Econo Self Storage

Econo Self Storage is a total ripoff and a nightmare for anyone seeking a safe, dry storage. They destroyed all of my valuable belongings due to a roof leak where rain water poured in for four years while I worked out of town. They then locked me out of a new unit I had paid upfront four months in advance on, in which to store belongings that I returned to town with, in order to coerce me to sign a waiver to not sue them for destroying my property. The manager Victor allows homeless people to hang out there all day, and is totally rude and unprofessional about any problems. I had to call the police to make him let me into my own paid-​for unit. Anyone seeking secure storage is strongly advised against using this dodgy operation.

I wouldn’t normally think of giving a place as banal as a self storage location a perfect five stars. But I really really do like the place and the people who work there. From busy lanes of North Lamar, Econo Self Storage might not look like much – the location occupies an old drive-​through lumber yard and a few of the adjacent businesses. However, drive through that tunnel and you’ll find yourself one of the few good storage places in Austin.
Econo Self Storage is a family-​run business. And, because this business is important to them, you’ll find friendly service and rates that are actually reasonable. Over the more than year-​and-​a-​half that I’ve had a unit there, my rates haven’t even gone up! Additionally, the people at Econo are very honest about what they can offer. If they say your locker will be cool in the summer, you can trust it will be. You won’t necessarily get all the bells and whistles that you might get with a national chain storage company. But you can still pay with a credit card over the phone.
In short, this place is a hold-​out of what Austin used to be like. It’s friendly, quirky, and a great place to hang your (extra) hat (s).

I recently rented for a couple of months from Econo Self Storage and I have no complaints. The price was cheap, the place was central, and I got what I paid for. There is decent security, plus the manager is helpful and nice. The place is a bit scary looking-​a long dark covered tunnel, with no lights in any units (bring your own flashlight). But, in the 100 degree plus days of July/​August, I found the cover nice to have when moving my stuff in/​out of storage, and it kept my stuff cool.

I have rented space at Econo several times over the years and have always had a good experience. Cheaper than others and central — works for me. I’m not looking for humidified /​ac /​pedicure included mind you, just a place to keep stuff between moves, while travelling or just because of american too-​much-​stuff dilemna. My stuff is always there in the end and in fine condition. Dude who runs the place is very nice and hasn’t charged me a deposit last couple of times for familiarity’s sake. If you are not storing your furs and diamonds, this place is great. If you are, get out of my face.

I don’t agree — storage facility doesn’t have to look spiffy — if you look at the roof, it’s brand new, the lockers are cheap and the place has good security. Your loss is my gain.

Creepy City. I googled self storage in Austin and Econo Self Storage popped up. I pulled in to the covered area to try to protect my couch that was getting rained on and that’s about the only positive thing I have to say about this place.
The internet site I used said that they opened at 8:30am, but when I walked up to the office door, a sign was taped up that said, «New Hours M-​F 9am — 6pm.» It was just past 9am and no one was in the office. I had to catch a plane later and was worried about getting all my stuff moved in time so I called the phone number listed on the door, hoping to catch someone inside.
Already a bit weary and hesitant about leaving my valuables in this place because it was very run down and there were puddles everywhere which I couldn’t distinguish from run off from the roof or leaks in the roof. The storage units were made of old plywood painted white, two stories high. The second story had a railing that was made of rope so it had the feel of an old pirate ship. I didn’t want anyone else getting their hands on my booty.
While all of these thoughts were racing through my head, finally a man answered the phone and I told him that I was hoping to rent a unit from him. He informed me that he was on his way to the dentist and would be back in an hour. I asked if there might be anyone else that would be working and he informed me that he was the only one, but I could try to rent a unit next door at A-​Aabat Self Storage. My gut told me to move on to another storage place, even if that meant being late for my plane. I found what I was looking for at Burnet Road Self Storage and all the rain in Austin delayed my flight so that I wasn’t too late to the airport.
