Greenling works with a network of over 100 local farmers and food artisans to bring you the very best local food. All the products we carry are either local and sustainably grown, or certified organic. No GMOs, chemicals, or synthetic pesticides in sight!

Unlike other food delivery services in town, Greenling doesn’t charge membership fees or require a subscription. All of our deliveries are completely customizable, and there’s no long term commitment or fees. And did we mention? Delivery is always free!

History

Established in 2005.

Greenling was built from the ground up around the simple idea that people need access to fresh, nutritious food in a way that does not damage our environment. We started in Austin in 2005, working with a tiny network of local farmers. The award-​winning combination of a high-​tech business centered around one of the basics of our lives, our food, quickly grew into a thriving community of people supporting this simple, but amazing idea.

Today our customers support hundreds of local farmers and food artisans. Together, they save over 10,000 gallons of gas each year by choosing grocery delivery over driving to the store! Our delivery area now stretches from Georgetown to Austin to San Antonio, with just about every city in between. Business Owner

Mason Arnold has been a Sustainability pioneer and serial entrepreneur since graduating from The University of Texas at Austin in 2001 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Greenling’s customers aren’t the only ones who have noticed Mason’s passion for Sustainability. Mason has been recognized as a finalist for Technology Entrepreneur of the Year by Austin Under 40 and the BigAustin Rookie of the Year Entrepreneurship award.

Mason pretty much works all the time, because he loves what he does, but in the few windows when he’s not working he likes to spend time with his wife, Mylie, who has her own business, btw, called Go Dance. Mason’s not hard to spot when he’s out and about primarily because he drives around in a Prius with a 5′ banana on top of it.

My boyfriend and I share a car which he takes to work everyday while I work from home. Since he gets home so late the last thing either of us wants to do is get in the car and go grocery shopping, so when I found out about Greenling I was thrilled. We started using them about 6 months ago and there were a few weeks where things were sold out/​out of stock and I wouldn’t get a call or notification in advance that they didn’t have it. For example something like whole milk OOS, that’s fine I’d be happy with some 2% or whatever but the bf has gotta have his milk one way or another. After emailing with them a few times they were kind enough to call me in advance of my weekly delivery in case anything was not available. Julia (the customer service person) is super sweet, always on top of her game and has made sure to make me feel like a valued customer no matter what.
I’m usually really impressed by the quality of the food/​veggies. As is typical with organic food sometimes it’s smaller or shaped differently than what you see in a grocer, but it’s the real deal so perceived imperfections are par for the course. The meat is delicious! My favorite cuts to get from them are: ribeyes, pork shoulder/​roast, pork chops, chicken thighs, bacon, breakfast sausage, hot dogs (yes, organic hot dogs). Their seasonal vegetable options are awesome; it has really taught me how to appreciate the seasons (I miss you sunchokes!!!). My only regret is that they stopped carrying wines and that they’re missing some kitchen staples (need more spices, baking mixes [would like to see pizza dough], crackers, and maybe some frozen veggies). I’m also a low carber, so more low-​carb options (like those awesome almond flour tortillas!) would be great.
Regardless, I’ll be ordering from this company as long as they continue to grow and expand their offerings. Can’t comment on their meal kits but I’m sure those are great too. Also, I have looked at and tried Farmhouse Delivery but who really has their meals planned out 2 weeks in advance? I’m also too picky for a regular CSA program, so thank you again Greenling for being such an awesome service!

Note: I decided to finally write this review after realizing I forgot to confirm my order for today over the weekend. I emailed them less than 24 hours ago to say I messed up and was contacted shortly after to say they were able to get my order thru (minus a few things of course since their ordering schedule is pretty tight). Well the entire order showed up as usual around 10AM today. Couldn’t appreciate their customer service more!

