Austin Veterinary Center

Decided to try this practice after feeling «meh» with the vet I’d been going to for the last year or two. Brought my senior kitty in for an exam and was really pleased with how she was treated. I particularly liked that Dr. Harris examined her while she was sitting on his lap, not on the table, so it didn’t stress her out like a «regular» vet visit. About the practice, I liked that Dr. Harris is spending his energy on the animals and not on trying to sell Revolution or other products — he offered to provide online prescriptions for the animals that he serves. (I’ve gone to other vets who sell the product at a higher price and give you the runaround if you want to purchase online.) And he also got my cat onto a 3-​year Rabies shot regimen instead of every year, which I’m sure she will appreciate.

When I first moved to Austin, finding a good vet was a priority. Unfortunately, I had to go through a couple of duds before finding Dr. Harris at Austin Veterinary Center. I feel so relieved knowing that my pets are now in his care.
If you are looking for a compassionate and gentle vet to care for your pets, Dr. Harris is the one for you. Everyone loves a good list, so here is my list of why Dr. Harris is an amazing vet:
1. He really listens to you when you discuss your pets health issues. He takes the time to understand what’s going on instead of just assuming he knows better.
2. Dr. Harris is calm and direct when discussing your pet’s health. Some vets seem to imply that you have made some egregious mistake in caring for your pet, or try to scare you into complying with their (often expensive) recommendations. Dr. Harris does the opposite; he will ease your fears by explaining exactly what’s going on and give you options on how to treat it.
3. Dr. Harris is very sensitive to the cost of treatment. He always recommends the least intrusive course of action for your pet, and if an expensive treatment is found to be necessary, he is willing to work with you on paying it off over time. For me, that is the true hallmark of a compassionate vet who cares about animals. He wants to see your pets get better, not make a quick buck by exploiting your love for your pets.
4. The vet techs are very sweet. You can tell by their interaction with your pets that they love animals and will treat them kindly.
I am happy to add my five stars to the numerous other reviews for AVC that all tell the same story: Dr. Harris is the real deal. Don’t hesitate to bring your pets to him; they will be in excellent hands.

I am so happy I found Dr. Harris and his staff at Austin Veterinary Center. I have a sassy, senior adult dog that has had increasing digestive issues over the last few years. After showing early signs of a sour stomach, I called around to a handful of vets in the Austin area to get her in as soon as possible without luck until reaching the friendly receptionist at AVC. She was able to book an appointment for the following day. The entire staff was incredible friendly, caring and genuine. In fact, upon checkout they even told me I could find a heartworm preventative online for cheaper. I have never experienced such compassion and honesty as Austin Veterinary Center. Thank you all for the warm welcoming, Miley and I will be seeing you for many years to come.

If you’re looking for a knowledgable and caring vet, look no further. Dr. Harris is a great vet and is so gentle with all the animals he sees. He and his staff run the clinic so efficiently! Plus, it is so nice to go to a vet that is not overcrowded and unkempt. The rooms are very clean and spacious. The cost is very reasonable, and I firmly believe you are getting some of the best pet health care Austin can provide. It’s also in a very convenient location for a lot of people. Even if you’re not exactly in the area, I think it’s worth a trip to see Dr. Harris and his wonderful team.

Took my guinea pig in and received very thorough care and treatment; Aaron was the small animal tech. He spent a lot of time talking me thru our little fellas possible conditions, and his love and respect for animals was very evident, as was the vets. Finding vets who treat small animals has been pretty difficult outside of the chain store clinics, and this office was clean, easy to get to, professional, and still Austin style caring and friendly.

WOW! I recently adopted a pup and never expected to be received with such warmth and top notch care, even after reading these glowing reviews. From Angel playing with my dog to put her at ease while she did our intake to Dr. Harris perusing her ten pages of vax and heart worm records to make sure everything was in order, I was very impressed.
Since this is my first dog as an adult, I came in with a litany of questions. Each one was thoroughly answered by Dr. Harris. He did a general checkup, gave me lots of good advice, and raised some things to watch for that I hadn’t even thought of. I did not feel hurried at any point. He even encouraged me to call with any follow-​up questions, which I will almost certainly have.
At the end, the first visit fee was waived due to the adoption. I was able to use the Unilocal deal on an already discounted pack of NexGard, and they credited the difference to our account. They even threw in a month of Heartgard free to boot. Of course, I would never expect these freebies, but I still really appreciated the gesture.
So glad we found a great vet!

I am so impressed with Dr. Harris and his staff at the Austin Veterinary Center. I can’t believe how personal and caring he is. I have a very nervous dog and he is so gentle in her exams and teeth cleaning that she isn’t afraid to go there like she had been in the past. I believe that for me that is the kind of care that brings the most peace of mind to me.

