Fernando Loya, DMD

Dr. Loya doesn’t deserve the title of Dr. Going to him has been one of the worst nightmares of my life. I went to him for extractions and dentures. When I called to make my first appointment, (he was assigned to me by my insurance company) I was told that they did that type of dentistry. I was lied to. First of all, I needed extensive work done. I had to have 9 extractions and all he did to numb the pain were shots, no sedation, and I felt all of it. I was in shock when he finished and my husband all but carried me out of there. After I waited the required amount of time for my gums to heal I went in to have the mold done for my upper denture and when all was said and done it was WAY too big, so he SAID he sent it back to the lab to be adjusted but the end result was the same. I tried using that one for a while but it kept falling out. I went back and basically told him that this was unacceptable and insisted that he start over and have a new one made. That one was just as bad! He then told me that it was my palate and that was as good as it was going to get. I’ve since been to a dentist who was horrified by the way my denture fit and assured me that one that fit could be made, I just can’t afford it yet as I spent all of my money having the horrible work that he did done. I have to glue and re-​glue my denture everyday and I can’t eat food that has to be chewed or my denture will fall out. He also filled some teeth and only put a temporary filling in one of them. I asked him on two different visits when he was going to finish it because it is rough against my tounge and he asked me both times if it had fallen out yet. I think he had dollar signs in his eyes hoping for a root canal (oh the horror.) They were. also supposed to clean my teeth after my fillings and didn’t. I know this has been a long review and I could go on and on but I won’t. Thank you for reading and be warned.

Couldn’t get past the terrible front desk guy. I think it is his brother. At any rate I will take my business elsewhere. I wonder if the doctor knows what a jerk this guy is on the phone.

Dr. Loya has been saving my teeth for about 10 years. He is very honest and he and his office manager make office visits a positive experience as they display a genuine concern for you health.
Several years ago i was sitting in his waiting area when I heard him tell a very attractive teenage girl that he would not abstract one of her molars. He advised that she was too young to have gaping holes in her smile and explained the potential problems with gum loss, teeth movement. I was impressed by his candid discussion with her and his professional demeanor.

I’ve been going to Dr. Loya since 2009, with the exception of one year when I changed jobs and much to my disappointment my new insurance didn’t cover his office. After another job change a year later I was so glad to return to his office & staff. Everyone in his office makes you feel comfortable — the dentist, the hygenists, the office staff. Dr. Loya has a great sense of humor and attitude that puts me at ease every visit. Highly recommended!

I am very happy to have been assigned Dr. Loya as my dentist for my new mandatory Big Brother insurance. He is very nice and his staff are wonderful. They saved me a lot of money on a deep cleaning that Castle Dental had quoted at 1300 dollars just 2 months before. I decided to wait for my insurance to become effective after Jan. 1 and I’m glad I did. Even if I had no insurance it would have been over a thousand less than Castle. I urge you to try Loya Dental out. I will be telling anyone who needs a dentist to go see them. Great downtown location. Very professional and friendly. Very easy to schedule an appointment. A true pleasure to do business with.

I have seen Dr. Loya for five years now and I have always had an excellent experience. They always make room for me in an emergency and take good care of my needs right away. I never have to wait and I get treated like a family member.

Worst dental office ever!
First of all, don’t expect to get a clean-​up on your first visit. They’ll do a check-​up instead. This may be common practice but they should have said so over the phone when I booked an appointment for a clean-​up. This clean-​up never happened.
During that check-​up, I mentioned a specific concern about my teeth and gums to the dentist. I doubt he listened to me as he declared everything was fine besides one tiny cavity for which I would have to come back. Less than a month later, I needed an emergency root canal at the exact location I had indicated during my first visit (which was not the location of the cavity he had found). When I asked him about that, he replied: «But I was not looking at that». Well, thanks for making my point!
Last, but not least, the office manager (Mr. Bow-​tie) is a crook. He’ll always try to over-​charge you. Not by a lot, but just enough so you don’t necessarily pay attention (10 $ here, 20 $ there). And of course, their fees are never detailed; at the end of your visit, Mr. Bow-​tie simply tells you: «It’s just –insert random amount that has nothing to do with your insurance – $ today, sir.» But the best part now: when you start asking questions about those fees, he’ll start losing patience. This all climaxed with Mr. Bow-​tie insulting me over the phone when I questioned their referal to a specialist (don’t take their word when they say a specialist «take your insurance»; it’s probably just their buddy). Unreal!

If you’re assigned to them, run. I was assigned recently, and had a dental emergency. I called and called, finally got in touch. He was rude and flippantly indicated I would have to wait until mid-​March for any appointment. Told me to just switch dentists because he couldn’t believe they assigned me to him. So clearly he’s not looking for any new clients. And if you are one, take this opportunity to find a new dentist! I understand if your appointments are full but no need to be rude to a scared young woman with a dental emergency. Haven’t had that kind of reaction from someone since I moved from NYC!

Knowing the difficulty in booking an appointment, I booked my cleaning 6 months in advance. When I arrived, I only assumed I would have my teeth cleaned.
***As a new patient, expect for your first visit to only consist of x-​rays and a general dental exam.***
I found it quite frustrating that I had to drive to the dentist, pay a copay, have my teeth looked at and x-​rayed, and then sent on my way. I cleared my schedule 6 months in advance only to spend approximately 10 minutes at the dental office. I questioned the dentist and the office assistant about the protocol and they were quite curt with me. When booking, they should inform you that your second appointment will be the actual teeth cleaning. Additionally, there was no appointment reminder as most doctors will do.
After much thought, I decided to follow through and schedule the cleaning (my second appointment). I’ve had 1 – 2 cleanings per year since I was about 5 years old with a number of dentists. This cleaning was the strangest I’ve ever experiences. My teeth were shaved down with a drill rather than cleaned with the standard dental tools. In fact, one of my front teeth was left with a rough texture from the shaving. Flossing was not included in my cleaning. The entire procedure lasted about 15 minutes from the moment I walked into the door to the moment I paid my second copay.
I feel scammed. I will never be back.

Dr. Loya and his staff are wonderful. Marcy, his dental assistant is one of the nicest women I have ever met. She held my hand as the dentist cleaned my teeth (I’m a big baby). They make you feel right at home and I have never had to wait in the waiting area for more than 5 minutes. They are fabulous and greet you by name right when you walk in.
Why not 5 stars? It’s really difficult to get an appointment.
