Gateway Guesthouse

And still the best B&B! My wife and I returned for our annual Austin vacation and again chose the Gateway Guesthouse. This time around we reserved The Studio (previously stayed in The Loft). The Studio is a single level, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom flat with a private patio that overlooks the pool.
The Studio is elegantly decorated in a black and white theme. The king-​size bed is so comfortable my wife and I never wanted to get out of bed. Each side of the bed is equipped with a night stand and lamp. There is a small refrigerator where Blaise and Bess left us a couple of complimentary beers since we arrived so late. There are 2 chairs with beanbag footstools and a corner table to lounge around. The T.V. affixed to the wall doesn’t swing out or turn, so if you watch from the bed just know it’ll be at an angle. There’s also free wifi with a strong signal.
The bathroom has a walk-​in shower and is stocked with Body Shop shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, lotion, and hand soap. There’s a nice fresh scent so feel free to leave your travel sized items at home to save room in your bag.
As expected we were greeted each morning with some of the most amazing breakfast. The first morning was a breakfast burrito with beans, a cup of fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, mineral water and coffee. The second morning the burrito was replaced by the anticipated apple pancakes with brie cheese. Simply amazing. The third morning Blaise and Bess sent us to the airport with two egg and sausage biscuits and fruit cup. The food is fantastic and the hosts are among the greats.
I look forward to returning again, but I’ll wish for an earlier return trip. If you’re looking to stay at a B&B in Austin look no further than the Gateway Guesthouse.

Our favorite place to stay whenever we visit Austin. We’ve stayed in the studio and the loft room. The rooms are clean and the beds are so comfortable! They have WiFi and cable. They also have a fridge which is great for keeping leftovers.
The home made breakfast is the best part! I make sure to save my appetite so I am hungry when breakfast arrives. I suggest eating breakfast out on the patio so you can enjoy the property view. Bess and Blaise are the nicest and friendliest hosts you will ever meet.
We stayed here during the ACL festival. It’s about a $ 6 dollar über ride to Zilker Park. It’s so close that we decided to walk back from the festival one night. You can easily walk to south congress and enjoy that area as well.
I highly recommend this place. Trust me you guys will love it!

This place is just fantastic. I don’t know if my wife and I stayed at a better bed and breakfast. In a nutshell, this place has great hosts/​innkeepers (Bess & Blaise), great breakfasts, prime location, very comfortable and clean digs (memory foam anyone?), refreshing pool and hot tub and super friendly dogs.
From check-​in to check-​out, the whole process and experience of staying here has been nothing short of convenient, comfortable and relaxing. Everything felt like it was being taken care of and the hospitality that Bess & Blaise («B&B») extended to us was warm and gracious. Bed and breakfasts tend to have the reputation of having that personal touch and B&B firmly solidify that reputation and even then, they take it to another level. It doesn’t even seem like they’re trying.

Every morning we were excited to find out what was in store for us for breakfast. Each day was a treat. I love condiments and it’s rare to find me not reaching for Tabasco or Heinz. Our breakfasts at Gateway were perfect in every way. Even knowing that there are plenty of great breakfast/​brunch places in Austin, we never felt like we were missing out. If anything we felt like we had happened upon a secret that the best breakfast was here and the only way you could get it was if you stayed here.
As for the location, you are literally in the middle of everything. We stayed in Austin for 5 days which was plenty of time to check out many of the places that we wanted to experience. We never drove more than 11 minutes (according to Google maps) to anywhere and even then it was because of traffic. Every single activity, food truck, restaurant, movie theatre, etc. is all within a mile or few. Our trips were short and we felt like we maximized our time here because we were so close to everything.
The amenities are plentiful and pretty much everything is taken care of. If there wasn’t something available, B&B were more than happy to accommodate. We will definitely return. We love Austin and it’s no small part because of Gateway Guesthouse and their awesome innkeepers, Bess and Blaise.

Oops, I realized this morning that I never added a review for the Gateway Guesthouse!
We made a trip to Austin in September of 2014 to check out the area because we were planning to move here in January. In looking at Trip Advisor, I came across Gateway Guesthouse and was sold the minute I saw there was a connection with Triple D. I’ll admit, it was a little over our budget for that trip and I had to twist my husband’s arm to agree to make the reservation but once we arrived at the place we both knew it was worth every single penny.
Gateway Guesthouse is a beautiful little haven tucked in an unassuming corner just across the river from downtown Austin. When you walk through the gate to what has to be one of the best backyards I have ever seen you are immediately at ease and relaxed. It was such a treat to eat breakfast out on the patio every morning.
We stayed in the Master Retreat and loved it. The bed was so comfortable that I wouldn’t have gotten out of it each morning had I not been afraid of missing breakfast. Breakfast was absolutely to die for. We skipped lunch almost every day because we were so full but the food was so good we couldn’t stop eating until our plates were empty!
Hospitality is also something that Blaise and Bess excel at. Since they knew we were scouting Austin, they gave us tips on what areas to drive through and what to see so that we could get the best feel for the area. They also gave us recommendations for a mortgage broker for when we were ready to buy a house.
There is not one single thing that I did not love about our stay at Gateway Guesthouse! You should definitely be a guest of Blaise and Bess. You will not regret it!