To say my experience with Austin Veterinary Center was great is a huge understatement. I found out about AVC through Unilocal when researching veterinarians for a second opinion. My sweet Penny was diagnosed with mammary cancer and it was suggested by my vet to run more tests in addition to the $ 450.00 in testing that had already done (the additional testing was going to be $ 750.00), I can’t imagine what the actual procedure would have cost. Although the veterinary clinic, in my opinion, is a good clinic, it is costly and impersonal. I have never seen the same vet and/​or vet tech more than once.
Due to the glowing reviews on Unilocal,I contacted AVC and made an appointment with Dr. Harris. Penny and I were greeted by his wonderful staff and Dr Harris came out to introduce himself, absolutely no wait. We spoke a bit and he checked Penny (my tiny, very timid, Taco Bell-​looking chihuahua), she was immediately comfortable with him. Dr Harris reviewed my bill and the estimate from my vet and we discussed his opinion and recommendation. He was knowledgeable, warm and caring. I felt very confident in his recommendation and like Penny, very comfortable with him personally.
Dr. Harris performed the very serious surgery and he recommended that she stay the night. When I picked her up the next day, although she looked a little pitiful with the cone around her neck (to prevent her from licking or biting the sutures), she was wagging her tail and walking around, looking great. She was doing much better than expected, apparently, as Dr. Harris put it, she is Superdog. The bill was ½ what I thought it would be (thank you Dr. Harris for the ridiculously wonderful discount!). It seems that all Penny needs now is love and pampering, which I am thrilled to provide. I look forward to our next office visit to remove the sutures.
I am so appreciative of the Unilocal reviews that helped me to find this wonderful doctor and amazing staff, that I felt the least I could do is to post my experience. If someone is looking for a great vet, like I was, I want them to know about the wonderful care Penny received at a better than reasonable price at AVC (I’m paying it forward, so to speak).

My puppy’s second visit to the vet in a week! As first time pet owners, and after deciding that we’ve spent enough of our days at Petco, we decided the next big step for our little 8week old pup was to see the Vet.
There are so many great reviews on Austin vets. I guess it makes sense, being that Austin is so pet friendly. So how do you know which one is for you?
After having a mediocre visit at another animal hospital (we chose it because it was opened later), we decided to go with AVC. Website looks professional, office tour photos look great. I called in and the nice gentleman said I could come in to check out the place.
Our visit with Dr. Harris was spectacular. I was skeptical from the photos because it looked like he was just doing surgeries all day. I was afraid he’d be one of those docs who were good clinically but not socially. I love being wrong with these things. Dr. Harris was the sweetest vet I have met. He took his time, spoke gently and articulately, spent over an hour getting to know our pup, and knowing his parents (me) too. He answered all our questions, gave us advice based on his experience. He’s intelligent and versatile. We really enjoyed our Time with him.
He’s only had this office for 3 years, but has been practicing for years. I like that it feels like a small and professional office. I can’t wait to see my puppy grow up, knowing that he has a safe place for his doctor’s visits and emergencies. Thank you Dr. Harris and your spectacular team for making us feel so safe and comfortable. That’s all I really look for in a provider!

After years of trying to find a vet whose business was more about pet health than profit, we found the literal Holy Grail of professional, attentive and caring Veterinarians in Austin. Austin Veterinary Center will keep our business for years to come.
Dr. Harris is as great with humans as he is with the animals he cares for. We brought our Jack Russell Terrier Breezy, in for a routine check up and were so impressed with the «vibe» of the place. Treat bowls abound, and the staff are so very friendly that we found ourselves very much at ease, with the feeling that we were among friends.
Most impressive is that when it came to the shots, WE were allowed to hold Breezy while the Doctor gave her the injections. I’ve never seen Breezy so happy about a visit to the vet. Ever.
Cost-​wise, it’s a great value

Dr. Harris and Angel are the best. They genuinely care about your fur babies. The vet I usually take my dogs to is aggressive & I always get anxious going to them because they’re always pushing all kinds of test and over vaccinating my dogs. I needed to find a better and ethical practice, and I couldn’t be happier finding Austin Veterinary Center. I usually have to drag my Jakey & Apple into vet offices but they just pranced right on in to AVC. It probably helped that the facility is very clean and AVC couldn’t help but spoil my babies with treats. I’m usually skeptical of 5-​star reviews but these reviews don’t lie!!!

