Dale P Hsieh, MD

If you are anything like me, you can count on one hand the people who have lifted you up when you desperately needed help. Rare are those blessed with the ability to truly effect positive change on those around them — rarer still are the individuals who develop the character necessary to continuously effectuate this positive development in others.
Dr. Hsieh is hands down the best doctor (not just psychiatrist) I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Moreover, he’s just one hell of a dude. I actually look forward to my meetings with him. His bedside manner is unparalleled — I always leave feeling better, clearer, and more confident about myself, my condition, and my path.
You can read all about how knowledgeable Dr. Hsieh is in all the other reviews so I won’t spend much time here — suffice it to say, he was the catalyst for helping me overcome a medical issue with which I have struggled a lifetime. He has an amazing capacity for empathy, which I believe is his greatest tool. Any MD can hand out scripts — it takes a healer to identify the true source of the problem and take practical steps to appropriately and compassionately address it. Dr. Hsieh is a born healer.

Dr. Dale has been a godsend. I am a perpetual student and rarely have extra money, but my appointments with Dr. Dale have been worth every penny. While attempting to navigate some depression/​anxiety issues I’ve talked to my primary care physician over the years, but it turned out I wasn’t getting what I really need. In truth, I was getting some pretty unfortunate pill combinations which were aggravating the issue further. After years of this, enough was enough. I looked here on Unilocal and saw Dr. D was well reviewed, so I reached out to him via email and had an appointment within the week. His website was very clear that he does not work with any insurance. While it was a bummer that he wasn’t in my network, I can’t put a price on how much he’s helped me in the past year. He manages to wear both his serious doctor’s hat (and is genuinely concerned, and has a stake in my well-​being), while also being lighthearted and able to joke or discuss the best Netflix series. It’s refreshing to find a human on the other side of the desk. I believe he will forgive me for saying so, but he is a bit of a geek when it comes to the work he does. He’s interested in the most recent science and stays up to date and is often sharing a relevant article or study. When I told him about a «compassion pill» mentioned on Good Morning America, or that my dog was on an anti-​depressant he made a note to google these things because he’s naturally curious. He’s creative in his approach, and is always revising and attempting to determine the best/​most efficient way to bring his patient relief. Bottom line, he listens and wants to not only help, but to tweak things until you feel 100%. Not to mention he’s quick to email when he’s needed.

I gave Dr. Hsieh 5 stars because I didn’t want my review to lower his rating since this review is to give others some insight on the intake process rather than the quality of his services.
Idk about others, but even though he is listed as one of the providers for my insurance, he doesn’t take insurance. It’s fine, I’m willing to pay cash for a good psychiatrist but then I was told he wasnt taking new patients and he has no waiting list, even though on his website it says nothing about that. In fact, his website is very welcoming towards new patients. And that was one of the reason’s I e-​mailed him.
Was I too pushy trying to get an appt, idk, maybe. But what I do know is that he doesn’t want me as a patient at this time, or anytime soon. Good luck if you do get an initial appt with him.

Dr. Hsieh, affectionately known as Dr. D by his patients, is the best for two reasons. Those two reasons (in no particular order) are: 1. He is caring person who loves his job and wants to help his patients get better, and, 2. He LISTENS. I cannot count the number of times I have been to the doctor (psychiatrist or other) only to leave frustrated and unsatisfied or concerned for my health because the doctor didn’t listen to me or to my concerns. Dr. D listens! I highly recommend him to everyone, and to anyone who had him as their first psychiatrist — you are very lucky! Good doctors are so hard to find. Don’t let him go!

Dr. Dale is the first psychiatrist I’ve seen and I’m really glad it worked out so well. I felt very comfortable during our initial evaluation; he was very thorough and seemed genuinely interested in helping me in the best way possible. He explained everything to me patiently and answered all of my questions. So far, I’m very happy with the path we have chosen.

The only Doctor I ever saw who was willing to treat me like a person and not a number.

Dr. Hsieh (Doctor D) is a fantastic psychiatrist! I’ve been with him for 5 years now — he’s just the best guy. His #1 goal is to help his patients. It’s clear he loves his work and really cares. I started seeing Dr. Dale 6 years ago. he has gotten me through the worst time in my life. He is encouraging, extremely kind and generous. He responded to my at times rambling emails with requests. He is a 5 star Dr. and a wonderful human being on a scale of 10 he is a 10

Fantastic person! He was easy to talk to and REALLY listens. I feel so much better already. It’s an amazing thing when you find a real person who understands and truly wants to help. Dr. Dale Hiesh has been my Doctor a little over a year and in that short time has made life changing progress in such a short time. I had worked for and been to many Internal Physicians that mis-​diagnosed me and put me through so many
different medications I felt like a lab rat waiting to lose my mind or my life in the trust of thier medical experience that was really just educated by pharmaceutical representatives and without educating themselves are no explanation of the diagnose I was experiencing. So I woke up one day and decided finally to get real help from someone who specializes in mental health a Psychiatrist and thank goodness it was Dr. Hiesh. He was highly recommend and my life has made a 360° turn for the better ever since the first day I walked into his office. To sum it up he knows what he is doing and he explains everything that is going on with you and how he will address the issues you are having and if you have any questions yourself. He pays close attention, he’s warm, friendly and really cares about you. I have never felt better and in control of my life than I do now thanks to Dr. Dale Hiesh.