I love the concept of having groceries waiting for me when I come home and since Greenling delivers to the New Braunfels area I decided to give them a shot.
I have ordered every week for about 8 weeks, and here is my experience…
First-​I ordered the Paleo 3 day meal kits every week-​along with smoothie kits and a few side items, the delivery was on time and all ingredients were fresh and easy to prepare.
My biggest ongoing gripe is that there are ingredients missing about 50% of the time, this last week it was the lettuce that was the main part of the meal-​another time it was a can of organic tomatoes-​another time it was Portobello mushroom caps for the Portobello pizzas… kind of a bummer when that’s your main dish and you have to improvise.
I’ve called twice about this, and frankly I didn’t bother this last time because it is embarrassing for me as they are so friendly and super apologetic about the mistake each time.
I’m not sure what the issue is-​I noticed I usually get delivery into my area around 7 – 8 p. m, so maybe my stuff gets mixed up with someone else’s.
Overall the idea is great-​and I love how convenient it is, but I think I will look for another company because for the money I spend I should be confident everything will be there when I open the box.
Also-​the few paleo meal kits get kind of boring after you have had them a few time-​a bit more variety would be great.

I love the idea but I do believe economy of scale has yet to get anywhere close to making it competitive.
1. Driscoll organic strawberries, regular price, in Austin: HEB-​$ 3.99, Whole Foods-​$ 5.99, Greenling-​$ 9.29
2. Asparagus, organic, regular price (same order as above): $ 3.25, $ 4.29, $ 9.99
They are gonna want to mention how things are per pound but it doesn’t really matter as a tub of strawberries is the same size everywhere especially when it is very specifically Driscoll’s tub of strawberries.
I put my shopping cart on ‘Local’ and I got tomatoes from Mexico.
They drop the stuff off in green plastic boxes. For apartment dwellers, this may not be too convenient as they take up space. Know this ahead of time. Lot’s of reviewers have mentioned this.
All and all I found Greenling to be expensive and I still end up needing to go to Whole Foods anyway so why not go just once and get it all done? Well, I want to eat organic local farm fresh stuff. That is paramount to me. I guess it’s off to the farmer’s markets then.
Lastly, Greenling did have some good, fresh, nice, local stuff, too (especially the spinach) just not enough variety for me. And then there was the price thing.

I hate grocery shopping more than driving in Austin traffic (though they are both parallel experiences IMO). I have issues with people who are pushy, reckless, impatient/​rude, and an all around inconsiderate asshole. Who wants to spend their time like this?
Greenling takes ALL of that away! They add convenience, affordability (considering said convenience), flexibility, freshness, healthiness, and of course you are supporting many local farms and businesses. They have tip-​top customer service, too.
For years we got the Local Box which is a great deal, except when you get potatoes and corn 3 times in a row. But this just caused us to move on to bigger and better things: pre-​prepared healthy meals!
Pre-​prepared meals are the next best thing to having a personal chef if you ask me. Everything is delivered super fresh, healthy, pre-​measured, pre-​cut, and grouped with cooking instructions for 2, 3 or 5 days. Words cannot express how absolutely delicious these meals are (and the website pictures do them no justice). The joy these meals bring me as I prepare and eat them makes me feel like I am breaking all the rules by totally kicking grocery shopping assholiness to the curb.