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying at Gateway Guesthouse this weekend. Not only was it charming and clean, it’s only a 7 minute drive to downtown Austin. Bess and Blaise were phenomenal hosts, they made sure everything was perfect for my husbands bday!

If you love B&Bs like I do, this is the concept at its finest! The home is beautiful, incredibly well kept and oozes with CHARM! From the sweet dogs to the details of hand-​written notes and vases of flowers throughout it is a home you wish you could live in forever!
But none of this magic happens without the owners and there are just not enough kind words! Not only did they take amazing care of us and feed us amazing food (the most impressive breakfast I have EVER had at a B&B…or in a restaurant for that matter) but they genuinely have the most welcoming and loving spirits! They are beyond gracious and I will never drive past their street without smiling knowing (as my now husband referred to them) that «the sweetest angels» live here in Austin!
We were here for our wedding weekend and were definitely not the easiest of guests;(but our needs were met with grace and hospitality like I have never experienced. «Great customer service» doesn’t adequately cover it– Bess and Blaise welcome you into their charming and loving home.
This B&B is a treasure and I am certain will be the GOLD standard by which I measure all others!

A small group of us recently took Bess’s quick breads class at Gateway Guesthouse. I have made scones, muffins, banana bread, etc. before so I wasn’t expecting to learn much. But I have to say that not only did I have a lot of fun, but that I also learned a lot from Bess. She has decades of experience running a restaurant — that practical experience translated into really helpful tips and advice. Not only that, but classes are small and personalized to you and your group. So it would be great for a girlfriends get-​together or team-​building exercise. Just be forewarned: you will leave stuffed! We had a savory scone, a fruit scone, and a biscuit… and we took home a couple of scones and biscuits.
Gateway Guesthouse is also a lovely bed and breakfast. The backyard is a beautiful, green oasis with an outdoor living room and a beautiful pool and fountain. I live in Austin, but I will be booking a night at the Guesthouse (if only for the backyard and one of Bess’s dinners).

Loved our cooking classes with Blaise and Bess. Very good and practical info. Plus, they are quite fun. The classes are good because they are small and personal and you get hands on opportunities to participate. Made me want to cook lots more.

Blaise and Bess at the Gateway Guesthouse were the perfect hostesses two weekends ago when I reserved the entire B&B for three nights for myself and my bridesmaid crew. The rooms were comfortable, the breakfast amazing, the pool and patio an excellent place to hang out, and the dogs well-​behaved and charming. Blaise and Bess were very accommodating with our occasional schedule and who-​sleeps-​where changes, and I hope we didn’t frazzle them too much with our general boisterousness. (FYI — organizing activities for a wedding party is like trying to herd cats.) I have stayed at approximately 8 B&Bs across the country, and the Gateway Guesthouse was top notch.

The Gateway Guesthouse is our current go-​to B&B in Austin. Very high quality and delicious breakfast. And the Beds are super comfortable. Our favorite room is the Master Retreat because its huge and nicely furnished. We have also stayed in the loft and found it very cozy and warm. But beware the stairs are steep. For those who are interested in experiencing downtown, on our last visit we took the 7 bus, which picks up across the street, into downtown and spent the evening on 6^th street. After a night of drinking we took a very short taxi ride back to the Guesthouse and were very pleased that we did not have to drive our car into downtown traffic, or drink and drive. Also, my husband enjoys swimming in Big Stacy in the mornings, it is a natural spring fed swimming pool, only a 5 minute walk away. We will continue to come back to the Guesthouse and fully recommend it to others.

We just returned from 3 nights @ Gateway Guesthouse. My husband & I have stayed at lots of B&Bs, & this has been one of our top experiences so far. You will not be dissapointed! Close to everything. Food is wonderful, mattress is awesome!

We had to get away from the hustle of day-​to-​day life (song playin in the background «err day i’m hustlin») and take our first trip away from the little ONE. Austin was the weekend place we could conveniently drive to from Houston, has lots to do and eat.
Wife booked this quiet, quaint little BnB after the Hyatt she wanted was unavailable. To our surprise, it was the best choice we made not including the great restaurants and food trucks we ate at. SoCo was perfect for us (music, food, and shopping). It was a simple drive down the street. We wanted private and quiet and that’s what we got. The place had a nice little «escape» route where we didn’t have to come across anyone. Antisocial you say… yep, this weekend was just about me and my wife.
I loved it and hoping to book multiple trips in the future. I don’t see us staying anywhere else.

I took a class from Chef Bess that taught me how to treat and use my kitchen knives. I had NO IDEA that I needed this class as much as I did. I learned tons, had a fun time and would highly recommend spending time with the Chef. Thank you Gateway Girls!