Of all of the Psychiatrists I’ve seen in my 30-​some odd year time of needing treatment, Dr Dale has made me feel the most comfortable, and the most dialed-​in I have felt ever.
First visit I ever had with him, he looked at the medications I was on, and how my symptoms persisted, and suggested two changes in my overall plan introducing very low side-​effect support medication. He seemed to instantly understand the issues that I had with my old medication and how it pertained to me and the rest felt like magic.
He’s a humble, funny, and patient guy – exactly what I needed in addition to some good Meds.

I’ve been seeing Dale for almost a year and he’s been nothing but professional and easy to work with! Visits are never a chore and I look forward to them. With his help, he’s made my life a lot more manageable and continues to help make it better.

After seeing several other psychiatrists in the area with little alleviation of symptoms, I began to see by Dr. Hsieh. I was immediately impressed. He looked at all of my symptoms and issues from square one rather than just prescribing a new medication for the previous diagnosis I had received.
He is by far one of the most caring, compassionate, and effective medical professionals that I have ever seen. As others have stated, it is clear from the beginning that he truly cares about his patients and his craft. He is also relaxed, approachable, and hilarious. Every time I meet with him, I feel like I am chatting with an old friend that also happens to be brilliant and incredibly helpful.
He stays up to date with the latest research and is always more than willing to explain his thought process behind choosing a specific medication, in a clear and easy to understand manner. He’ll tinker every so slightly with dosages until you feel as happy and balanced as possible. I’ve recommended him to many friends because he is without a doubt the best psychiatrist in Austin and you will not regret going to see him.

For the past few years I had been suffering from an escalating anxiety issue and what I thought was depression or bipolar (from google research). My GP said I needed to see physiatrist, I felt it best to talk to someone who specialized in this sort of thing so I could be sure I was on the right treatment path. I asked around and many times Dr. Dales name was brought up. I think word of mouth is definitely the way to go, my friend gave me his email.
This journey started in early 2011. I contacted Dr. Dale and made my appointment within that week, I told him my symptoms, (I’m sharing my true symptoms to help others that read this, because thats how amazing of a Dr. he is) anxiety, I was constantly keeping myself too busy with so many unproductive projects. I was having difficulty sleeping because when I saw him I was also diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and the pain was bothering me. The pain was also messing with my mental state. I felt awful having days that I couldn’t physically do what others did. I have been seeing him for years for multiple things. Everything above and much more.
I went to my first appt, and what I got was so much more. Dr. Dale is kind and attentive and is willing to take the time to explain a multitude of factors that could be contributing to an issue along with multiple routes of potential mitigation, rather than simply handing out prescriptions and sending you on your way. He really takes the time to give you tools to help you with everyday life. He listens, truly listens.
He clarified at our initial interview he we wasn’t the type of doctor that you see once or twice a year to «regulate» medications, but has an entirely more thorough approach that has actually lead to a few modifications to my treatment that have helped immensely. He doesn’t waste your time at all, when I was at the point of spreading my appointments out longer, I felt that I was ready and he also let me know.
I couldn’t say enough that would express that it’s clear that he cares not only about the health of his patients (from my experience), but about what he does in general. He always has something new to share about approaches, and clearly stays up-​to-​date with what’s going on his field so he can remain as relevant as possible, unlike many doctors who find a rhythm that works for them and then simply follows that path with every patient (something I’ve experienced before).
What I was looking for was someone to help me sort out why I was experiencing anxiety and what I got was someone who clearly cares about my well-​being an is committed to finding the correct *current* treatment plan that can lead to a recovery –where the end goal (for me at least) is to eventually be anxiety free as well as drug free. I couldn’t recommend him any more highly.

I was afraid to go to a psychiatrist! I had been to one once before quite some time ago and they were quite dry. Dr. Dale was recommended to me by a friend and I started seeing him 2 years ago.
He is a breath of fresh air. He spotted my issue right away (bi-​polar) and slowly eased me into a drug protocol. He is so caring and just so much fun to work with — I can’t say enough good things.

I sometimes forget Dr. Dale is my doctor. Seriously, I see him 4x a year and each time we pick up right where we left off as if we were life long friends.
There are so many positive things I could say about this man, but you just need to see for yourself. He basically knows everything about me at this point and always has great advice and is completely non biased and judgement free.
I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a true professional and master at his craft.

