History
Established in 1985.
The Austin Film Society was established by a group of cinephiles, including filmmaker Richard Linklater (Slacker, Dazed and Confused), to show films that were not readily available in Austin. The programs and services of AFS have grown to include grants and rough cut screenings for filmmakers, youth film classes at underserved schools and an internship program for young adults, and running Austin Studios.
Austin Studios was founded in 2000 through a partnership with the City of Austin. The facility features a 10,000 square foot production office and over 100,000 square feet of production space in former airplane hangars. Improvements totaling $ 6 million to the facility include the largest cyclorama wall in Texas at 87 feet in length and two fully soundproofed production stages. Austin Studios is bringing millions of dollars into the Austin economy in the form of jobs, goods and services.