I used to get home delivery from Greenling. After a few months it didn’t made a lot of sense to get 14 _​_​_​_​_​_​_​_​_​_​ (beets, gourds, etc) when you’re in a household of one. I kept the box in the event I ever want to start back up. Which is a difficult decision to come by.
In the meantime I enjoy the Greenling boxes delivered to my office. The stuff’s not bad: organic yogurts with fruit and granola, nuts and dried fruit, etc. We all seem pretty tickled when it arrives, but let me give you the real low down on these guys.
1. Yogurt with Fruit & Granola: you get about 3 solid days to eat this, maybe 4. By day 5 things are not looking good. There is nothing like biting into a yogurt-​soaked strawberry that’s the achene equivalent of a broken man who cheated on his wife before declaring bankruptcy because she rightfully took him for all he was worth; she now sleeps in the arms of her young scuba instructor. It’s pretty grim (although the wife makes out okay, you might say). The granola it comes with is so mushy, most of us don’t eat it and add something else for crunch, like nuts. Speaking of which…
2. Nuts & Dried Fruit: There was a wooing period. We all remember it as a time when, with anticipation, we’d skip into the kitchen to grab a nut cup. Yup, I said it: nut cup. This thing came replete with macadamia nuts, cashews, pecans, walnuts. Fast forward a few months and the slow trickle of raisins and cranberries they started introducing had morphed into a straight dried fruit epidemic, the likes of which have completely wiped out all signs of macadamia nuts and threaten to forever kill the other nuts, too. I mean, like a really harsh situation. Kind of reminds you of the yogurt/​husband analogy.
3. Hummus & Veggie Cups: this hummus just isn’t right. Too garlicy, definitely not interested in tahini (sesame oil) to make it creamy and smooth. I see these get left behind in the fridge pretty often, but some folks snatch up the extras because they’re crazy. The veggies? Sometimes the cherry tomatoes and baby carrots look like they’ve had it rough. You definitely want to examine these before grabbing one to go.
See? When I think about all of that, I’m like: I’ll just buy the stuff myself. I like what they’re doing and what they’re about, but I’m tripping out over this enough from the work delivery. For free? I’m a fan. Otherwise I don’t need these vivid produce stories stumbling into my house. No more drama.

This company is awesome! It has made a difference in our eating habits. There is a significant difference in the taste in the produce we get from Greenling than from the store. We easily go through the local box in a week and don’t have to worry about wasting food. The recipes provided with the local box each week are easy to follow and delicious. We both look forward to the exotic vegetables we receive each week. It’s great and reassuring to know the food is produced right here in the Hill Country.
Finally customer service is excellent. We had a problem with our blackberries in our second order. When I called they credited my account no questions asked. The only thing I suggest is if the sun sets on your front door to request ice in the cooler or be sure to get home early on delivery evenings. We had one delivery arrive around 230 (not on purpose) and when I got home at 6:00 the chard on the top was almost room temperature.

I can’t say enough about this company! I have been a customer for 6 years and have only had the most wonderful experience with them. You can’t put a price on your health. You can put a price on gas!
Greenling brings local organic nutrition to your door at a fair price. People complain that healthy food is too expensive. Huge corporations often commit atrocities just to get you that bargain price, and the food is full of dangerous chemicals. Ask yourself how much Cancer costs?
When I was put in the ICU for 2 weeks, Greenling donated groceries to me without recognition. This is one of the best companies in Austin both in product and service — 10 Stars!

Greenling is great.
If you don’t drive, are very busy, and/​or have health issues and can’t get around as much as you would like, you will really appreciate Greenling.
Even though they made a few little mistakes from time to time, they consistently delivered the freshest and most perfect produce to my home.
Their serious commitment to sustainable, local, organic, and fair trade food is not only admirable, it is the future, if we are to have one.
The company is always listening to its customers and always expanding and improving the quality of its selection, website, and delivery services.

Great service
Misleading portions on prepared meals.
Everything about them is great, the service, and the quality are amazing. However their prepared meals say serves 2 and in reality it’s only enough food a single meal for one person, which means after tax you are paying $ 23 for a meal you still have to cook and clean.
Again great service, and obvious attention to every detail.

Be careful of your Bin Count! I give my bins back every week but yet my invoice says I have three out. I have recently contacted them about this and we will see if they fix the problem or not.
Just take caution and watch your invoice, this could easily be a scam to rip off people who don’t pay attention to their invoice!

After talking with the management at Greenling, I decided to keep my account open with them to order specific items if I need fresh food in bulk. But I still don’t trust them enough to get weekly drop off service.

