Gutierrez Gabriel Jr Emilio, MD

I have called them 8 times as of today for blood work results and I continue to receive messages of «he’s with a patient. He’ll call you back», «he’s in a meeting» or «he’s gone for the day.» Each time they promise he will call me back and doesn’t. I have been his patient for many years and never before had this problem. I wish they were up front and actually follow up. I am so disappointed with this practice.

I cannot say enough great things about Dr G. He has been my doctor for 14 years now and he is the best. He actually listens to what is wrong and even tells me if my problem is out of his area of expertise (depression or anxiety). He will always fit me in, no matter how busy it is that day. He is such a great doctor-​almost all my siblings have him as their doctor, as well!
The past few years have been hard, money-​wise, so he always gives me a discount because I do not have insurance. There was one time when it felt like an elephant was sitting on my chest and he was so concerned he did an EKG-​but I was so surprised when he did not even charge me! Like I said-​he is a good, old fashioned, doctor who is always looking out for the well-​being of his patients.

Hard to get a hold of. Bad communication. Would not see me because my humana card only showed my dental, even though the same number is for medical, then wouldn’t schedule another appointment with me.

I have been going to this office since I moved to Austin over ten years ago. I have always had a good experience. I am very fond of him because he always takes the time to makes sure he understands exactly what is going on. He evaluates my entire history and listens to all my symptoms. He never seems rushed or stressed. He informs me of what is going on and why. I like to be involved in my own health so I find it assuring.
I like his front office girl. She has been there as long as I’ve been going there. When I call to schedule she always gets me in at a time that works with my schedule and if I need anything she always calls back right away. His nurse is awesome. I just love her. She is always nice, caring and makes sure I feel comfortable.

My children have been patients of Dr. Gutierrez for many years. I find him and his entire staff to be incredibly professional, courteous, respectful, and excellent caretakers. I have some differences of opinion with some established medical practices and procedures, and take a cautious approach to certain medications and indications. Dr. Gutierrez has always been respectful of my choices as a parent, and at the same time provides good information to counter my views without being confrontational with me. He has gained the trust of my somewhat anxious son, and has a natural tendency to honor the wishes of both parents and children in all facets of his care.
Additionally, his staff is WONDERFUL. I frequently hear them referring to clients by name, and the entire environment there is relaxed, but professional. The head nurse is HILARIOUS, which is a very useful trait when dealing with anxious children (and adults.)
I’m so glad I happened to stumble into the best-​kept secret practice in Austin many years ago via insurance necessity. At this point, I wouldn’t switch doctors even if I had to pay out of plan fees.

Let me preface this review by saying that I agree with Karen R. & have had not so good experiences at Dr. Gutierrez’s office, especially with his staff.
Sorry if this is a long review, I tried to keep it short.
So I go in December to set up a plan/​history with Dr. G. about a perscription that was no longer being offered to me for free. I talked with Dr. G. about what I needed to do for the year, the fact that once I have this specific service, I have to stick with him. So OK, I’ll do that. He makes notes in my file of my plan, and when I have to start my perscription. Two months later, I go to my local pharmacy and set up my perscription. In his office, Dr. G. told me to simply take in my ID and insurance ID, and present it to the pharmicist, and g from there. In reality, I do that and the pharmicist tells me that I need my perscription papers, in hand or sent because what Dr. G. told me to do is not what actually happens. Again, that’s fine, I’ll just call his office.
I call his office, tell the receptionist my problem, and ask if she can send over the info while I have the pharmacy info present. She begins to tell me that she has no idea what I’m talking about, and cannot find a file with my name, and says «Hold on» before abruptly putting me on hold. I’m assuming his head nurse comes on the phone and asks me the situation, so again I tell her what is going on, and what Dr. G. told me to do to pick up my perscription. She begins to say «Dr. G. is not allowed to give that perscription unless other services have been taken care of beforehand». I tell her «no, I was in his office this past December and we discussed it, check my file because he made notes. I’m doing what he told me to do when time came to it». The nurse starts arguing with me, and says that I’m lying because he would never issue a perscription without the necessary services beforehand, to which I could not believe what I just heard. I’m lying because I’m doing what your boss told me to do? That’s it! She, like the receptionist, abruptly puts me on hold, and Dr. G. gets on the phone. I try telling him what’s going on and he keeps cutting me off by saying «The more you talk, the longer we have to wait for your perscription to be available». Over and over… I simply told him fine, I hung up the phone, and I haven’t gone back since.

My 76 year old mother and her ‘boyfriend’ were visiting me in Austin, from northern Ohio. My mom’s friend had a bad cough and decided he needed to see a doctor. Since I live in Hyde Park, they checked on Dr. Gutierrez, and he had time to see him the same day. According to my mom and her friend, Dr. Gutierrez was very thorough and helpful. They returned a few days later on a Friday for a follow up visit, and the doctor ordered a chest x-​ray. The doctor called on Saturday, to discuss the results. We were very happy with Dr Gutierrez medical care, especially considering these were visitors, and not regular patients.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Gutierrez for over 18 years. I have a pre-​med background, so I feel I have the educational expertise to evaluate his ability. He is one of the few doctors I’ve met who actually takes the time to sit and listen to your problems. He explains treatment options very clearly, and therefore treatment becomes a product of a meeting of the minds, a sort of collaborative effort as he does not talk down to his patients, but respects them as people and treats them with dignity.
Yes, I’ve had problems with his staff from time to time. Sometimes I have to really push to get a refill done. But the people he has on staff now seem to be doing better than those in the past, and, frankly, I’m not there to see the staff, I respect Dr. G’s expertise. I’ve gone to doctors in the past who made horrible mistakes by misinterpreting lab results. Thank God I found Dr. G who is VERY thorough and meticulous, never making a mistake with my health.
I highly recommend him as one of the best family practice docs in Austin. And his fees are very reasonable as well.

Just before posting this review, I found a new primary care physician. A week ago I received a registered letter in the mail informing me that Dr. Gutierrez was dropping me as a patient.