My wife and I mixed the celebration of our 10^th anniversary with some business meetings over a week at Gateway. We can’t recommend Gateway high enough, stop your search and reserve your stay, you’ll be glad you did. Everything was outstanding, the room, of course the bed, and the food was beyond outstanding! Bess and Blaise made us feel so welcome, and did all they could to ensure our stay was perfect.
THE FOOD! 5 Stars! The pride and care that Bess and Blaise take to find the finest ingredients and the exceptional preparation make every meal an event. We highly recommend planning more meals than breakfast, and if you like wine, try to arrange a tasting. Fresh, organic, local and chosen with care, I wish I’d taken more pictures and notes as Bess shared insights into each meal. Everything is from scratch and your taste buds will appreciate all the extra care.
The location makes it easy to get anywhere in Austin and it still feels like you are away from the city as you lounge in the beautifully designed backyard oasis.
Look no further, book it.

Awesome, awesome, awesome place. The only thing better than the wonderful hospitality from the owners Bess and Blaise is the fantastic food! The grounds are so peaceful that you don’t even feel like you are in the middle of Austin. It doesn’t hurt that they have two super-​cute dogs that wander the main house and yard – makes you feel right at home :) Anytime you have the chance – STAY HERE.

I live in Austin and booked a stay at Gateway for my mother and her friend. They were so impressed with my «obvious» knowledge of the best and classiest places to stay in Austin! ;)
The owner /​innkeeper /​chef team, Bess and Blaise, were so easy going and accommodating. The Inn itself is absolutely beautiful — very tastefully designed with a touch of class and yet easy, comfortable feel to it. Photos don’t do it justice. My mother and friend felt so welcome and at home — as did my boyfriend and I when we visited and came for breakfast.
Bess is a natural as a chef, making everything from scratch (even down to the sausage and breads). She has a true gift when it comes to blending flavors. The price was reasonable given the amazing service and facilities — worth every penny. We could have spent more on the local holiday inn!
Location is great too — close to everything. My only complaint is that I don’t get to stay there since I live down the street (and always travel with my dog, not sure if pets are allowed)! I’ll be booking with them again when I have out of town guests.

This place is amazing. The owners, Bess and Blaise, make you feel right at home in this relaxing getaway just a short distance from downtown Austin. I’ve been to Gateway Guesthouse twice, and both times we stayed in «The Studio,» which has high ceilings and really appealing modern décor. The highlights of our stay were the gorgeous hot tub and pool area in the backyard (a great place to spend the whole day if you really want to relax) and the incredible breakfasts prepared by Bess, who is a very talented chef. I can’t wait to go back for a third stay!

Found this place on a whim, and if you don’t go, you are REALLY missing out. The hosts are warm and lovely, the food is absolutely marvelous, and the rooms are cozy and adorable!

Until Gateway Guesthouse, I had this stigma of bed and breakfasts being obnoxious and decorated for old ladies. This place is amazing. It’s one of those rare cases where you are out seeing the town and can’t wait to go back to the room (I stayed in the Studio). The location is perfect. It’s close to all of the best things to do in Austin, but it’s quiet and tranquil. Bess and Blaise were terrific and the breakfast will ruin you for all other breakfasts just as GG will ruin you for all other B&Bs.

Hmm… From the moment I saw the website, I knew that this would be a special stay. The Gateway Guesthouse did not disappoint! Confirmation came with my call. I spoke with Blaise and told her the purpose of my visit and she just made me feel so comfortable and welcome. Upon arrival, I was greeted by the sweetest dogs and a hug from Blaise (you don’t get that at the big chains… js). Upon entering the Studio (my room), I was blown away. Modern and girly, but a guy would be comfortable there — the tall ceilings are painted BLACK! A plush king size bed centers the room, which is all decorated in black & white with pops of purple. So, great accommodations… next came the great service. I mentioned needing a pedicure and within minutes, Blaise had contacted 2 salons on my behalf and was able to schedule an appointment for that same day. She printed out maps of the area and told me of all the places I should explore. I ended up having a fabulous time and the best pedicure I’ve ever had. I thought it couldn’t get any better. Sunday morning I awake and venture over to the main house for breakfast… Pancakes covered in apples & walnuts in a honey sauce with brie!!! (Bess & her «flappers» were featured on Diners Drive Ins & Dives). Sweet. Savory. A dance of flavor in my mouth! Served with the thickest, most flavorful bacon I’ve ever had… I had to sit in elated contemplation after every bite. Probably the best breakfast I’ve ever had. Yep, definitely the best… Bess rocks in the kitchen!
That all said, I am so thankful I chose a B&B over staying at a chain hotel. It is close enough to downtown and SoCo but is its own little oasis. I wish I’d been able to enjoy the pool and spa — but I will definitely return! Thank you ladies for such a wonderful and memorable stay!