I have used Greenling for 4 years now, I think it’s time to give my honest opinion on what I like and don’t like about the service.
The Good
— Local produce delivered to your door 2 days a week. They used to only deliver once a week, now they do two, which is great.
— Free delivery, sort of, because you are paying more in price for every item you purchase.
— Good customer service. That’s the reason I am still a customer because they do try to fix things when something went wrong.
The Bad
— Their products are overpriced to make up for the «free» shipping. When the same item is sold at HEB, you can get it for a lot cheaper. Considering the per item markup, it’s a great deal if you are single and needs $ 25 of groceries every week. It’s really expensive if you are a 2 – 3 person household and gets $ 50-​$ 100 of groceries.
— Not a very trustworthy business. They consistently sent me less produce by weight than what I ordered, so I now make it a habit to weigh it every time. When I said less, it’s not a little less, but 15−20% less, so either they have a faulty scale or someone’s intentionally doing that. While they do offer partial credit if you call, I just wish I can trust them to give me the exact weight of the produce I ordered.
— I have received items that were close to their expiration, so one should watch out for that.
Suggestions
— Order only local produce and goods from them. For non-​local items, buy at HEB or Costco and you’ll save a lot of money.
— Order what you need for the week and not more. They have a $ 25 minimum order requirement, so use that to get fresh local goods weekly.
At the end of the day, I am glad that there’s an option to get local products delivered in Austin, but there’s certainly some room for improvement.

I have been receiving local goodness from Greenling for a few years now. They have provided deliciousness during the holidays for my family and make hosting easy. and also my husband and I basically live on the recipe kits each week. They are so delicious and well orchestrated and I don’t know what we would do without them.
Greenling just curated 13 cold weather meal kits! Can’t wait to try them and it really makes it feel like Fall around our household. With Confituras Apple Butter on artisan bread, apple cider with rum (greenling recommended!), and all kinds of seasonal yummies.
I read the last comment and I can honestly say, I have never ever received a stinky bin. We get 2 – 3 bins per week and not one icky bin. And the produce is always beautiful and high quality. If it isn’t they refund me back no questions asked!
I am Such a fan and so glad this company exists. Stellar Customer service, free delivery, awesome newsletter, carrying a plethora of items from local businesses is just plain great! So I will be a forever fan of you Greenling. Thank you for changing up the meal kits too!

Absolutely LOVE this company. I order the Groupon everytime I see it but even if there’s none I still use them. Their customer service is great. My apartment office was dumb and after asking several times if there was a BRIGHT GREEN box in their office and they kept saying no, a few days later we found it and the food was bad. Greenling replaced it kindly even though they didn’t have to.
When you call, they’re nice. They have great food. Try the veggies with their housemade hummus= YUM! I wish they sold it alone!

The best part of Greenling is being able to send a free local box to a friend. The whole reason I got into Greenling was because a co-​worker kindly sent me a free box. The greens in the box were so much better than anything I had gotten at HEB. Wow, is this was salad is supposed to taste like? It’s delicious! After we had ordered, we also sent the free local box to some friends, and they are also enjoying the convenience of Greenling. The food is delivered on time and is always packaged well.
I believe the customer service at Greenling is awesome as well. I accidentally ordered 4 pounds of local beef instead of one, and with a simple phone call the mistake was fixed. And I didn’t catch the mistake until the morning of delivery! They truly go out of the way to make sure you’re happy. I love them!

If you have ever wondered what that hippie looking stalker van with the produce design driving around town delivers, then you should really check it out for yourself. A little bit of quirky and a whole lot of Austin, with some bright green color mixed in.
This company has really boomed in the last year, and Austinites all around are utilizing their services. With the option of building your own box or customizing a specific order, the staff can accommodate you to the best of their ability.
Products range from household goods to local kale chips to local meat, including duck and the like. Greenling does not stray from simple principles, yet it just rises up when it comes to customer service, convenience, and values. They pack things neatly, deliver on-​time, and do not charge you any ridiculous fees.
Yes, it does not necessarily fall in the guidelines of «local» market, as some products come from the typical health niche markets, and others could certainly be taken off of the product line. Fortunately, the fact that you can pretty much get everything dropped off at your door in a neon green box does play into the ideal of driving around less to get your groceries. I don’t know if any of that made sense.