This place is friendly, clean, and they really care about your pet. I have had my dog for 2 years and recently had to take her to the vet for the first time. I called around to 4 different offices to get prices and ask questions about treatment options. Juan answered the phone and out of all 4 he was the most willing to give me price estimates and explain treatments all while being friendly and not getting impatient with me! He also fit me in last minute, like be here in 30 minutes last minute!
When I walked in Juan was very friendly and helped me get checked in right away. He took Daisy and I back to the exam room and even picked her up and snuggled her and pet her, which I thought was super sweet and of course my dog loved. When we were checking out Daisy wandered behind the counter to sniff everything which I thought wasn’t going to be ok, but he said was totally fine, they let them sniff around so they be comfortable.
The vet, Dr. Harris, came in and recommended nexgard for daisy. I had been told about trifexis by other vet offices and when I asked about it he explained to me why it wasn’t a good choice for dogs, that it was too hard on their stomachs and that he doesn’t believe in poisons. It was really comforting to know that they didn’t just jump on board with whatever big brand name medicine came into the office for a sales pitch. He actually was informed about the treatment options and chose one that was best for my animal’s, and all of yours, wellbeing. He was also very friendly and answered every single question I had and made sure I understood what to do to make sure I care for daisy properly.
My second visit went just as well! They even remembered me, which surprised me since I had only been there once before! I called ahead and asked a million questions again, asked for prices for everything that they might have to do treatment wise in case my dog actually had an ear infection, and once again all questions were answered kindly. The office was very busy on my second visit, myself and three others came in all at once, and one was checking out at the same time! Even though Juan was exhausted and hadn’t had a lunch he had it under control and handled it like a champ.
I know Daisy will enjoy coming back here just as much as I will!

Our new puppy had some booty issues recently and these guys are open Saturday mornings! I didn’t even need all the discounts you can get through Unilocal with these guys — the first vet visit for pets adopted out of shelters was free! I just paid for the procedure. The techs Juan and Angel, as well as Dr. Harris, were all super nice and took their time answering all my over-​bearing-​first-​time-​puppy-​owner questions. I was super stoked. Additionally! Angel does pet-​sitting!
I really like the individual waiting rooms they have — pup got used to the room and calmed down before the vet came to see her. Glad we’ve found our vet!

Dr. Harris, along with Juan and James, rocked it! Our first foray into the vet world with a new lab puppy and they made it seamless, and were so helpful in the process.

This place is SO fantastic. Dr. Steve Harris is an actual saint. My 1 year old chocolate Labrador has severe allergies, and we couldn’t determine to what. Our usual vet office is actually Firehouse, but hundreds of dollars in meds later and no relief, we decided to venture for a second opinion as to what the culprit could be.
Dr. Harris saw my Labrador and his assistants as well as himself made Bingham (my pup) so so incredibly comfortable. Go go go here! He’s affordable, realistic, honest, and kind!

After calling 6 veterinary clinics in Austin and being told that they were booked and could not see my sick dog today, I finally found one who could– but they’d be charging a $ 79 emergency fee + the exam and medicine. Then I called Austin Veterinary Clinic and was able to be seen within the hour. Juan at the front was very genuinely kind and told us that they never turn down a sick pet. I knew at that point that my dog, Sagan, and I were in good hands.
Our tech came into the room soon after and within 15 minutes we were speaking with Dr. Harris. You can tell that he has many years of experience and I really appreciated his ability to easily communicate what was happening with Sagan and how to treat it. After he gave us the medicine and told us to take his and Juan’s cards because their cell phone numbers were listed. They both told me that we could call or text at any hour if we needed anything. I have never been offered that by any vet! I feel like I really lucked out by finding such a caring and affordable clinic!

Dr. Harris is the best vet in the whole wide world. He’s always so knowledgeable and caring with Amos and Oscar, our cat and dog, and so reasonably priced.
Take you pet there, don’t think twice!

Doctor Harris has to be one of the best veterinarians I’ve ever been too. He is gentle with pets and genuinely cares about them and their owner’s concerns. We have taken both of our cats to him when they were sick and he handled them both perfectly. One of our cats can be quite the hand full and we’ve had to sedate him whenever we brought him to other vets but that wasn’t the case here. Doctor Harris hardly flinched when our cat wailed and scratched and he really made us feel like everything was going to be OK.
The reviews don’t lie. This is a veterinarian that really cares about the animals and doesn’t try to tack on unnecessary procedures or tests. We won’t be looking for another vet any time soon.

Dr. Harris is GREAT!!! I took in my sick MinPin and he diagnosed the problem without the need for unnecessary lab tests, blood work, or x-​rays. 3 Days later, my black baby was fine.
Alot of Vets try to make money by ordering unnecessary exams. Not Dr. Harris! He is really committed to helping animals and their pet parents. Dr. Harris is very humble and sweet man, who definitely puts the needs of his patients above his own.

We were on the search for a good vet for our newest addition to our household, a laid-​back ginger tomcat we adopted from a local shelter when he was about 5 months old. We tried another local veterinarian first, but thought he was a bit cursory in his initial exam and dismissive of our questions about our kitty’s horrible breath.
We landed upon Dr. Harris and his team via Unilocal,and couldn’t be happier. Dr. Harris is knowledgeable, on time, honest as can be, and relaxed, which put our little guy at ease immediately. He had all sorts of helpful pointers — without ever coming across as pushy — about kitty care, feeding, and considerations if we get a second cat. Even better, he took notice of our claims of our cat’s stinky breath and realized that he has a case of tooth resorption, a common ailment that requires monitoring, good dental hygiene, occasional antibiotics, and eventually surgery to remove the offending teeth.
We trust Dr. Harris and his office staff and are so glad that they take such good care of our sweet boy.
