100% REAL Mexican food Michoacán style!!! No Tex-mex here! No ranch dressing with your tacos! If you like the true«Sabores de México” – for all of you gringos, that means«flavors”– look no further. Time and time again, I have suffered thru bland«authentic» Mexican food here in Texas, but El Borrego de Oro never disappoints. Some favorites are the Lamb(a.k.a Borrego, Spanish lesson for the gringos;), the chili relleno w/chipotle sauce, the fajitas, the mole, and so many more! They also have ALL of the good Mexican beers here too… Victoria, Bohemia, etc. While the interior and ambiance is quite modest, the service is not. They take good care of you here and as you wait for each plate, that is carefully made with love, there is delicious spicy salsa with chips o’ plenty to wet your appetite! This is truly one of SoCo’s best kept secrets that I hope is here to stay.

Alright this definitely a great place that is literally a hole in a wall place. Not just by just looking at the restaurant from the outside and judging it. To go eat or not to go eat there is the question of many. I feel bad for the non-Yelpers who don’t know about the reviews of this place. I for one never even knew about this place and it’s close by my job and we always go across the street to Thunder Cloud subs. We had a vendor takes over here for lunch. He said another group of employees from our organization took him here and he loved it. That he wanted to try it us too this time. I was game especially after he told me it a hole in the wall kind of place. He bragged about the salsa. Me being Hispanic I was like it just salsa white boy chill. LoL! Let it told it was great salsa. Not too spicy and not too mild but just right. I will say they have some awesome homemade corn tortillas. First Mexican that didn’t make homemade flour tortillas. Because normally that is what most restaurants make. I love their corn tortillas. Now for the ultimate critic. Their menu do was delicious and just right on with the meat and harmony! I will have to come here next time we have some maintenance at work. The rest of the group got their spicy pork meal and that look delicious too! The corn chips with their salsa were great. Not too greasy either. The facility was very clean. The staff was friendly, respectful, and enjoyable. Drinks were kept full and so we’re the chips and salsa.

Great service. The queso is delicious. Food seemed good, but we were too full from queso to get very far. Would come back again though.

Be careful eating here. This place should be required to have patrons sign a waiver. Once you eat at this hole in the wall gem you will most likely dislike every other Mexican restaurant in Austin. Seriously. Since I started eating here a couple of years ago every other place that people call the«best» just seems fair to midland. I’ve eaten pretty much everything on the menu, and I will say that you cannot go wrong, period. The chips and salsa are the best in town, along with the guy serving them. He’s the best. Every single aspect from food to service is amazing. If you disagree we can meet and settle this like real men.

My wife and I were trying to find some place that wasn’t crowded on New Years Day, and after a few failed attempts, we stumbled upon this place. When you walk in, you feel like your in your grandmothers house(in a good way). We sat down and were greeted by salsa and chips. WARNINGBESTSALSAEVER. It was so good, my wife and I kept getting it refilled! We placed our order, mine was the chile relleno, and my wife got the migas plate. Our food came rather quick, and we got right to work. The chile relleno was super good, and a decent size portion. The rice and beans that came with it were the standard rice and beans. These were really good. The beef was full of spices and flavor, and the chipotle sauce covering the relleno was superb. The migas plate was also decently sized, and loaded with flavor. The tortilla chips in the migas were super crunchy and not soggy, and the potatoes were really good! Definitely coming back here!

Was looking for authentic Mexican food and found this place online. When we got there and sat down the service was quick and our waitress was friendly. Had the tortilla soup and it was delicious! Definitely going back to this place… haven’t decided if I should try something else on the menu or get the tortilla soup. It was so good.

I have lived across the street from this place for almost 3 years and just not finally went in! I think I was highly judging it by the curb appeal and just simply forgot it was there. I am from San Antoni, and this place hits ALLOFTHEFEELS. It just feels like home. The chips were some of my favorites; warm, thin, and, crisp. The kind you can taste the butter on and eat forever. I have a very tiny list of places here in Austin the«have the good chips», this is now at the top. I ordered a kids meal, quesadilla and I swear the entire meal tasted exactly like how my grandma used to make it when I was younger. The rice and beans are truly not the most flavor packed and will not blow your mind but they are so reminiscent of home for me it was crazy. The fresh flour tortilla was so tasty and all though it was just cheese melted in between a folded tortilla, my quesadilla hit the spot. Our service was good and our food came out fast. Worth the money! Lots of food with out a huge price tag! My kind of place! I don’t think this is the best mexican food establishment in austin but it really hit home for me and I am so happy I finally made my way in! Truly a great Hole in the Wall authentic establishment. I’ll have to go back and try an actual plate and update my review soon.