During my first experience with Greenling, I was mainly disappointed with the value for the price. My second time around, I have more serious concerns.
A month after buying my first box, I decided to give them another shot. I’d noticed their decent selection of gluten-​free items, and it seemed like a collection of those goodies would be an excellent Christmas gift for my gluten-​intolerant sister. After logging into my account, I noticed that I was already scheduled to receive another Greenling box a week later. This was new information to me.
I’m guessing that some sort of system error set me up to receive $ 50 boxes of grapefruits and sweet potatoes until the end of time. Fortunately, I caught it before the box was shipped out and I was charged again. Unfortunately, it took me about twenty minutes of fiddling with their website to cancel all of those boxes indefinitely. Some of it may have been a network problem, but a large part was the confusing layout and lack of clarity about how to cancel future boxes in the first place. Their web designer should be ashamed. I think I can eliminate user error on this one, as I specifically recall choosing to be sent only one box, one time during my first order.
After that hoopla, I ordered a new box of gluten-​free treats and some organic meat for myself. Knowing that the final price varies based on the meat’s weight (irksome, but understandable), I checked my credit card to learn how much I would be charged over the $ 50 Groupon value. Imagine my surprise when I found a pending charge of $ 57! I called Greenling and spoke with a wonderful customer service representative who asked for my Groupon information and assured me that she would fix the error. I appreciated her apology, but I’m still miffed that it happened in the first place. Since I entered my Groupon information during my order, I’m not sure why they initially charged my credit card for the full amount.
The box seemed like a little better value than last time, although I was still let down by some of the sizes of the items. Perhaps for our trouble, we did receive some complimentary produce bags, which was a nice, useful touch.
At any rate, they’ll have to work out the problems with their website and billing system before I considered another purchase.
Edited to add: I tried calling Greenling after they contacted me about this review. The person I was supposed to speak with wasn’t available so I left a message. Twice. I still haven’t received any response.

I just received my second bi-​weekly order from Greenling and must say I couldn’t be happier! This is such a terrific concept and it just feels good to support local farmers. I enjoy the challenge of coming up with creative ways to cook my veggies and the extra local treats such as rolls from Rio de Brazil, Tiny pies and other local establishments is a big plus. It’s like a mini Christmas for me every other week! I love it so much I now order boxes as gifts for friends and family and they have all gotten a big kick out of it. They supplied me with those green gas that have done a very good job of keeping my veggies fresh. If you enjoy cooking fresh food, give them a try– you won’t be disappointed.

What can I tell you? I love food. I was turned onto this service by a friend/​co-​worker. You simply log on and sign up for the free delivery. Here is what I like about this service: Free delivery right to your front door, you can either choose the pre-​made baskets or you can make your own, nice selection, friendly staff, and the site is super easy to navigate.
Here is what I do not like: It’s a little pricey for me. I can get the same quality organic foods for less at my local grocers. I do splurge when I can and enjoy the goodies!

I love the concept. I love buying locally made produce. I love getting surprise items that I have to figure out how to cook.
But in practice, Greenling just didn’t work out for me. The cost of produce was simply too high compared to HEB’s organic section. Several times it seemed that by the time I got my basket, the produce was already wilted.
The time required to plan ahead is just not my style of making food. I don’t think about food until I’m hungry. Only then will I go shopping or out to eat.
This philosophy is simply incompatible with a service that requires you to plan your food purchases days in advance of when you’ll receive it. Plus, my fixed delivery date was Thursday & I tend to eat out more on weekends. By the time I was ready to use the food I had ordered, it would spoil.
I can’t blame Greenling too much, but the rigid delivery dates and advanced order time just don’t make this the easiest way to buy your food for a single young professional.
Oh, and when you calculate out how much it costs to keep a 6 sqft plastic bin lying on the floor in my little condo, its a disturbingly expensive waste of space.