Dr. Hsieh is by far the most informed and caring doctor I have ever seen. Like other people who wrote reviews, I schedule my first appointment with him based on reviews I read online. From day 1, he demonstrated (and continues to demonstrate) his commitment to his patients but treats each of us as individuals, tailoring his care to my specific needs.
I know a lot of people are hesitant to see a doctor who does not accept insurance, but he has actually saved me money over the years! He doesn’t try to prescribe unnecessary drugs and believes patients should have a say in the direction of their treatment. If you do need medication, he looks at what has been shown to be the most effective and also what fits into your budget. He takes extra time to find the most affordable resources and does not nickle and dime you for every additional phone call or email.
Dr. Hsieh knows how to listen and asks a lot of questions, which seems to be a rarity in any type of medicine these days. He is also eager to learn from his patients, and I appreciate his ability to establish trust and a true 2-​way dialogue. He is definitely an expert in his field, and I am confident in his ability to help patients with varying diagnoses. I commend him for knowing when he can and cannot help me or anyone else. And when I need help from another medical professional, he is communicative and supportive in nurturing those relationships, too.
I could go on and on about Dr. Hsieh. The man saved my life, and I plan to continue my treatment with him indefinitely.

To think that my insurance provider list almost prevented me from being a patient of Dr. Dale Hsieh is enough to make me crazy! Two weeks prior to my first session with Dr. Dale (as he prefers to be called), I took the first available appointment with a Psychiatrist covered by my plan. Having just moved back to Austin from Seattle, I needed to find a doctor quickly because medications I have taken for years are dangerous to stop taking without tapering off.
With my medication running out I found myself at the Austin Psychiatric Alliance seeing APRN C. Watson. With three years of documented and successful treatment in Seattle for depression, anxiety, and ADHD I was blind-​sided to hear the first words out of her mouth (literally, she didn’t ask how I was doing or even make introductions first), «I see you are taking X, Y, Z and you are misdiagnosed and are actually bipolar. I will not be filling your anxiety medicine or your ADHD medicine. I do not *believe* in them.» She didn’t explain why, in her opinion, I was bipolar, and completely ignored all the work done by my Psychiatrist in Seattle. Needless to say I was desperate to find a doctor with social skills, intellect, and a modicum of regard for my psychiatric treatment history and efficacy. I left her office feeling hopeless, scared, and shamed.
That’s all it took to make me realize I should look out of network for a provider. After all, I only have one brain — I can afford to pay out of pocket to protect it. I left a voice-​mail with Dr. Dale, and continued searching for an appointment anywhere. I am so very grateful that Dr. Dale called me back within 2 weeks, and squeezed me in to his schedule on short notice.
My first session with Dr. Dale was a breath of fresh air and completely removed any insecurities I’d gained through my experience with RN Watson. He was friendly, funny, inquisitive, compassionate, and took the time to get to know me as a person. I’ll never forget how funny it was for me to pronounce his last name in Mandarin (having lived abroad in Taiwan and studied Mandarin). He was quick to joke about me pronouncing it better than he could. Not only did he get to know me, but his sociable nature allowed me to get to know him too. He is humble and has a huge heart. He is invested in helping his patients overcome their psychiatric and even psychological problems. I think a wonderful one-​word description for Dr. Dale is «human».
During my first visit with him, I brought up my experience with RN Watson, but I could not think of her name at that time. He guessed who it was on his first try. He wasn’t speaking ill of her, but in guessing correctly he did exhibit to me that:
1. he is plugged into the psychiatry scene in Austin
2. he listens to all of his patients, not just me
3. he approaches his work with a dichotomy of intellect and humility
He even took out a pad of paper and appealed to the Electrical Engineer in me by drawing graphs of brain «activity» that could explain why RN Watson may have sought treatment for bipolar disorder. Indeed since September of 2013 Dr. Dale has been helping me systematically and slowly switch to medications that are often used in treating bipolar disorder. The results are better than expected.
The difference was in his attitude, approach, and interest in working together to find an optimal solution for my unique brain chemistry. He did not vilify me or my current medications because he doesn’t *believe* in them. He didn’t vilify me or my medicine at all. He just wanted to help improve things if they were not working out or not helping with my depression as they once were.
I am so grateful to Dr. Dale for his compassion, wisdom, and humility. He has shown me that there is a different approach to the doctor/​patient relationship. He is an asset to the reputation and field of Psychiatry. I see a therapist as well, and Dr. Dale’s acceptance, tolerance, and support of the cognitive behavioral model used in that therapy has been very encouraging and welcome.
As an engineer I work long hours and some weekends. Dr. Dale is available for appointments in the evening and on Saturdays. I’ve never had an easier time scheduling appointments. I’ve had a few episodes transitioning my medication. Dr. Dale has promptly replied via email or phone to any concern I’ve had. He even took time to call me on his vacation to ensure we modified dosages properly, and to let me know why the episode likely occurred. One week later the new dose had me feeling normal.
If you are in need of a psychiatrist I urge you to strongly consider Dr. Dale. It could be the best gift you ever give yourself. Your mind, body, and health will no doubt thank you. Dr. Dale will care about your mental health until your treatment allows you to. I recommend him without reservation. You deserve the best — and the universe has provided it to us in Dr. Dale Hsieh.

Super-​friendly, approachable, and REAL. Unlike many professionals who can come across as stiff and overly-​corporate, he is like the cool brother we all would love to have.
