions and jalapenos on top), eggplant parmasean, fried zucchini and/or squash!!, fried okra, Greek salad dressing with feta and olives, asparagus Mehs: mashed potatoes, chicken fried chicken, breakfast sausage(too greasy for my liking), beef stroganoff After: Go say hello to your old frienemy, the treadmill.
