Hands down the best fence company in Austin! I’ve worked with Gary on multiple projects from big to small. His prices are extremely reasonable, quality is superb and the job is always completed in a timely and friendly manner.
He only uses the best cedar, always uses metal posts and uses screws opposed to nails which always work themselves out. He also uses 3 horizontal supports (instead of the typical 2 used to save money by other companies) to prevent bowing. His fences last so much longer than his competitors, yet his prices are competitive.
I wish all of my subcontractors took pride in their work the way Gary does!

We have now had Gary and his team complete four projects for us, two fence replacements, a gate replacement and an emergency tree limb removal. We couldn’t be happier with both the work that was performed and the manner in which it was completed. All projects were completed either on or ahead of the agreed upon schedule. I will certainly be calling upon GEM for our next project and recommend Gary without hesitation.

We had GEM replace the cedar fence and 2 gates between my neighbor’s house and mine. Super job! Very easy to work with and they didn’t leave a mess like other companies I have used in the past. The extra cost to have high quality materials and workmanship is worth it. I have no doubt that the new fence and gates will last much, much longer than the original fence put in by the builder.

Gary built me a very nice looking and extremely well-​built horizontal privacy fence using steel posts. He actually suggested asking my neighbor if we could remove the chain link fence, which we hadn’t thought of. It turned out to be a great idea.
Anyway, I’d give Gary 5 stars, but when I called him and left a message about doing some tree trimming, he never called me back. Must be busy I guess…

Another fence building company recommended that we contact Gary Mullins because they were not able to work in our area. I spoke with Gary and outlined the scope of work. He understood what we needed and bid out a fair price and was able to meet our timeframe, which was tight. I had not heard back from him the night before he was supposed to start so I called. He said he had not included one aspect of the material in the bid he gave us and couldn’t lose that money out of the labor cost. In addition he seems to have forgotten to put us on the schedule as now he was all booked up. I said we would pay for the extra material but instead he said he wouldn’t do the job. He left us in a lurch and never even called himself to say he couldn’t/wouldn’t do the job.

There is no question that I lucked out by finding Gary. I needed a new fence on a new home I purchased, and I didn’t know where to start, so of course I came to Unilocal to check out some companies that did fencing with good reviews. I ended up getting referred over to Gary from a different company that didn’t service the South part of Austin and said he was a great guy.
As soon as I got a hold of Gary, he met up with me at my home and gave me an estimate on how much it would cost. He is so easy to work with and talk to that I felt like he’s an old buddy of mine helping me out giving advice on the work to be done.
He got his crew together a few weeks later when I was ready and they did an awesome job. He had told me his materials and fence were of much higher quality than my neighbors, etc. and I took his word for it. Well, when it was all said and done, it was night and day. The fence was not only of a much higher quality than I thought in composition, but the way he made it flush and trimmed each board so that it would be completely even was beyond anything we had discussed. He went far above and beyond my expectations and he did it out of pride for his work.
As a Real Estate Broker, I sometimes need to get estimates for clients that need to fix their homes to get them ready to sell. Well a few weeks later I called Gary to get an estimate and he drove down to my client’s house the next day and spent 45 minutes measuring and gave us a very accurate estimate on how much it would cost to transform a backyard. He didn’t ask for any fees and he does not push any sales. My clients were very happy with his estimate and his prompt response.

Trying to get a fence contractor in Austin seems to be nearly impossible. I called several companies and got no return phone call. Another contractor did not want to work around the trees in my fence line and so recommended Gary Mullins.
Gary returned my calls and rapidly came out to give an estimate. We had to wait a few weeks to get into his schedule and the job took a day or two longer than he’d estimated, but it was well worth it. Gary and his team installed a beautiful new cedar fence with metal poles and screws in ²⁄₃ of my backyard. He billed the quote and threw in an «extra part of the fence that I didn’t need replaced mistake» for free. They cleaned up after themselves and were easy to work with. Gary is a funny guy with a unique sense of humor and a good work ethic.

Gary is that guy. I needed a section of fencing replaced at one of my properties. I called a couple of the «Big Box» fencing companies. In each case, it took a couple of days to get a return call, then a couple more days to get an estimate.
Before sealing the deal with one of these guys, I stumbled onto Gary through a referral. He called me promptly at the end of the day (during the day he is OUT ON THE JOB, so you may not get a response until evening. it’s worth the wait!).
When I described the job to Gary, he gave me a firm quotation per foot right over the phone without even viewing the site. Gary’s quote was a good 10−15% less than the lowest bid I could get otherwise. BUT, his quote included using steel posts instead of wood (at a slight premium, but still kept it well below the other quotes), 3 cross rails instead of two (Duh. of course that’s what you would want when thinking about it), AND he uses premium, extra thick pickets, not those flimsy cardboard things they sell at Lowe’s or H.D. Additionally, he ONLY uses exterior screws, not just nails, even though it obviously takes long and costs more, and all the posts are set in concrete.
My project was a bear for sure: Thick hedges on the outer side required a lot of pruning before they could get to the fence, and of course all the old posts were rotted but still in concrete which had to be jack-​hammered out. None of this was a problem for Gary, nor did it entail any extra cost (the other guys all wanted to charge extra to trim back the hedges)
Gary seems to keep quite busy, and after we agreed on the job and price, he set a starting date of about 2 weeks in the future. Sure enough, without any action on my part, about 2 weeks after our first conversation, I get a call from Gary saying the crew would be there on the following Wednesday. Note that he never asked for a deposit, or even a signed contract. Everything was done on a gentleman’s handshake agreement.
On the big day, I swung by the site about 10:00 to see how progress was coming along. Man, was I surprised to see 3 guys there plus Gary, all the hedges were pruned back and stacked, the entire fence section had been taken down and loaded on a trailer for hauling off (along with the branches… part of the job), AND all the metal posts were already set in concrete. These guys work fast!
It took just a day and a half for Gary and his crew to complete the job, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. The fence looks beautiful and sturdy. it will probably outlast me, and all the old fence and branches had been removed.
I just can’t say enough good things about Gary Mullins. He is a rare treasure amongst a sea of frauds and flakes.
In addition to fencing, Gary gladly takes on other projects, including landscaping, painting, moderate remodeling, etc.
Gary is a low-​tech operator… no smart phone, email address, or credit card capability. Be prepared to pay via check or cash, but it won’t be an inconvenience.
There’s no doubt I’ll be using him often in the future!

I called all the 5-​star companies on Angie’s List… not a single returned call. I found another vendor who was busy, but recommended GEM. I got a quick call back from the owner, Gary Mullins, and he gave me all the options over the phone. I hired them on the spot and only had to wait a couple of weeks. They used top quality materials, did a first class installation and used screws instead of nails. This new fence is rock solid and superior in every way to the one it replaced. His crew was friendly and cleaned up before they left. Gary was by to inspects the final product and ensures it is up to his standards. Pricing was fair, especially in light of how good the quality is. Many of my neighbors paid for more inferior quality materials and workmanship. Gary is a truly a GEM. He also, as the name implies, does plantings, mowing and takes care of trees. I will be using him for landscaping next.