My husband and I arrived in Austin yesterday for my very first visit. He is from Texas and wanted Mexican food so I turned to Unilocal for a hidden inexpensive gem. Our service was so terrific that I hate giving this rating. Chips and salsa were brought out really quickly. The chips seemed like they were from a bag. We ordered the al pastor and lamb tacos. They are much larger than I expected and 2 would make a decent meal for less than 6 bucks. Both were really yummy. No points off for mega greasy. Just a warning. We also tried the pollo gordita. Too much food for one person with the tacos but would be a nice small meal alone. It was pretty good, not great. Tim had the cheese enchiladas and they were boring. They needed some raw onion to give flavor. With a happy hour marg and 2 hours beers our bill was $ 31.

Doesn’t look too attractive on the outside, but the inside was actually quite interesting with hispanic paintings and décor. Food came a bit slow, but it tasted pretty good. I ordered the tilapia which was delicious, while the spanish rice was a bit plain. Average pricing — which we thought it should be cheaper given the location and rate of service.

On my taste the food is good. The staff is very friendly. 3 and half star is worth. The tamale is a little dry and so tiny. We didn’t finished the food.

You can’t go wrong going to a place where most of the patrons are Mexican. I ordered the pork chile verde, my friend the enchiladas. The food was delicious, including the tortillas de maíz, good ambiance and friendly waitress. A must-go on my next trip to Austin. Gracias por la buena experiencia Borrego De Oro.

This is my favorite Mexican joint in South Austin, the food is outstanding and if your looking for good chips and salsa, this is the place. I normally get my own basket of chips and bowl of salsa, because I will finish it. It’s gets busy during lunch, so food delivery is not always timely, but still worth the wait!

I had the urge for tex mex and the search came up with a few nearby(go figure as I happen to be in Austin). The one I had read about and was the closest was tucked behind some other shops and I went right past. Glad I did. It looked like a chain store with bright new signs. Luckily for me there was this place just around the corner. It looked used and old and divey. Perfect hole in the wall type that has its priorities right. Awesome food and good service. Some would have gone the other way and that’s fine with me too. More room for me. Try the house specialities. You won’t be disappointed.

The Food: I ordered a Combo #1 with beef enchilada, pork tamale, crispy beef taco, rice, and beans. I also ordered a cup of tortilla soup. No cheese on anything by request. The sauce on the enchilada and tamale reminded me of skillet queso from Chili’s but not as good. The sauce obscured what I ultimately realized was the tamale but looked like a rolled taco. The tamale had a strong, not entirely pleasant flavor. The beef enchilada had no flavor of its own without the chili sauce. The crispy beef taco was the same: just meat in a shell. And not very good meat at that. The beans tasted burned but the rice was pretty darned good. After a few bites of each, I pushed my plate away. The tortilla soup is the reason this review is not 2 stars. The soup was full-flavored and rich with generous portions of shredded chicken and avocado. The Service: The server brought me salsa but no chips and didn’t ask if I wanted them. I asked for a cup of tortilla soup first but got a bowl of it with the rest of the meal.

Don’t judge this book by it’s cover. In fact, for most people who Know where to find Great Mexican food its often going to in small family run businesses like this one! We’ve come multiple times for lunch and not once have had a complaint worth mentioning. They’re chips & salsa are the da Bomb! Chips are bubbly crunchy and the salsa is just the right level of Hot while still tasty. I’ve tried a large majority of the menu by now, but Highly Recommend the following dishes: Beef Fajita Tacos plate — Outstanding! Beef fajitas are cooked to perfection. moist, melt in your mouth, well seasoned, served with grilled onions & bell peppers. The plate is also complete with rice, beans, & salad. Extra tortillas on request. Menudo — Great flavor. Not too much hominy, huge bowl served with corn tortillas & freshly chopped onions. Barbacoa Tacos: Greasy, yes. Tasty, Hell yes. Moist, greasy but not dreached with grease, yes there is a difference, and covered with fresh cilantro & chopped onions. The Taco itself is a big one, not necessarily huge but Two can be a whole meal in itself. Service is Always Excellent! Waiters are always friendly and helpful with the menu. Prices are Cheap! Great lunch specials too!
